00:00Now for tonight's house call, Dr. Mariana Brown shares with us signs of how your viral illness is becoming serious.
00:08The following segment is brought to you by Venture Credit Union. Why just dream when you can venture?
00:25Most viral illnesses, like the common cold or flu, improve with rest and supportive care.
00:32However, in some cases, symptoms can become serious.
00:38Tonight on House Call, we're discussing the warning signs that a viral illness is becoming severe.
00:44And when it's time to seek medical attention and care.
00:49One of the most important warning signs to look out for is hypoxia, meaning oxygen levels in the body are
00:56low.
00:57This can occur when the lungs are not functioning properly due to inflammation or infection.
01:04Warning signs of worsening illness include shortness of breath at rest or with minimal activity,
01:11difficulty breathing, which can look like rapid breathing, struggling to get air or using extra muscles to breathe.
01:20Reduced or slurred speech, being unable to speak in full sentences or pain confused can indicate low oxygen levels affecting
01:30the brain.
01:31Weakness or extreme fatigue, being unable to stand or carry out basic activities is a red flag.
01:40Lastly, audible wheezing or chest tightness.
01:45A whistling sound when you breathe can indicate inflammation within the airways.
01:51A simple tool that can help at home is known as a pulse oximeter, a small device that is placed
01:58on the finger that can measure oxygen levels.
02:01If readings are consistently below 94%, this indicates low oxygen levels or hypoxia and should prompt immediate medical evaluation.
02:12Certain individuals are at higher risk, including those greater than the age of 65, individuals that have asthma or other
02:22lung conditions,
02:23individuals with chronic disease illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension or heart disease, and those with a weakened immune system.
02:33If you fall into one of these groups, it is important to seek medical attention early.
02:39The key message is this.
02:42Don't wait until symptoms become critical.
02:46If you or a loved one experience shortness of breath, difficulty speaking, extreme weakness or low oxygen levels,
02:55seek medical attention immediately.
02:59Early intervention can prevent complications and save lives.
