00:00We are not going to be easy on the criminal element. I assure you, you persons who are bent on crime,
00:07we are not going to give you a smiling face. We are not going to give you a pat on the back,
00:13even if you stand and appear to be quiet. We are going to come at you and we are going to discommote you.
00:19We are going to make you uneven. We are going to make you uncomfortable in this SOE, in this carnival, and even going further.
00:27DCP for Operations Kurt Simon further weighs in on the triple murder in Gunapo, Arima,
00:33that also left a six-year-old nursing gunshot wounds.
00:37Responding to a claim by a relative of the victims that officers were on the scene and failed to respond,
00:44DCP Simon says the officers were not on the scene at the time, though they would have liked to have been.
00:51Adding that they did respond in quick time, but sadly not quick enough to have saved the lives that were lost.
00:59Still, he is seeking to assure the community that they are not forgotten.
01:04To the residents there, the TTPS, we are in your area. You know that we are in your area.
01:08We are doing our patrols. We are checking on the known offenders.
01:13And even since this incident, you know that we have made some arrests in the areas
01:18related to persons involved in the gangs and the drugs and the menace that goes along with it.
01:23The senior officer is also asking for stricter penalties for offenders.
01:28He says too often they are detained and later released.
01:33We are marking the intervention of the SOE.
01:36We are looking at the advantages that it has given to law enforcement
01:40and perhaps to make some sort of recommendation to the rightful authorities
01:45to make some adjustments with our legal processes so that law enforcement can remain in the ascendancy.
01:53Because right now, perhaps too much rights might be afforded to the criminal element.
02:00DCP Simon believes, anecdotally, that the state of emergency is responsible
02:05for what he describes as a reduction in crime over the past two months.
02:11He further tells TV6 that there are less guns coming into the country
02:16and notes that officers continue operations to remove the firearms being used by criminals locally from off the streets.
02:24We have recovered, as I said, over 100 plus guns.
02:27That means we have not made three months in this year. It's just two months.
02:33So that is more than two guns recovered per day.
02:39We would really like to see the large hauls with the 15 and the 20 firearms.
02:47But we will not fly in God's face when we are getting two and three per day.
