TWO DIE IN TRAGIC PTSC BUS ACCIDENT

Two people are now dead following an early-morning accident involving a transport truck and a PTSC bus.  The accident occurred just after eight Tuesday morning, causing traffic to back up for miles on the south bound lane of the Uriah Butler Highway. Rynessa Cutting has more.

00:00PTSC bus driver Mustafa Khan and SWAT officer Roxanne Philip became the country's latest accident victims

00:08when the bus driven by Khan collided with the back of a flatbed truck while traveling south along the Uriah Butler Highway this morning.

00:17The rear end of the truck pierced to the front glass of the bus and sent the bus careening off the roadway into a nearby grassy ditch.

00:25The fast service was called in and officers had to use a ladder to remove the traumatized passengers.

00:33Multiple ambulances responded and an unconfirmed number of persons were transported to hospital

00:38while the driver of the truck is said to have sustained minor injuries.

00:43In a release today, the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation said,

00:47Minister Senator Eliza Kuru extends his deepest condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of those affected by the tragic accident.

00:58The Ministry is urging all road users to exercise the utmost care and responsibility on the country's road network.

01:06Meantime, Chief Traffic Engineer Adande Piggott is sharing the following advice.

01:12We have seen a number of incidents and accidents across the nation roads

01:18and we like all motorists to, you know, take your time, observe the road rules, observe the signage on the road, pavement markings

01:30and if you aren't clear on how to use the roads, you know, go back, look at the highways codes

01:36and see how you should operate a motor vehicle, even as a pedestrian, how to operate on the roadway.

01:45We all have to take this thing a little bit more seriously.

01:50It's a privilege to be on the road and we have to ensure that we protect ourselves and our families

01:55and our neighbours while you're on the road network system because road safety is everyone's business.
