00:00But let's get started. As I mentioned on yesterday's show, even if you live in California and Texas and some of these places where you don't have legalized sports betting, there could potentially be an option for you, at least for now.
00:13You may have heard this investment company called Robinhood was made news over the years for a lot of different reasons.
00:19Well, they have opened up their prediction markets for football.
00:22Now, their derivatives that they've launched includes the first two weeks of college and pro football.
00:29And so this is what they're calling allowing predictions and investments with customers to trade on game outcomes.
00:37Sounds a lot like betting. They're saying it's not betting.
00:41All regular season pro games and matchups, including power for teams and conferences is a company just like Calci, who's decided to do this.
00:50It's being challenged right now by state regulators who say, hey, look, this is gambling.
00:54There's no difference between making predictions and gambling, but hey, look, Calci has flown and they have worked in different states.
01:02We'll see if this continues as college football season week zero begins this week.
01:07Looks like Major League Baseball has finally found some new homes, albeit an old home that becomes a new home again.
01:14MLB TV could potentially move over to ESPN's new app, which is launching in a couple of weeks.
01:20This would start, of course, next season. So that would mean that Friday Night Baseball on Apple is out and the NBC company and Peacock would be in and they would regain rights of Major League Baseball like they had in the 80s for Friday Baseball, Sunday Baseball.
01:37And also they would get the wild card round. And also Netflix is expected to announce, according to this report, that the home run derby would be there starting as soon as next season.
01:50Meanwhile, the college football committee has announced changes to their SOS metric.
01:55The new metric, which is called record strength, will help the committee determine how teams performed during the regular season to determine their seating.
02:03And this would be going into the college football playoff and qualifying it as well.
02:08It's a little complex, honestly, but so are all these AI computers these days trying to figure out who beat who and who should get in the college football playoff.
02:16I'm not here to decide. I'm just here to whine about it.
02:19Now, whining is what's going on in Indianapolis right now.
02:22Seems like Anthony Richardson is not taking his benching too lightly.
02:25His agent, Derek Jackson, says that his trust with the organization is officially questionable.
02:30With the Colts, maybe they gave him some other signal that Richardson would be starting.
02:34He's clearly the backup going into the year.
02:36So that leaves the New Orleans Saints to make a decision.
02:39Who in the world is going to start for them to open up the season?
02:42Is it going to be Spencer Rattler? Is it going to be Tyler Shuck?
02:45Seems like this competition is going to continue at the very least into their preseason game this week.
02:51Here's Kellen Moore on making that call.
02:53Yeah, they did some good stuff.
02:55I think, you know, Tyler just starting it off.
02:57I think, you know, we had a really, really rough first drive, you know, just for the offense in general, not just talking about him.
03:03We just didn't start off the way we wanted to, kind of slow start.
03:06I thought he made a lot of really good decisions.
03:09You know, he found completions.
03:09We had the missed op, you know, with the CO late in that drive, which would have been an awesome opportunity.
03:15Again, he was moving the football.
03:16We just got to get more points and more production out of that first couple drives.
03:20I think that's more important for just the whole offense, not just Tyler.
03:22And so, you know, I thought his process, there was some good process and good, you know, sequencing there from his standpoint, I thought.
03:29Spence came in and obviously, you know, gave us a couple big plays.
03:33You know, the DPI, I think, was a big play just to get ourself going, move the field.
03:37Him and Tipton giving ourself an opportunity there to move down in the red zone.
03:42He made some plays.
03:42Obviously, the interception was unfortunate.
03:44That's on me just as much as anyone, just calling that particular play down there.
03:49And, you know, and the guy made a phenomenal, phenomenal play.
03:52And so his response was great, just the way he responded.
03:55I thought that two-minute drive for that whole offensive group was really, really good.
03:58Just the whole operation, guys being on the same page, understand their responsibilities, the urgency in which we played with.
04:04I thought there was a lot of good at the end.
04:05So, you know, we'll just continue to evaluate.
04:07Despite his struggles in the preseason, the vote of confidence at quarterback from the New York Jets has come from head coach Aaron Glenn.
04:17Justin Fields has not been fantastic, but Glenn said in his press conference yesterday he is confident that the Jets' passing attack is fine.
04:24Just speaking of that physicality aspect you're talking about, it's clear you guys want to run the ball.
04:28Yeah.
04:28That's going to be, you know, very much part of your DNA.
04:31Obviously, it's very much a passing lead.
04:33Is there any concern about your ability to go down fields and whatnot?
04:37Who says it's a passing lead?
04:39Isn't it a passing lead?
04:40Isn't that kind of...
04:41The team that won the Super Bowl, what were they in passing?
04:4529th.
04:46Yeah.
04:46What were they in running?
04:48First.
04:48Defense, too, obviously.
04:50Well, we talked about offense.
04:52Do you have any...
04:53I mean, it's hard for us to see in preseason games and practice, you know, with the body of work as kind of...
04:58Nobody knows what you guys are doing, like, today's situation and stuff.
05:01But, you know, where do you fall in terms of your confidence in getting the ball downfield and the pass?
05:07Very confident because that's what practice is for.
05:10I mean, you have so many people that want to talk about a small amount of play that these guys get to go out there and play.
05:18And then everything is falling down because we throw six passes.
05:24You know, and then, I mean, he's Johnny Unitas when we throw four passes.
05:28Sounds like a lot of running coming from the Jets this season.
05:32That's my interpretation of that.
05:33Also, Aaron Rodgers, the former Jet, will not play in the Steelers preseason finale Thursday.
05:38So, that means no preseason action at all for Aaron Rodgers.
05:43All right.
05:43The Chicago Cubs, they needed exactly what they got yesterday.
05:46The team and staying involved in the wildcard race.
05:49That is the key.
05:50Craig Council, obviously happy with the outcome yesterday.
05:53Well, we need the roster to win.
05:57We need the whole roster to win.
05:59And, you know, a bunch of guys today, you know, it felt like a lot of guys did something today.
06:05And that's why you walk away with two wins.
06:07The throw Willie made was incredible.
06:10You know, sometimes you marvel at big leaguers, man.
06:13They're, whatever, 260 feet away and they put a ball just right on the money with a throw.
06:19And so, that was, when he let it go, it was like, he's out.
06:23I mean, it was one of those throws where he let it go.
06:25It was going to make it in the air and he was going to be out.
06:30Padres get a very big win over the Giants yesterday.
06:32Nick Pavetta, six scoreless innings.
06:34San Diego beat San Francisco four to one.
06:36Also, Mets seemingly on the right track.
06:38David Peterson had a nice game.
06:40Gave up one run in eight innings.
06:41And the Mets dominate the Nationals eight to one.
06:43Here's Carlos Mendoza on the pitching performance and the bat outcome with the bats.
06:48Earlier today, you said that you wanted Peterson to attack hitters.
06:51How would you say that went?
06:52He did a hell of a job.
06:54You know, that's where he starts.
06:55When he's thrown a strike, using all of his pitches, basically competing in the strike zone.
07:00And we saw it today.
07:01The way, the change was really good.
07:04The curveball slider, the sinker, got ground balls.
07:06And for him to go eight, he was really good.
07:10Solid and complete control.
07:12And it was just good to see, especially after the last outing, for him to bounce back that way.
07:16Was there any thought of letting him go back out there?
07:18No, not really.
07:20Especially with him going on regular rest next time out.
07:22I wasn't, you know, like 100, 105.
07:24But once he got through that eighth inning at 97, I think it was, I thought it was a good thing.
07:29On that note, I mean, 16 games in 16 days.
07:32How important was it for him to start that stretch the way that he just did?
07:35Yeah, super important.
07:36You know, first game in this stretch, like you mentioned, where we're playing 16.
07:41We're going to need our starters.
07:42And, you know, they're capable of, and he's a good start by Petey.
07:47But I will say just, you know, a continuation of this last time through, you know, when we're getting guys going into the sixth inning or giving us a quality five.
07:55And, you know, we're going to need those guys, especially in this stretch.
07:58Big outcome for the Yankees offensively yesterday.
08:01They set a team record with eight home runs and beat the Rays 13-3.
08:06Red Sox tie it up in the ninth, coming down to almost beat the Orioles.
08:09But they come up short 4-3.
08:11And Max Scherzer, another good start for him.
08:13Toronto beats Pittsburgh 7-3.
08:15Well, Sam McQuillen and I could probably do an hour on this subject, which is, you know, honestly not getting enough attention, I don't think.
08:23Which is the idea that I don't care what these companies say.
08:27No disrespect at all to Calci and no disrespect to Robinhood.
08:30These companies, in some way, shape, or form, are allowing you to wager, although they're saying predict and saying invest, Sam.
08:38I mean, I don't know how else to look at this.
08:41Like, we do not have legalized sports betting, but somebody can drop Robinhood on an app and go to Calci on an app in California and Texas and do things very similar to folks who want to bet on sports in legal states.
08:56So, if this passes and this continues where you could predict games and invest in sports, where does this leave sports betting with the illegal states in the United States?
09:11Yeah, it's a great question, Craig, and unfortunately one that I don't have the answer for.
09:17And it seems like nobody else really does have the answer for.
09:20You have the scenario where Robinhood and Calci just this week announced that they're going to be offering markets on the National Football League and college football, which builds on what they've been doing over the past year.
09:33If you go back, you'll remember that they really only started offering what they're calling the sports prediction markets, where since you can wager on the outcome of a game, buying a proposition into whether this team will win or that team will win.
09:46They started doing it around last year's Super Bowl, just with the Eagles and the Chiefs.
09:51And when they did that, they got a lot of pushback.
09:53People saying that this looks like sports betting.
09:56We have sports betting regulated in 38 states.
09:58In order to do this, you have to get a license.
10:01You have to go through the states.
10:02You have to pay your taxes.
10:03You have to do basically what FanDuel, DraftKings, and everybody else has had to do.
10:07And one of the reasons that we waited years to have legal sports betting is because it took all of that regulatory stuff.
10:13It took the process such a long time.
10:16Now, fast forward to, you know, this year, they've already done $9 million in trading just on NFL preseason markets.
10:23So this is no longer just kind of a novelty business for them.
10:27If you remember, Kalshi, Polymarket, and all these other companies started offering these prediction markets around, you know, betting on the election, being able to wager who's going to win an Oscar, the weather, economy, kind of novelty markets around predictions.
10:41But once they've crossed over into sports, it's really kind of changed their business.
10:45This is a company that's now valued at over $2 billion.
10:49And the CEO, whenever he's talked about, you know, sports as being kind of the driver of where they're going, he's really, you know, hit home the fact that they're going to keep expanding it.
10:58People obviously seem to be invested in it.
11:00And to your point, Craig, it allows them to operate in states like Texas and California, where legal sports books so far have not been able to.
11:07So this hasn't been without pushback.
11:10You've had, you know, court cases in Nevada, court cases in New Jersey.
11:13But those have kind of ended up in a legal process point where the court has said that, hey, this is something that's supposed to be decided by federal regulators.
11:22The CFTC is the one who oversees this.
11:25Now, the CFTC has largely been quiet on this front.
11:28They really have not weighed in.
11:29And it's allowed these companies like Kalshi, like Robinhood, to go ahead and self-certify and just offer these new markets kind of whenever they feel like it.
11:37And it kind of seems like until the CFTC pushes back, which maybe will never happen, this is going to keep going on until eventually some court case winds up with a result that rules in one favor or another that kind of gives us more clarity.
11:50But, again, because sports betting is a 50-state issue, it's kind of decided state by state.
11:56And because these companies are arguing that, no, we're not subject to those laws.
11:59We're subject to federal laws, which have not been enforced.
12:02It really just creates this massive legal gray area.
12:05So sports books right now, they're watching as well.
12:07They want to see if they're going to be able to offer this.
12:10If, you know, you can't get sports betting legalized in California, maybe they can do the same thing with prediction markets.
12:15But there's a lot at stake here, you know, with pissing off regulators in other states, with pissing off the tribes in the state as well.
12:22But kind of when you boil it all down, it's just it looks like Kalshi and everybody else is going to keep doing these things, which are obviously making them a lot of money.
12:30Otherwise, it wouldn't be expanding.
12:31It's definitely a different kind of, you know, it's not it's not traded the same way as sports betting.
12:36It's a little different.
12:36But right now, it seems like the audience is really appreciating it.
12:40Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
12:41And I do wonder in my home state here of Florida, you know, what's to stop FanDuel and DraftKings from offering prediction markets?
12:49And and how would the Seminole tribe respond to that?
12:53I just cannot imagine that this is going to just go over like this with no pushback.
12:59But I guess we will see.
13:00All right.
13:01So FanDuel, we found out, did not get an untethered license in the state of Missouri.
13:06But the understanding was at the time they would find a way in somehow, Sam.
13:10And one of the ways that they did was partnering with a major league soccer team in Missouri.
13:14Tell us more.
13:16Yeah.
13:16FanDuel missed out on one of those two untethered licenses, which is designated for companies that don't have to partner with a major sports team or a major casino in the state.
13:26It was kind of a surprise they got left out and actually allowed Circus Sports to get in and not have to do one of these deals.
13:32But like you mentioned, Craig, it's really no surprise that FanDuel found a way pretty immediately into the state.
13:36They partnered with St. Louis City SC, which is one of the several sports teams in the state, which has allowed market access under the Missouri sports betting legal agreement.
13:48Basically, a sports book can partner with them and just pay them a fee to allow it to exist in the state.
13:53You know, FanDuel contributed, along with DraftKings, over $40 million to help get sports betting legalized in Missouri in the first place.
14:01So that was kind of the first sign that they weren't going to just take that loss and pack up shop.
14:05What is kind of interesting here is that FanDuel previously had partnered with Boyd Gaming in a lot of states.
14:11It's a big casino company which owns, you know, casinos across the country.
14:15And oftentimes states make it where you have to partner with a casino.
14:19They weren't able to do that in this case in Missouri because they actually just reworked the agreement, which does not give the market access to Missouri.
14:26So they couldn't kind of just go back door there and use something they already had.
14:30But this is going to be the only state we have legalizing sports betting or going live with sports betting in December this year.
14:37So it's going to be pretty big for these companies like FanDuel, DraftKings to get in.
14:41A lot of them already have customers in the state that have bet in other states while sports betting has been legal for years.
14:47A lot of them have a big database of daily fantasy sports players as well.
14:51So there are still some licenses up for grabs.
14:54This by no means is the last license we should probably hear about more.
14:58Operators in the coming months, you've already had BetMGM, Bet365, DraftKings, and Circa all obtain their licenses.
15:05But there's still a window open for operators like ESPN Bet, operators like Caesars to do similar things where they partner with a sports team or casino in the state.
15:15The deadline for those applications is September 12th.
15:18And then after that, we're just going to have to wait a little bit for December 1st for when sports betting eventually goes online.
15:23Yep. And that will be a big day, of course, for us here at SportsGrid as well.
15:27All right. Let's get back to California here as they watch Calci and Robin Hood just simply come in and do things that they don't want.
15:34At least they have a bigger stronghold here on sweepstakes in California.
15:39It feels like that state, Sam, doesn't want daily fantasy.
15:42They don't want sweepstakes. They don't want sports betting. They don't want anything.
15:44Yeah. California and especially its tribes have been steadfast fighting these kind of alternate forms of gaming, which, again, look, talk, act like regular sports betting, but want to be classified as something else so they don't have to follow the state's law, which has kept sports betting illegal for a long, long time.
16:04And the tribes have pretty much held the keys to allowing sports betting to be legalized.
16:08So it's no surprise that we've seen them fight against these alternate forms.
16:12Did have an interesting development this week.
16:14One tribe, the Klet Sel Dhe Wintun Nation, actually spoke out against a bill that would ban sweepstakes casino gaming.
16:23These, of course, are the games that look like sports books, function like casinos, but because there's a free-to-play function, they get federally regulated as opposed to being subject to state laws.
16:35But this one tribe actually just partnered with a company called VGW, which offers these social sweepstakes casinos and sports books in California right now.
16:46So you had this one tribe come out and say that we don't want this bill to be passed.
16:50It's going to hurt smaller tribes like us, which try to get a lot of money from this business to fund health care and other initiatives.
16:57But it also comes when you've had 50 other tribes speak out against sweepstakes and really push for this bill to get done.
17:03So it throws a bit of a wrench in the process.
17:06The bill is now under what's known as the suspense file, which means it's going to be reviewed again before it goes to the floor.
17:13But if I had to predict, Craig, I would say that one tribe is not going to be enough to stop the other 50 that have really been railing against the sweepstakes business in California.
17:22Definitely so. Sam, great stuff as always.
17:24We'll read more over at LegalSportsReport.com.
17:26Thanks again for coming on Newswire.
17:28Thank you, Craig.
