That's the message from Police Commissioner Alister Guevarro to all those who submitted Firearm User's License applications which are still pending review following electrical issues at the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Administration Building on Monday that caused a rupture in the fire suppression system.
00:00A rupture in the fire suppression system on the 6th floor of the Police Administration building in Port of Spain due to electrical issues yesterday afternoon caused damage to secure physical records including firearm users license FUL files, triggering anxiety among many persons who had submitted applications.
00:19However, Commissioner of Police in a voice note to the media today allayed any concerns that applicants had saying that 55,000 files were not secured at the building but rather at the firearms unit at another location.
00:34The only firearm files affected were those brought to my office for weekly adjudication.
00:43So there is no need for panic. Your applications are safe.
00:48We are currently reviewing the damaged documents to determine what can be salvaged and we will be reaching out to affected applicants and asking them to contact the firearms permit unit so that we can reconcile their files.
01:04Commissioner Guevara said that all personnel evacuated the building when the alarm went off and he later returned to his office to be confronted with water-soaked documents.
01:16However, he wanted to dismiss conspiracy theories being banded about on social media.
01:21However, when I returned to my office, I discovered that a water line had ruptured and several files were soaked, HR documents, administrative records, internal memos, and some firearm files.
01:37Now let me be absolutely clear because I have seen and heard the comments and conspiracy theories on social media.
01:47The 55,000-plus fire arm files are safe.
01:53The commissioner lamented that for quite some time the police administration building had been facing serious electrical problems.
01:59This building has been plagued by electrical issues for quite some time.
02:06It's not a modern facility.
02:08We are operating with just one elevator.
02:11The central air conditioning system does not function in most areas.
02:16And something as simple as staff using microwaves during lunch breaks causes low-voltage problems.
02:26Commissioner Guevara said these problems have been affecting the smooth running of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service for a while
02:32and have now affected the ability to save the public in an effective manner.
02:37COP Guevara said they were moving towards digitization so problems of this nature can be something of the past.
