The People's National Movement Parliamentary Caucus Retreat in Tobago got underway in Tobago on Sunday and continues on Monday. As expected a major talking point would be the announcement by the Prime Minister that he would be stepping down. Speaking with the media Minister of Trade Paula Gopee-Scoon said the Prime Minister's 45 year service to this country was nothing short of outstanding. More from Elizabeth Williams.
00:00He's given enough to this country. He's done a lot. It's been 45 years and I don't think people have really stood by to count his contribution and to really assess how impactful he has been.
00:17In my view, he's been an outstanding Prime Minister and I could only be happy for him so that he walks off and enjoys the rest of his life.
00:26Who do you think would make a worthy successor?
00:29I'm not going to say that now. I'm not going to add fuel to fire. Let that be settled internally and I'm sure that the PNM will carry a trailblazer as we've always done.
00:40Certainly I know that we will win the next election.
00:43National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hines and the Minister in the Ministry of Housing, Adrian Lyons, also spoke with the media.
00:51From my observation, given sufficient explanation, so please you may communicate further with him.
00:56Any thoughts on his successor or any thoughts on him leaving office, his legacy?
01:02I must say to the world that Tobago is a very beautiful and scenic environment and I encourage the world to visit Tobago.
01:10So much has been done to encourage and to make tourists happy and comfortable here and it's a very wonderful experience for us. Thank you all very much.
01:20Mr Lyons, any thoughts?
01:22Any thoughts on the Prime Minister leaving?
01:25Finance Minister Colm Imbert was also on hand but dodged all questions on the Prime Minister leaving office.
01:32Mr Imbert, come on, just a short comment from you as to how you feel.
01:38You know what kind of comment you'll get from me.
01:40What kind of comment?
01:41Have a nice day.
01:43You know, what's your view? What's your view of his legacy, the Prime Minister's legacy?
01:47Isn't it a beautiful day?
01:49The sun is shining.
01:51However, Minister Imbert was keen to speak about the A&R Robinson International Airport expansion and how he was impressed with what he had seen of the project
02:03and promised that the media would tour the new facility next month.
02:07And what about the A&R Robinson International Airport?
02:10Actually, I went there yesterday.
02:13How is everything looking?
02:15On target. Looking fantastic.
02:18It's huge, eh?
02:19Yes, it is.
02:20Look at how big it is.
02:21It's one of the biggest airports in the Caribbean.
02:23And I'm surprised that, you know, the quality of the work and the spaces available and the facilities.
