00:00It may look simple, but can you imagine playing football without running?
00:21Well, let me introduce you to walking football.
00:24Walking football is designed for players who still want to compete, play at a level
00:31to enjoy themselves and keep a level of fitness, with less injuries, with people tackling from
00:41behind and slight tackling and that kind of stuff.
00:44So they have a lot of rules in regards to what you can do and what you can't do.
00:49In respect to the ball going over the shoulder, it's an infringement, which you have to turn
00:53the ball over to the next team.
00:57And at this age, you don't want to be getting into aggressive contact with players and stuff
01:06like that.
01:07As we caught up with some players and teams in action at the Mount St. Benedict's football
01:11field on Sunday, and one of the players threw out an invitation and challenge for others
01:17to try out the sport.
01:18I'm one of the people trying to take walking football out of Trinidad and Tobago public.
01:24We're trying to spread this walking football.
01:26I mean, it's been around for quite a while internationally.
01:30There are not many people in Trinidad who know about walking football.
01:33I mean, just telling people, sometimes they ask you questions like, what is walking football?
01:38That sounds like an old man, lazy man sport.
01:40But I mean, I'm there and anyone out there who plays running football, come and try this
01:44and tell me what you all think.
01:45Because there are a lot of people who play running football who have tried this already
01:48and there's problems with them.
01:50I mean, there's a lot of movement of the ball.
01:52It could teach people who play running football basic skills in running football.
01:57As mentioned, walking football is gaining popularity with an 18-nation World Cup held
02:02last year, with England the current holders of the men's and women's title.
02:06So if you're interested in giving walking football a chance, you can check them out
02:10every Thursday and Sunday, either St. Mary's Ground or contact Terrence Alexander at 688-4243.
02:18And if you're still unsure, here's another reason to consider walking football.
02:22The intensity of it, I come off, I could play 90 minutes walking football and the next day
02:27I'm good.
02:29But it's the intensity of it, you build up a real good sweat.
02:32I've been losing weight, I've been feeling healthier.
02:34So it's a good thing to join.
