00:00We've got to run down the top stories, tell you what is going on across the sports betting world,
00:06and that is not always on the field.
00:08It's not always the news that impacts how you want to place your wagers.
00:12Sometimes it's the business of betting, and that is where we begin.
00:17Out in Nevada, Nevada, if you will, Congresswoman Dana Titus, her fair bet amendment has been rejected.
00:25She will actually continue to work to restore the 100% gambling loss deduction that she has been fighting for.
00:31But if you haven't been paying attention to this, in short, what it means is the amendment that is coming
00:36would have reversed the, or the amendment that she has been fighting for,
00:40would have reversed the change made by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that is on the way
00:44that would allow gamblers to deduct just 90% of their gambling losses any given year,
00:49as opposed to the status quo full amount that has been in place for 70 years.
00:55The fair bet act is still pending in the House Ways and Means Committee until the start of the new year,
01:02but rest assured, it's on the way in a matter of months.
01:05Now we go to the field where, of course, the NFL season kicked off last Thursday.
01:10Fun game.
01:10Chiefs, as we know, or the Eagles, pardon me, against the Chiefs, the Super Bowl rematch.
01:16A good time there.
01:19The football fans are going to remember, excuse me, excuse me.
01:22I'm looking ahead to myself here that what we have in front of us in the matter of days.
01:26We had the Eagles against the Cowboys.
01:28Who can forget the spit heard around the world?
01:31And that is really where we are beginning with Jalen Carter,
01:33who was kicked out of that game effectively before it even started.
01:37I mean, seconds in, there wasn't even a snap that was placed.
01:40And what we saw from Carter spitting in the direction of Dak Prescott, the quarterback for Dallas,
01:47got himself kicked out.
01:48There were many that felt immediately there's going to be a suspension.
01:52Well, no suspension, according to news from Adam Schefter of ESPN earlier today.
01:56Basically, getting kicked out of that game is serving as the one-game suspension.
02:01What he is going to get, however, is the fine of a game check,
02:04which amounts in nearly $60,000.
02:07A big, big number.
02:09But Carter is going to be available for the, as mentioned, Super Bowl rematch
02:14that is on the way with the Kansas City Chiefs coming up in just a matter of days.
02:18Veteran pass rusher Jadavion Clowney, who, of course, is not currently in the league.
02:23He is a free agent.
02:24Began first stretch of his career, five years with the Houston Texans.
02:28Three-time Pro Bowler has really bounced around the league since,
02:31become something of a journeyman.
02:33He has spent time with the Panthers most recently, a whole bunch of places.
02:39Ravens, Browns, Titans, Seahawks.
02:42Well, he is going to meet with the Cowboys today because in lieu or in the wake of the
02:47Micah Parsons deal to the Green Bay Packers, the Cowboys,
02:51they could use a little bit of help when it comes to the pass rush.
02:54And so he is going to meet with them, potentially have himself a new job coming up here very soon.
03:00Now, speaking of Green Bay, again, the new home for Micah Parsons, we get some receiver news,
03:05and that is Christian Watson, who is recovering from that torn ACL,
03:09has not yet played, is expected to at some point here this season.
03:13The wallet getting just a little bit fatter, Green Bay showing its confidence in him.
03:18A one-year extension north of $13 million good through the 2026 season.
03:23So, again, we'll get Christian Watson back, presumably at some point this season,
03:28but he will be full go if at least he can stay healthy for all of next year in a Green Bay uniform as well.
03:35Serial fumbler, as our guy Frank here, producer, likes to refer to him,
03:39Xavier Gibson is now looking for work.
03:42His miscue with the Jets last weekend contributing to Pittsburgh's dramatic comeback win
03:47against New York in the final seconds of that game led to strong words from Aaron Gleddon,
03:54the new head coach there in the Meadowlands.
03:56It was, you will not be on the field with this team if you're going to cause us to lose games.
04:01Apparently, you're not going to be on the roster either because Gibson, again, has been released.
04:07He's looking for new employment.
04:08At the college ranks, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day.
04:13He's not a fan of the proposed transfer portal changes that are in place at the moment,
04:19which would move the winter transfer portal from December to January,
04:23a 10-day period that would begin on January 2nd.
04:26Coach, isn't that right?
04:28No.
04:30I don't think it's a good idea at all.
04:32In the conversations that we had with the Big Ten coaches,
04:35I think the majority of them agree.
04:40I just don't quite understand how, you know,
04:44for teams that are playing in the playoffs are expected to, you know,
04:49make the decisions and sign their upcoming players
04:52while they're still getting ready to play for games.
04:55It doesn't make any sense to me.
04:57I know the calendar is funky, but, you know,
05:00I know that the Big Ten and Tony Petiti has been working hard
05:03because he doesn't believe it either.
05:04And neither do the coaches in the Big Ten.
05:06We had a lot of long discussions about that
05:08and tried to work through the different windows.
05:11But I don't agree with it being in January.
05:14Meanwhile, Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King,
05:17who really wasn't needed in the previous game,
05:20a shellacking of Gardner-Webb, 59-12.
05:23The lower body injury is improving, was a full go at practice yesterday.
05:27The expectation is that he is going to be ready,
05:30at least hopes to be ready for this weekend's matchup with Clemson.
05:33Clearly, a much more important game.
05:36More QB news.
05:37Alex Orgy from UNLV.
05:39This news not as good for the quarterback.
05:42He is out for the season.
05:44Had hurt his hamstring against UCLA.
05:46The hamstring came off the bone, reportedly.
05:49So he is going to miss the remainder of this season.
05:52We go to the Diamond, where, again,
05:53playoff races are tightening up.
05:56Very fun time of the year,
05:57with only a few couple weeks left in the regular season before playoff get here.
06:02The underdog Tigers, they were plus money yesterday,
06:05plus 130 with Casey Mize on the mound.
06:08Whooped the Yankees, 12-2 in the Bronx.
06:10Nine runs, seventh inning.
06:12Aaron Judge, his 359th career home run,
06:15passing Yogi Berra as the team's fifth place.
06:18Now, on that all-time list, next up, Joe DiMaggio at 361.
06:22Just a couple in front of him.
06:24But individual achievements aside,
06:25obviously an ugly loss for the Yankees
06:28and manager Aaron Boone,
06:29who watched things come apart there in that seventh.
06:32Yeah, just a little bit of that.
06:33Obviously, the hit batter, another walk.
06:36So just, you know, a rough inning for us
06:38and getting in the strike zone.
06:40And they were disciplined enough.
06:42But, you know, obviously, that's the story there in that inning.
06:48Aaron, how do you kind of wrap your head around that inning as a whole?
06:52I mean, you guys had been playing well for the most part throughout that game.
06:55Certainly an opportunity to win it.
06:57Yeah, I mean, obviously, Will pitched so well.
06:59You know, six strong innings kind of set us up there.
07:02And, look, they just, we just got away from us.
07:06Five ends up being five with the hit batter, free passes.
07:09You know, we managed contact.
07:13You know, it's not like we got hit a lot all over the yard
07:15and some balls finding holes.
07:18But, you know, just too many free passes.
07:21So with that loss, the Yankees three games
07:23and tied with the Red Sox for second place in the American League East
07:28behind the Toronto Blue Jays,
07:30who rallied to beat the Astros 4-3 in 10 innings.
07:33Exciting win there for Toronto.
07:35The Astros one game up in the West on Seattle Mariners.
07:38So, again, multiple divisions with very tight races at the moment.
07:42Over in the NL East, where that is not the case,
07:45there were still some theatrics.
07:47Kyle Schwarber just continues to mash.
07:49He is the first National Leaguer this year
07:51to reach the 50-home run plateau.
07:53Got there in the Phillies' 9-3 win over the Mets.
07:56In the process, New York's Juan Soto,
07:58achieving his first 30-30 season with 30 home runs
08:02and 30 stolen bases in his career.
08:04The Dodgers, they were heavy favorites to beat the Rockies,
08:07responded accordingly.
08:097-2 win to give Los Angeles a two-game lead
08:12in the National League West on San Diego.
08:15Teoscar Hernandez, a couple of home runs in that game,
08:18and Emmett Sheehan, a nice start for L.A. as well.
08:22Back here on Newswire, and we welcome in our next guest,
08:25who is a frequent contributor to the program
08:27from the Legal Sports Report,
08:28our friend Sam McQuillen, who is on Twitter
08:31at Sam underscore McQuill.
08:33Sam, good to see you.
08:34You too, Adam. Thanks for having me.
08:37Absolutely. We always love to have you here
08:38to get into the business of all of this stuff.
08:41It's not all just, you know, the overs, the unders,
08:44the spreads, how do we feel about this game?
08:46No, it's important to know kind of where the money's going,
08:48where's it coming from, what's legal, what's not,
08:50what people are fighting for, all of that.
08:52Talked about Dana Titus off the top of the show.
08:54Let's talk to you about Calci,
08:56because the predictive market,
08:57I don't think this should surprise anybody,
08:59but with the NFL back, it has really taken off.
09:03Yeah, Calci saw $300 million in volume
09:06over the first weekend of college football and NFL,
09:10which again is the first time it's been available
09:12at the start of a football season.
09:14This was the sports, this was this prediction market,
09:16which had made its business on the election,
09:20allowing people to bet on the weather,
09:22allowing people to bet on kind of unconventional things.
09:24And then last year started taking basically bets on sports
09:30under this mechanism that has allowed them to be live
09:33and legal technically in 50 states.
09:35So this is the first time ever that you've had
09:38at the start of a football season.
09:39States like California and Texas,
09:41people having access to this legal betting app,
09:44you know, they have a partnership with Robinhood,
09:46so it's widely available.
09:47And you saw just a ton of volume.
09:50It was the third largest day in Calci's history,
09:52and it was the biggest since the 2024 presidential election.
09:55So that should tell you how much just one weekend of football
09:59can garner interest,
10:00even when you have a lot of legal options out there
10:03like DraftKings and FanDuel.
10:04You know, this is an option that's available in states
10:06where those are not.
10:08So ahead of football season,
10:09they re-changed their entire interface
10:11to, you know, have American odds,
10:14to have kind of the six box thing
10:16where you have the over-unders for a game,
10:18the money line and the spread on each one.
10:20So basically, they're trying to make it look
10:21and feel like a sports book.
10:23However, they are not telling regulators
10:26that it is a sports book.
10:27You have four states suing them,
10:29saying, hey, this is illegal sports betting.
10:31Sports betting was left up to the states.
10:33We need to get a license.
10:35You need to be vetted through us.
10:36Calci, meanwhile, is arguing that,
10:38no, we are federally regulated under CFTC
10:42as a derivatives exchange.
10:44So you have this kind of whole legal background process
10:48has been very murky
10:49and we're waiting on a lot of different things
10:51to happen, things to get declared.
10:53But in the meantime, you know,
10:54they're doing a tremendous business
10:56on football in general,
10:57and it's led to other companies
10:59that we've talked about before,
11:00FanDuel and DraftKings, Underdog,
11:02exploring similar partnerships.
11:05They might see it, you know,
11:06as a way to be live in these other states
11:08where sports betting hasn't existed.
11:09And, you know, basically until somebody tells you
11:11you can't do it,
11:12they're going to keep doing it.
11:12You hit on some of it,
11:15but the numbers are pretty impressive here.
11:16You know, with football back, obviously,
11:18Calci topped $300 million over the weekend,
11:21but the NFL, specifically Sunday alone,
11:24was upwards of about $200 million.
11:26Some individual games for anybody wondering.
11:28Michigan, Oklahoma, over $10 million.
11:31Over in the NFL, you had 161 combined trading
11:35specifically on those 13 games.
11:38So, of course, the $200 million was across the board,
11:41features tennis as well,
11:42which has really taken off in that market.
11:44But Baltimore and Buffalo,
11:46that exhilarating Sunday night game
11:49that I think probably won people a lot of money,
11:51cost people a lot of money,
11:52depending on what side you were on,
11:53that meltdown there for the Ravens late.
11:55But that was about $36 million in trading.
11:58So, I imagine just Calci in general is rooting for these rivalry games,
12:05these primetime games, these giant matchups,
12:07because, you know, people are not going to spread themselves probably too thin
12:11with lower interest games,
12:14like, you know, the Giants against the Saints or something like that.
12:18It's they want these, you know, primetime games,
12:20these huge monumental Eagles, Chiefs, Super Bowl rematch type of contest to invest in,
12:25and that's where they're going to make their coin.
12:29Yeah, definitely.
12:30I think, you know, you hit on the numbers right there.
12:32If you look at even college football,
12:33Michigan, Oklahoma saw like $10 million in trading volume.
12:37So, it's basically being able to get a product out there,
12:40allowing people to come and be involved in these games,
12:45especially in states, again, like Texas, like California, Alabama,
12:48you know, states where for college football or NFL,
12:51there's a huge appetite to bet on this kind of stuff.
12:54And this is the first time ever Calci's allowing people in those states
12:57kind of a way to do it legally.
12:59So far, you know, they probably feel comfortable using a Robin Hood
13:02versus, you know, like an offshore sports book.
13:04And they're certainly marketing it as legal sports betting in every state.
13:08So, it's really no surprise that people are taking advantage of those big matchups.
13:12And, yeah, definitely whenever the games are close,
13:13you know, it's more volume for the sports book.
13:16And they kind of benefit regardless.
13:18You know, they're not a sports book that really,
13:20they don't function like a sports book where they're taking money on the VIG.
13:23They're taking a percentage of money as a fee that everyone's betting.
13:26So, the more volume that gets bet, the better for Calci.
13:29It's not like a sports book where they're dependent on the game outcomes,
13:32which obviously we saw last year, they very much were.
13:35You mentioned California and the Senate there out West voted 36-0
13:40to send a bill that would ban online sweepstakes casinos in the state back to the assembly.
13:46So, where do we go from here?
13:49Yeah, it's a good question.
13:51The California's moved swift and quickly to ban the sweepstakes casinos and sports book games,
13:57which basically a lot of people are identifying as just a, you know,
14:02pseudo sports betting option that has been, you know,
14:05that functions a certain way so it can skirt state gambling laws.
14:08Obviously, California does not have legal sports betting.
14:11It does have prediction markets right now, but the state is even fighting against that.
14:14There's a lawsuit and pretty much any form of gambling or any form of wagering that says
14:21it's not gambling so it doesn't have to follow the law has been really met with swift force
14:24in California.
14:26There's been a lot of tribes kind of behind pushing this bill forward.
14:30The fact that it was moved forward unanimously, I think, says a lot.
14:33Tribes have a huge, huge, tremendous influence in the state with their lobbying power.
14:38They, you know, of course, were the group that basically got the sports betting ballot
14:41proposition defeated just a couple of years ago and have been the reason that sports betting
14:46kind of remains illegal in California.
14:48So, they've really been swift in the response to what they see as alternate forms of gaming.
14:53Where sweepstakes go from here, I would imagine there's not much they can do,
14:57just kind of cut their losses once they get kicked out of the state.
15:00There could be a lawsuit which challenges it down the line.
15:02I don't think that they would win that.
15:04But I think this will probably spread to other states that we've seen now move
15:07against, you know, sweepstakes.
15:09We've seen the move against fantasy sports that acts like sports betting.
15:12And we've certainly seen the move against sports prediction markets as well.
15:16So, this is just kind of where we're headed with the industry right now.
15:19Sam, I remember all the excitement where I am in Massachusetts about pending legalization
15:24for gambling and sports books and when it was right around the corner.
15:28And just the, again, all the enthusiasm around it helps that, you know, a company like DraftKings
15:33obviously is headquartered in the Boston area.
15:35But even still, you know, state to state when these things happen, it's just there's a zest
15:42around it.
15:43And that's coming to Missouri in just a couple of days.
15:46And that means deadline for Friday for various sports books, you know, name them, you know,
15:52to get their applications in to be legal in those states.
15:55We've already seen a half dozen legalized there or at least, you know, prepared to be legalized
16:00there with their applications in.
16:02But what else is on the way here in the next 48 hours or so?
16:06Yeah, you're going to have every sports book that hasn't already applied really try to get
16:11that crunch in there if they haven't yet.
16:12To be in the Missouri market when it launches in December, in Missouri is obviously, you
16:17know, a pretty significant state in size.
16:19It's not the biggest, but it is very important, especially this season, because it's the only
16:23state that's going to launch legal sports betting this entire season.
16:27This was actually the first week one where we didn't have a new state on board.
16:30So sports books weren't able to add more signup bonuses or more signup customers installing
16:36the app for the first time.
16:38Of course, you know, you get more signups when people turn 21 every year, but they're real
16:41the heart of how they add business is when new states turn on.
16:45Of course, as you know, have about 38 states have legalized sports betting.
16:48There's not a ton left.
16:49So Missouri is kind of that last one out there for them really to try to compete, get ahead
16:54in the market.
16:55It's supposed to launch in December.
16:56It looks like everything is tracking smoothly right now.
16:59The state has already given out licenses or approved the pre-process of licenses for sports
17:04books like DraftKings, sports books like Circa.
17:07You've had sports books like FanDuel partnering with teams in the state, which will likely
17:11give them a license as well.
17:13Fanatics, Underdog, Caesars have all applied as well.
17:16You know, there's not many other sports books out there to join in, but if there are, they're
17:20definitely going to do it.
17:21I have to get it in quick before the end of the week so they can be live by the start
17:25of Missouri's launch in December.
17:27As you alluded to, FanDuel's partnered up with St. Louis City FC, of course, the professional
17:33soccer team.
17:34Caesars, ESPN, Fanatics, Underdog have submitted their applications.
17:38And yeah, we'll see who else does in the coming hours.
17:42Sam McQuill and Legal Sports Report on Twitter, Sam underscore McQuill.
17:45Sam, always enjoy it.
17:46We'll talk again soon.
17:48Yeah, thanks, Adam.
