Transcript
00:00Newly installed Police Commissioner Alistair Guevara reveals that on his first day being
00:05appointed into office, he received a report from a well-known firearms dealer.
00:11Against a Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ms. Suzette Martin, I would have immediately appointed
00:17Assistant Commissioner Kurt Simon, seated to my left, as the investigator and would have given
00:25him my full reassurance of all the resources that he would need to be available to him to carry out
00:32this very important remit. As for the nature of the report filed against Martin. The firearm dealer
00:40would have indicated that certain acts would have been carried out against him and that he felt that
00:48it was bordering on criminal conduct. I would not want to pronounce on what exactly is that criminal
00:54conduct because an investigation is underway and we will be certain that the investigation when
01:01completed will uncover whatever criminal conduct exists. While the TGPS can investigate the matter,
01:08the Director of Public Prosecutions will have the final say. The adjudication of this matter also
01:15does not rest in the hands of the Trion Tobago Police Service nor the Commission of Police and
01:20we will be seeking advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions at the conclusion of Mr. Simon's
01:27investigation. ACP Simon says his team met on Monday morning to flesh out the scope of the
01:33investigation. We have not as yet identified any particular timelines in which the investigation
01:40will be completed as the our first meeting as I said was only this morning. We do expect though that
01:48we will move with alacrity in the matter and of course we will keep the Commissioner and you the
01:54public informed as we go along. At this time DCP Martin remains in her post amid the ongoing investigation
02:02but Guevara says he has also passed on the report by the firearms dealer to the Police Service
02:08Commission. Removing or asking Ms. Martin to step aside is not within my power to do. That rests within
02:17the Police Service Commission so I must await their decision on how they are going to proceed with this
02:23going forward. Probed as to whether Martin is the sole subject of the investigation, Guevara would only say
02:30he wouldn't want to put that narrative out there but the public and the media should wait until the
02:36process is completed to ascertain if anyone is culpable. Assistant Commissioner of Police Wayne
02:42Meister was recently nominated by the Police Service Commission to act as a Deputy Commissioner of Police.
02:49Questioned about what to some might seem as a peculiar time for the investigation that has been launched
02:55into Martin. Guevara says, I'm not aware of that position of Mr. Meister as an acting DCP.
03:03Guevara refers to the investigation as an act of transparency and accountability to the public
03:09and he's asking anyone with information that would lead to the closure of the case
03:14to come forward. Alicia Boucher, TV6 News.
