00:00Good evening and welcome to the past 7 days on 6. I am Renessa Cutting as what made the
00:23news this past week. Marshall Montano partied away with his 11th roadmatch win. Sealot residents
00:30sought the help of the police amid an internal war and the acting Prime Minister promised
00:36more protection for victims of gender-based violence. As per usual if it was happening
00:42it was on 6. Let's get right into it. Marshall Montano walked away with his 11th roadmatch
00:49title last week while the lost tribe found themselves band of the year again. Here's
00:55a look back at the action. Our roadmatch for 2025 Tuko B-Mobile roadmatch for 2025 is party
01:08by Marshall Montano played across the nation 267 plays. It's official Marshall Montano
01:20has copped his 11th roadmatch title adding his 2025 party to the list. He is now tied
01:27with Old Wind Lord Kitchener Roberts with 11 such titles. Montano's power song was played
01:33some 267 times at Tuko's various judging points. Hot on the party trail was Ian Bunchy
01:52Garland Alvarez's Carry It. That song was played 253 times. Bunchy didn't end there
02:10he went away with third place with his other offering thousands which played 22 times.
02:17The bands of the year were also announced. In the large band category the lost tribe
02:22copped the coveted title of band of the year with 1324 points. It retained the top spot with
02:30its presentation Lost in Time. This marks its third band of the year title for band leader
02:37Valmiki Maharaj. In the medium man category K2K Alliance and partners won with their presentation
02:44titled Holy Trespasses Life's Bitter Sweet and Savory Moments. It is the eighth medium band of
02:51the year title for the women-run band. In the small band category Authentic Indian Mass would
02:57dominate with Tribal Connection Cultural Promotions beating 15 other bands to attain a final score
03:04of 1168 and topping the category. And in the mini category the majestic Moco Sumoco,
03:14though not impressing judges on Dimash Grande night, they went away with Bragging Rights and
03:19the top spot on Carnival Tuesday with their presentation Cane, the 1805 Christmas Rebellion.
03:30Meantime Helan Francis dethroned Marshall Montano to be crowned the Calypso Monarch 2025
03:37with the letter he penned to whom it may be. But all the competitors had their say through song
03:42on the day-to-day operations of TNT. Historically Calypso has been used as a form of political
03:49expression. From the way enslaved Africans use rhythmic vocals to express their approval
04:06or disapproval of the way things are being done. Centuries later in this Gael it is clear all is not
04:14well. The country appears to not have the leadership qualities desired.
04:44Maybe we just need to forget the leaders and carry on in unity ourselves.
05:14Maybe those leaders need to go on their own.
05:45One competitor was not afraid to name the antagonist in his story,
05:50saying in the big yard none is exempt from critique.
06:15So
06:19independent senator Helan Francis was not as risky in his commentary.
07:15So when the results were announced Francis emerged the winner with 268 points to a
07:23somewhat disgruntled crowd response. I'm in the senate as an independent senator
07:29so I always take the approach of a balanced perspective. Most of the time at least.
07:35I would have my views on the island and I would try to put them in the best way possible in song.
07:46Things that the nation would need to know at this period, at this part of our history.
07:53So I think that might be the edge. Francis himself said he was just like the other competitors
07:59other competitors, noting this competition this year was stiff.
08:04It so happened he said he was the winner on the deciding night. Kurt Allen just a single
08:10point behind placed second and newcomer Yungbretta walking away third with 260 points.
08:18We had a quick break. We'll have more news when we return.
08:20Welcome back. The acting police commissioner commended his officers for providing what he
08:33called a generally safe carnival but he acknowledged that two homicides during
08:38carnival left him with a bittersweet feeling. The acting top cop also spoke about the reduction
08:43in homicides as this country continues to be under a state of emergency.
08:48Acting police commissioner Junior Benjamin said he had a bittersweet feeling as he led
08:53the police services media briefing on Ash Wednesday where he spoke about the police
08:57presence during the two days of the parade of the bands on carnival Monday and Tuesday.
09:03We had at least two homicides that took place during the carnival period and this is where
09:10probably that damper probably comes upon what we did because it was something that again was
09:17rather unfortunate. We want to take the opportunity at this time to first of all
09:23extend condolences to the families. One of those homicides occurred in Saint James on
09:29carnival Tuesday evening. The acting top cop extended condolences on behalf of the police
09:34service to the families of those two murder victims before reviewing the performance of
09:39the police on carnival Monday and Tuesday and the weekend leading up to those two mass days.
09:46Because of the deployment of our officers and the fact that they were nearly everywhere at
09:53every corner these two situations and homicides we can say today that the suspects in both
10:03homicides they were apprehended and they are in the custody of the police. The goal of the
10:09commander for carnival assistant police commissioner Richard Smith said a firearm
10:13and a knife related to those homicides were seized and are in the custody of the police.
10:19The acting police commissioner spoke about the murder statistics this year so far. When we look
10:25at our murder statistics to date we have at least 66 murders compared to 95 in 2024 and 111 in 2023
10:40and therefore this a 31 percent decrease. Again the Trinidad and Tobago police service we take
10:48absolutely no great satisfaction because we understand very clearly that crime is not static
10:58and it's very dynamic it can change. However we want you to know that we continue in the midst of
11:05an SOE still seeking to ensure that the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago are well taken care of.
11:13A reference to the state of emergency in effect that does not include a curfew and does not have
11:18any restrictions on public gatherings such as the carnival fests or the parade of the bands
11:24on carnival Monday and Tuesday. We have a general overview that the carnival was generally a safe
11:32one and for this we want to take the opportunity to first and foremost thank all our police
11:41officers for really turning up and ensuring that we are able to at least be outside there and create
11:49that level of safety and security. The acting top cop also thanked the public for their assistance.
11:56Jewel Brown TV6 News. A community is divided and some Sealot West residents claimed the war is due
12:05to political affiliations and benefits. Desperate for peace the residents invited the police for a
12:11meeting last week but not even the presence of police deterred one faction from orchestrating
12:17an attack. Now even as police were meeting with Sealot West residents an attack was being
12:23perpetrated right here mere meters away along the Beetham Highway.
12:28This as was ensued among three factions of what was once one community.
12:41It was shortly after midday when chaos erupted on Pioneer Drive in Sealots after a Sealot West
12:54resident was attacked as residents were gathered at the community center with police. The residents
13:00had invited the police for a meeting in the hope of bringing an end to a war between Sealot East,
13:06West and the Beetham Highway Sealots which has seen at least 12 people attacked
13:11over the course of this week.
13:27So this is gang related?
13:37The younger ones like myself and the others we might have a little beef.
13:44Some of them might not be in the beef but when they see them out there
13:49they come around them hitting them big stones slapping them up. Don't let ageable woman get slapped up.
13:56Another victim is nursing broken bones.
14:07Yeah but I don't want to slap everybody or anybody so I didn't expect that to happen to me.
14:13I didn't expect that to happen to me or to everybody.
14:19However some residents told the police that the war is rooted in political affiliations
14:24and benefits. Sealot is now separated into three segments. Sealot West, Sealot East
14:32and Beetham Highway Sealots. These three communities are now at war. Some of the
14:39residents are claiming that the war is politically based where some sections are getting
14:45contracts and other sections are not getting contracts and that is really fueling the war.
14:49We're seeing development in some areas and no development in others. So our approach
14:56would be to reach out to the various community leaders because while we might want to say we
15:01want to meet everybody at the same time we recognize how volatile that can be. So the wise
15:07approach is to meet with the various sections under their respective heads chart the way forward
15:13and eventually we'd want to have one meeting with everybody at a round table and be able to bring
15:20some level of normalcy back to that community. In the interim what the police have done is that
15:26they've established around the clock police presence within the Sealot area because it's
15:32not just the young police involved they're also attacking the elders, they're also attacking
15:36senior citizens and we cannot just leave that to continue. So until we meet with all the sections
15:41the police have established a heavy presence within the Sealot community. Will you all be
15:46setting up a post also? No, no, no. We simply don't have the resources to set up a police post
15:53but we'll have the statics. So at Pioneer Drive, at Production Avenue, further down near to the
15:59lighthouse we'll have officers on standby and officers roving as well so that we're able to
16:04maintain that presence and we can respond accordingly in case of any eventuality. The
16:10women of Sealot West have banded together calling for peace and they're urging their counterparts
16:16in the other factions to do the same. We don't want war, we're not about it. We lost too much.
16:22It's too much funeral we attend to, too much graves we dig and too much tears we have spread
16:29on our children. Now the ones that's here, what we gonna do? Let them end up the same way? No.
16:36We are who's going to take the blame so why we can't take front now and protect where we live
16:41because this is where we live. This is where we home is and this is where the children is.
16:47So if we can't fight for anything else, why can't we fight for our home because we're losing it
16:52amongst ourselves. We wake up, too long we have been sleeping. Now we're up and we're
16:59fighting and we're not giving up. This is the past seven days on six. We'll be right back.
17:12Also happening last week, a high court judge ordered the military museum be handed back to
17:18its operators after they were evicted by the Chagoramas Development Authority. It's victory
17:24for the Chagoramas Military Museum. President of the Chagoramas Military Museum Linda Kelsholt
17:30celebrates as the Chagoramas Development Authority has been ordered by High Court Justice
17:35Devendra Rampersad to return the premises to the museum until Monday's court proceedings.
17:42So happy we can get in here today. First thing I want to thank God for letting us in here today.
17:54And I would like to ask the people of Trinidad and Tobago, this piece of land is a lot of heritage,
18:06history and I would like this piece of land to stay on, go on and on and on.
18:17I can't wait to walk in. Four days ago, the Chagoramas Development Authority announced
18:23it took possession of the premises, saying the occupiers were offered numerous opportunities
18:28over the years to regularize their tenancy, but refused.
18:31Well, here is her home also as well. She lived here for the past 30 years.
18:36My late husband, he was watching over us.
18:44Now he's watching over us. He's back.
18:51The museum was created by late Lieutenant Commander Gaylord Kelsholt, Linda's husband,
18:57who collected and preserved artifacts of TNT's military history. On its Facebook page,
19:03the museum says it will inform the public when it will be reopened for visitors.
19:08And the Attorney General's office announced that following what it calls a collaborative process
19:14led by the Minister and the Office of the Attorney General, Renuka Sagram Singh Suklal,
19:18steps were taken for the consideration of potential amendments to the Hindu marriage
19:23regulations under the Hindu Marriage Act. The AG's office said AG Reginald Amor referred a
19:29report with the proposed amendments to the Law Reform Commission. The AG's office added that
19:35the AG directed the Law Reform Commission to examine the potential for similar policy
19:41consideration for reform in other sectors of the national community, with a view for greater
19:46national recognition of women's rights. Well, one week before he was due to assume his role
19:52as Prime Minister, Stuart Young promised more protection for women. On the occasion of
19:58International Women's Day, Acting Prime Minister Stuart Young has a special tribute. I pay a special
20:05tribute and I welcome someone who not only brought me into the world, literally, but has carried me
20:13and my family for the last, well for me personally, the last 50 years. And someone I'd like to pay
20:20some special tribute to here this morning. My mother was braved a public appearance this
20:27morning. If we can give my mum, Priscilla Young, a round of applause. Though omitting the first
20:34female Prime Minister, Kamala Prasad Bisaso, Young says it makes him a proud Trinbagonian
20:40to see women in leadership positions. We were the first to have, quite rightly, the head of our state
20:49being a powerful woman, then succeeded by our current head of state, another powerful woman,
20:55the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House. At an International Women's Day
21:01breakfast meeting, he sought to give a personal testimony. I smile when I see the many stories
21:07and the many narratives being put forward of me, and who I am, and where I've come from,
21:13and these types of things. Because you see, I have no intention of engaging those conversations,
21:20because to me those are shallow conversations, and we as a society are beyond that.
21:26Young calls himself a product of a strong woman in a household, and that is what he
21:32envisions for all children of TNT. How is it that we now as a government can introduce
21:39things via policy, but I am more concerned about implementation, to provide as much as we can
21:48that level of support to the women throughout our society, to ensure that every young child,
21:56or as many young children as we can, because I'm realistic and pragmatic,
21:59can get the benefits of women who have support, women who have the ability to have people to speak to, etc.
22:12It means more penalties for those responsible for crimes against women.
22:17You see domestic violence, both with intimate partners and non-intimate partners,
22:24we are going to take on that scourge frontally. One of the things that I'll be asking
22:29the opposition in parliament at the appropriate time to do, is for us to increase the penalties
22:36and the sentencing for those who commit those heinous acts on our women.
22:45And more protection for the women who need it.
22:49Providing more protection when women take the step of getting protection orders,
22:56and not letting it just be a piece of paper, that is also something I intend for us to focus heavily on.
23:03And after seeing the struggles of young mothers in his constituency,
23:07to be able to provide for their children, mental health care is on its way.
23:12I understand that a big part of support that we the government can give to them,
23:17is providing those who are trained, whether it be psychiatrists, psychologists,
23:23persons who can listen, who can offer advice, I intend to go to the cabinet to ask,
23:29because there are a lot of young people who have studied in those areas,
23:33for us to implement programs utilising the Ministry of Social Development, Family Services,
23:37I know we have it in the Ministry of Education, out of the office of the Prime Minister,
23:42to offer that professional level of support across Trinidad and Tobago.
23:48The acting Prime Minister, on the cusp of a general election,
23:52did not leave without lobbying votes.
23:55We have decisions to make in the next few months, and I'm asking you to very carefully reflect
24:02on whose actions have spoken louder in the last few years,
24:08as we make a decision as to who will lead us forward.
24:11Sport is up next, keep it here.
24:19In sport, the Red Force Divas are women's Super 50 champions for the first time in eight years,
24:25after beating Barbados by seven wickets in the final.
24:28Star spin bowler Nisa Mohammed took three wickets to bowl out Barbados for 71,
24:34a total that was cheese on bread for the Divas.
24:37The youngsters out in the middle.
24:39It was a good decision by TNT to put Barbados into bat in the women's Super 50 Cup final in St. Kitts.
24:45The spin attack did well in keeping the runs down and taking wickets.
24:50Asabi Kalinder was the top scorer with 28, while the others failed with Willow in hand.
25:00Captain Karishma Ramharak was frugal, taking 2 for 12 from 8 overs.
25:06Samara Ramnath was also good with a wide cherry.
25:08Ramnath picked up 2 herself, with Janaba Joseph taking a superb catch in the deep.
25:16Amrita Ramtehal was also on the money, taking 2 for 5 from 4 overs.
25:23But the one grabbing the most scabs was the experienced Anisa Mohammed.
25:28Second catch for keeper Shukla was a good one,
25:30but she missed it by a hair's breadth.
25:33But the one grabbing the most scabs was the experienced Anisa Mohammed.
25:37Second catch for keeper Chanel Sow.
25:41Mohammed finished with 3 for 17 as Barbados capitulated for 71 in 29 overs.
25:48When TNT responded, Chanel Sow and Janaba Joseph put on 21 for the first wicket.
25:56Sow was gone for 9, with Shamelia Cornell getting the scab.
26:02Joseph was circumspect, hitting just one boundary in her 28.
26:09Brittany Cooper fell for 17, with Cornell ending with 2 wickets.
26:16Joseph was the next batter to depart, but the Red Force Divas were nearly home.
26:24Leanne Kirby got the job done in style as TNT reached 75 for 3 in the 24th over,
26:29to be crowned Queens of the Caribbean.
26:32Venu, now on ITV6port.
