00:00Just one day after Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Besessa was sworn into office at President's House, she spoke on the phone with the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
00:09In a statement on Friday, the State Department said, quote,
00:12Today, Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Besessa to congratulate her on being elected.
00:20They discussed strengthening our partnership to advance regional security and mutual priorities.
00:26The Secretary reaffirmed the United States' strong and enduring partnership with Trinidad and Tobago, grounded in deep historic ties and shared goals for regional security and prosperity, end quote.
00:39An ongoing example of those shared goals is the Trade Winds 25, which began on April 26th and ends on May 8th in Trinidad and Tobago, being co-hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force and the U.S. Southern Command-sponsored U.S. Army South.
00:54The State Department further said that the U.S. commends the people of Trinidad and Tobago for their continued commitment to democratic values and institutions demonstrated through their free and fair national elections.
01:06The State Department noted that Secretary Rubio and Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Besessa discussed opportunities to enhance cooperation on mutual priorities, regional security and defense cooperation.
01:18Soon after the general election on Monday, in a statement on the social media platform X, Secretary Rubio congratulated Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Besessa and described her as a strong leader, friend and U.S. ally who shares President Donald Trump's priorities on security and immigration.
01:34Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Besessa's full cabinet will be sworn into office on Saturday and there is keen interest in who will be appointed to take charge of the national security portfolio.
