Prime Minister Stuart Young is expressing optimism about this country's Dragon Gas deal with Venezuela following his bi-lateral meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Jamaica on Wednesday.

During Thursday's -Cabinet media briefing, the Prime Minister indicated this is due to a very specific statement made by the U.S Secretary of State.

Juhel Browne reports.
Transcript
00:00Prime Minister Stuart Young said that during his bilateral meeting with the US
00:04Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Jamaica, he highlighted Trinidad and
00:08Tobago's liquefied natural gas and ammonia exports, as well as how the deal
00:13for the supply of natural gas from Venezuela's Dragonfield to Trinidad and
00:18Tobago would affect the rest of CARICOM. I was happy that in that conversation
00:24Secretary of State Rubio did indicate that he was pleased for this
00:29information because he was getting it first hand. He understood and he said
00:34that US foreign policy is in no way meant to affect or harm Trinidad and
00:41Tobago in particular with what we're doing for energy security. TV6 used a
00:47sort of clarification from Prime Minister Young since the lifting of
00:50certain sanctions on Venezuela's oil and gas occurred while Joe Biden was the US
00:57President. Are you seeking, was the government seeking similar exemptions or
01:02exceptions concerning the present tariff and other sanctions issues being
01:10implemented by the present administration under President Trump?
01:14So the answer to that question is that is part of what the conversation was
01:19about yesterday. Prime Minister Young then spoke about the license Trinidad and
01:24Tobago received from the US in 2023. As was discussed between Secretary of State
01:30Rubio and myself, our UFAC license is in place until October. Do you recognize
01:36that? The landscape is changing. For example, the introduction of tariffs or
01:41the suggestion of introduction of tariffs. So the opportunity that I got on
01:46behalf of Trinidad and Tobago yesterday to sit down with the person who is in
01:50charge of deciding and there is a lot of discretion in there. How things are
01:56to be applied is invaluable for Trinidad and Tobago. Prime Minister Young said work
02:01on the drug and gas project by Shell is ongoing.
