00:00Track and field athlete Terence Skinner turns up to compete in shot put on a hot Sunday afternoon at the Hesley Crawford training field.
00:07Who is in his division? No one. So is winning the objective for this 76-year-old?
00:13Well, I always do that. I decide, you know, just to keep fit and participate and get points or whatever.
00:23But it's something I used to do all together, shot put, discuss. So I still try to maintain that variety.
00:31He explains it's a competition you will only know when or if you are lucky enough to reach his age and have the capability to do what he can.
00:44It's a sport that works at the brain and the body to grip the ball, balance his feet and take aim while following the rules.
00:52Do you have any injuries, ailments? Not presently. You know, no, a groin injury, but may last for two weeks or so, but nothing major.
01:01So who is Terence Skinner? He is the brother of Edwin Skinner, former National Olympian and coach of Memphis Pioneers.
01:08He also has other brothers that excelled in sport. His journey continues where theirs may have ended or put on pause.
01:15What age do you plan to compete up to? As long as my body allows me to.
01:21See, there's a daily question I ask it. Can I go at it again?
01:26There's next to no one there to see him motivate himself to get out of bed before turning up to compete.
01:32But from the looks of it, he doesn't need fans to celebrate the victory of having health on his side and he would encourage others to join him.
01:49Because there are a lot of people out there that keep fit, but somehow they stay away from competing.
01:56So some special marketing plan has to be developed to attract them, to come to the meets.
02:02At 76, Skinner tells me he travels the world to chase records.
02:06As recent as last month, Skinner competed at the Barbados Senior Games.
02:10He blazed away in the men's 75-79 100-meter field in 15.79 seconds
02:17and was victorious in the long jump with a 3.05 meters leap, proving that you are never too old for sport.
