Transcript
00:00Come Saturday, visually impaired individuals will be competing in the
00:04Goalball National Tournament at the Pleasantville Indoor Sporting Facility.
00:08It starts at 8 a.m. From this competition, organizers are hoping to select a
00:12national team for regional tournaments and to get visually impaired
00:16individuals involved in more sports. One of the most soft objectives would be for
00:22the tournament, you know, we want to bring awareness to the sport, we want to bring
00:25general awareness that persons with learning and visually impaired can move, we can play
00:29competitively, we can function at, you know, high-intensity sporting activities
00:33as well as, you know, engage the public and get them to see what we are capable of.
00:41Complete silence is needed for the sport which has 12 minutes per half. It has
00:46also provided a place for athletes to elong. How challenging is it? Well,
00:51basically it can be challenging because if you are a low-vision person
00:57especially who are accustomed to moving around with little sight and now
01:04you're thrown in a world where it's complete darkness, you have to be
01:08blindfolded, you have to now depend on your ear and your listening skills to
01:15move around on the court, especially to hear that ball coming towards you.
01:28Well, I would say it's a very agile sport, so it gives your entire body that
01:36exercise. Coach of the team is Francis Haynes. These athletes here, they show
01:43that they are capable of anything. When you put, what we say, vision, people who have
01:49vision on the court, they are totally lost, but these athletes are totally fine on the court.
01:54Their ultimate goal is to participate in the Paralympics in 2028. For Saturday's
01:59tournament, look out for defending champions all-stars and a new champion
02:02will be crowned for the women. Sergio Dufour, TV6 Sport.
