00:00but as we always do we start off the show with some sports betting news and notes and this one
00:03not a big surprise as fanatics who operates a sports book have decided to also dive into the
00:10same market that fanduel and draft kings and seemingly everybody else is as well prediction
00:15markets are coming to fanatic ceo michael rubin made the announcement yesterday and said it will
00:20launch in the next couple of weeks courtesy of crypto.com so that will be the partnership that
00:25they have with crypto.com the of course website and app that you can purchase cryptocurrency with
00:32rubin said i think that winners will be in the sports books if you look at what flutter and
00:36fanduel and draft kings and fanatics are we have strategic advantages from the enormous customer
00:41base that we have and all of the experience essentially saying that crypto.com can now
00:45dip into the fanatics database in order to capture different sports bettors who of course can't bet in
00:51certain states so naturally they can use the prediction markets to circumvent that and get
00:55around that as well but meanwhile the state of maryland is saying not so fast if you're going to
01:00operate prediction markets you're going to have to go the maryland lottery and gaming control commission
01:04they're joining forces warning licenses in the state where sports betting is legal that offering
01:10prediction markets in the u.s could have negative repercussions for their state license which basically
01:16means that some of the operators could lose their sports betting license if they operate in the
01:22prediction market space fanduel draft kings and others not being named but that's what that means
01:26in the state of maryland so if some of these states choose to pull the licensing what will these
01:31operators do will they still operate prediction markets or will they stop and keep their sports
01:36betting license i don't know remains to be seen 2026 will be a big year for that in the national
01:40football league last night the houston texans sack josh allen eight times eight times in the game last
01:47night and they picked them off twice three turnovers for the bills in three straight games houston stays
01:53alive in the nfl playoff chase as they pick up a very big victory 23 to 19 the bills had the ball late
02:00in the game tried to score josh allen threw an interception although they did convert a pretty wild
02:04fourth and 27 on that same drive so the bills take a step back houston takes a step forward domiko
02:11ryan's got the best defense in the nfl and says doesn't have to say much just lets them do their
02:15thing with our defense i don't have to say much to the guys just keep doing what you've been doing
02:21that's the that's the beauty of you know the guys we have the leaders that we have with aziz will
02:27danil uh those they know them they know the moment they understand the moment and they're ready for
02:32those moments and they went out and they proved you know why they're ready for those moments
02:36everybody was was calm everybody played together everybody was exactly where they're supposed to be
02:42and i'm just proud of the guys i mean miles came in did a great job jalen reed first time he saw a lot
02:49of action forwards i thought his first game playing a lot i thought he stepped up and played big fours as
02:55well so i think they're definitely the best defense in the nfl um i mean after personal experience of going
03:01against them the past couple years um those guys come to play every single day they work as hard
03:07as they can every day when they're in the building out on the practice field and i mean i think the
03:11way they work and the mentality that they have just the swarm mentality that shows up on game day
03:17weekend and week out and i mean it makes it fun to be on the same team as those guys
03:22hard to argue with davis mills who now is undefeated as a starter with houston texans who had that one
03:28meanwhile seething buffalo bills head coach sean mcdermott not on the team's effort but the
03:33execution they could get nothing done um things you can't do against a good football team and a good
03:39defense overall um you know let's just start field position wise we beat ourselves from a field
03:46position standpoint some costly penalties the uh the turnovers three turnovers um you just look at it
03:54overall and we weren't playing enough complimentary football and we had to start a chance to win at
04:00the end of the game but uh plenty of things we need to work on so i'll have to watch it on film
04:04um it's like they were doing a few few different stunts um you know they had a good plan
04:11and uh we gotta you gotta play better
04:14did we show you something different than what was on film not necessarily they just got they
04:23they wanted it today you know and um yeah i mean we had a chance to win it there at the end and
04:30gotta find a way meanwhile thanksgiving was supposed to be the return of joe burrow at quarterback for
04:37the cincinnati bengals that could be actually this coming week he was a full participant
04:42in practice for the second day in a row joe flacco was taking second team reps and so after practice
04:48yesterday wide receiver t higgins was asked does he think burrow is ready to go now uh joe's been
04:55looking good i mean he looked good last week when he was practicing you know um you know uh you know
05:00i'm happy for him you know i mean uh just to get his feet back wet and you know it's been good
05:05would you be surprised are you expecting him to to play sunday i wouldn't be surprised you know
05:10i don't know i asked him yesterday and he just looked at me like this and but uh yeah i don't know
05:16so i guess i guess only he knows the way he's practicing does he look like a guy that could play
05:21on sunday sure yeah he's practicing like he was week one so
05:26look that he gave you i guess i don't know i guess it could go
05:31but i assume good well if you look good throwing the past couple days that's man joe's been looking
05:39outstanding man he's i mean he's slinging it deep short routes everything's been been pretty good so
05:46and t higgins wide receiver one with jamar chase suspended this week meanwhile get ready for a showdown
05:53dallas cowboys philadelphia eagles usually when these two teams play it tends to be a lot of fun
05:58even more fun this week looks like jaylen carter back for philly going up against dak prescott
06:04prescott not all that uh ready for the matchup sounds like jaylen carter's gonna be around for
06:10this game uh what kind of impact do you think he has for that defense a huge impact um obviously it
06:19starts right there with him in the middle um he's uh the main reason why they don't feel like
06:23they have to blitz if they can get pressure with just four guys a hell of a player um we're fortunate
06:28in the first game to obviously not go against him um but i know he'll be ready to go and fired up for
06:33this one so excited for it i'm gonna say to jaylen carter if anything when you see him for the first
06:38time since week one depends on what he says first but uh probably something friendly
06:43get on his good side there
06:46given uh what happened with you personally in the first batch of what's the significance of this
06:50report oh no we're not worried about that we we hear where we are right now and at the end of
06:55day everybody playing so that's how we're worried how do you reflect on sort of your uh your growth
06:59since then from week one i'm not even thinking about it meanwhile in the national basketball
07:05association last night victor wimbayama hasn't played for the spurs and it hasn't seemed to matter
07:10they won their third straight game without them 135 to 126 over the atlanta hawks the aaron fox had
07:1826 points and nine assists miss johnson is the head coach of the spurs and said everybody else is
07:24contributing yeah there's a couple points in the game tonight where you know not not uh singling a
07:32couple guys out but a lot of people had it but him uh devon jeremy where they put themselves in the
07:39game defensively and they gave themselves to the game defensively and rebounding without the
07:45basketball and then next thing you know the basketball finds you and it's been you know
07:49tell tell as long as time excuse me and um it's just really rewarding when that happens for people
07:56when they when they go about the business the right way orlando magic meanwhile keep the ball rolling

08:44on the website on social media as well writing about all the different things that are happening
08:49it's been a year as we get ready to close out 2025 all about prediction markets so no surprise that
08:55continues today here on the show and uh sam in in looking for some new clarity uh the other day
09:01we seemingly did not get any the new cftc chairman essentially uh passing the buck a little bit saying
09:08that hey we're gonna let uh you know the courts handle things and you know certainly i i don't know
09:13which way this is going to go but the longer that everybody just keeps pushing these stories to the
09:18side it seems like prediction markets are here to stay
09:21yeah i would agree with you craig that's the top line takeaway the more uncertainty we have around
09:29the fate of prediction markets who will decide them mainly uh the longer they ramp up their
09:35investment their legitimacy through deals with the nhl with x with the new york stock exchange just
09:42they have more time to gain mind share uh in the general public's eyes as well we certainly see ads
09:48everywhere and these companies uh are getting more and more investments by the day but kind of the big
09:53news this week is that michael selig who is the chief counsel of the sec crypto task force he's trump's
10:00nominee to lead the cftc which is largely devoid of leadership right now they only have one of five
10:07acting chair seats filled and one of those chair seats is actually uh on the way out in about a month as
10:13well so his timing comes with the senate confirmation hearing uh later this week in front of the full
10:19senate um where everyone's kind of pressing him for what are you going to do about prediction markets
10:24it's a new space that uh courts have largely said this is actually up for the cftc to decide you've had
10:30in several states like nevada and new jersey um where state gaming regulators sued to stop these prediction
10:37markets calling them illegal gambling the courts have said you know it's actually up for the cftc to decide
10:42whether these are actually financial instruments and legal markets you can offer or if this is just
10:48flouting state law and so senators pressed michael selig about this what would you do on it and he
10:53largely said oh that's actually not up for the cftc to decide that's up for the courts to decide
10:58one senator adam ship even asked him very basic questions if you know i'm betting on the bills texans
11:04monday night football game last night on one of these apps is that sports gaming uh selig declined and
11:10said you know i'd have to look to previous court decisions and i don't think i can make that
11:14decision he then even asked him uh if you and i are just betting on the game is that sports betting
11:18or is that a financial instrument again selig declined to answer and deferred it to the courts
11:23which all points to the growing kind of sentiment around what people believe is going to end up
11:29happening with this stuff which is that the supreme court will likely decide the fate of it now
11:33again as you mentioned it just is going to take more time the supreme court moves very slowly and it
11:38takes a long time for you know cases to get to them and you don't even know if they would even
11:43take the case at that point we could be talking about someone else as president during that time
11:49trump administration has been very friendly to prediction markets they certainly have a lot of
11:52ties to them been very friendly to crypto as well um they lifted a biden administration
11:57administration ban on poly market so by the time this all gets sorted out you might have a completely
12:02different landscape of who the regulator is supposed to be and i agree with your takeaway craig the more
12:07all the uncertainty just kind of continues the more of these prediction markets are going to gain steam
12:11yeah and as evidence of that of our next topic here is apps are being downloaded and it's very clear who
12:19the winner is here based on this year and based on football season the winner sam to me is calci plus
12:2623 percent up 1.47 million downloads and i'm sure that these other sites sam are are recognizing this we
12:36see this new partnership that fanatics announced earlier today and they would like to get probably
12:41more downloads through crypto.com but we're seeing a lot more steam here for the prediction markets and
12:48in places like california and in texas i'm sure if we geographically looked at it why not get involved
12:53in some of these things that appear to be very similar to sports betting
12:56yeah very notable calci now fifth in app downloads when you include them in the entire sports gambling
13:05space uh moving ahead of uh bet365 betmgm and caesars who for a long time have been thought about
13:11kind of the people behind draft kings and fan duel now it's calci which is even more impressive
13:16considering the fact that uh prediction market app downloads are actually down almost 20 percent
13:21uh year over year from last year because last year is when they really started to explode first
13:27with the presidential election where that was the first time we really heard about these apps
13:32exploding so the fact that prediction market downloads are actually down almost 20 percent
13:37overall yet calci is up 23 percent really just goes to show you uh it's not relying on election
13:44betting anymore and just how how much it skyrocketed in this last year while you have other apps like
13:49draft kings down and fan duel and virtually every other sports betting app down those apps are down
13:53downloads are about uh 10 percent year over year now there is a little bit of a outlier because last
14:00year you had the jake paul and mike tyson fight which was responsible for the most sports betting
14:05download apps of any single event of the year outside of the super bowl so that's a tough comp from last
14:10year but again prediction markets dealing with their own tough comp of the presidential election last
14:16year and they just continue to surge continue to get downloaded through these new partnerships you
14:20mentioned uh the one that fanatics has just agreed to with crypto.com calci and polymarket both have
14:26partnerships with x now polymarket also partnering with truth social the president's social media
14:32platform uh and also both partnering with the nhl as well and that'll be another really interesting
14:37thing to monitor whether these apps make more partnerships with leagues because largely
14:42uh the mlb the nba other leagues which are facing their own integrity issues uh have warned the cftc that
14:49hey these prediction markets don't have the guardrails and you know overall structure that kind of is meant
14:56to safeguard everything that sports books have so it'll be really interesting to see maybe if one of
15:00those leagues changes their mind when you know the the downloads for these apps are just getting too high
15:05and the popularity is just getting too big but definitely something we're going to keep watching is whether
15:09how she can even you know surge past prize picks and underdog which right now are behind draft kings
15:14and fan duel um i would expect that the downloads to only keep going up until eventually you know maybe
15:18the supreme court decides in a few years finally let's wrap up with another prediction market company
15:24polymarket their ceo making some comments this week that is not going to sit very well with some of
15:30the sports books but at least for the time being anything that you say uh sam right now if it's getting
15:35attention on shows like this it's probably worth mentioning yeah you're definitely right craig uh
15:42it's always going to make headlines when a ceo of one of these big companies by the way which is now
15:47valued at about 15 billion dollars after an investment from new york stock exchange uh he came out this
15:52week and called sportsbooks scam saying that they are not customer friendly attacking them for limiting
15:58bettors which obviously we know happens a lot on sportsbooks but only for a small percentage of people
16:03who are actually really good at sports betting and can make money uh most of their customers i think
16:07about 98 percent are losing so uh it doesn't apply to the retail consumers that these sports books
16:13typically go after as an entertainment option but he touted prediction markets as a more transparent
16:18uh way to do sports betting where you know you're not playing against the house you're playing against
16:24other players and um they have less of a built-in edge it comes at a funny time because the parlays
16:30that calci just launched are now under new scrutiny after a sportico report revealed that those are
16:35actually very tilted against uh the players themselves because of their own mechanism where
16:40it's harder for users to access different options that market makers who work for the app can actually
16:45make so that's under a new spotlight as well and it also comes at a time when fanduel and draftkings
16:51the very companies he's calling scams are about to launch their own prediction markets within the next
16:55month so we'll really see if in fact the product that polymarket is offering is superior to these
17:01other companies which he's called scams and are now just going to launch their own prediction markets
17:06uh i would imagine they will be very happy and very hopeful to kind of combat um you know what
17:13shane copeland is saying with their own better superior product i know fanduel has made it a point that
17:18they want to have the leading prediction market offering by next april which will come in you know
17:22very very short amount of time they haven't even launched yet so um yeah he's making headlines with
17:27these statements for sure but whether they hold water is kind of another question entirely
