A 65-year-old Maraval woman was fatally shot while liming with friends in Penal on Sunday afternoon.

She was struck in the neck by a bullet while seated on a chair near the road at the front of her friend’s home.

On Monday, friends called for justice for the senseless killing and urged young people to put down the guns and do better.

00:00To celebrate her friend's 8th year birthday, Quinton Markano left her Maraval home and
00:06journeyed to Rochard Road, Pinal, as was customary whenever they had gatherings.
00:12On Sunday, they cooked duck and provision.
00:15There was a prayer service, and that evening, about five of them sat on chairs chatting
00:20at the front of the home where Markano was killed.
00:23And we heard gunshot rang out, and my cousin say, it's gun, it's shooting, it's shooting,
00:31it's shooting a gun, it's shooting a gun, run.
00:34And everybody run from the road, right, and when we turn around now, we see she didn't
00:41come off the chair, so we go and call on she, call on she.
00:46So I say she must be faint or something, and when we call on she now, everybody started
00:52to bawl because we see blood coming on she clothes, and when she neck turn, we see that
00:57she had a bullet hole in her neck.
01:02Markano was rushed to the Separia Health Facility, but she was pronounced dead on arrival there.
01:08The woman whose birthday was being celebrated says she was in the gallery when the shooting
01:13occurred.
01:14So as we talk, you know, I hear this gunshot, and I'm telling them, I say, what, the shooting
01:19up again, this gunshot, I tell you, I hear this gun, I always hear gunshot, you know,
01:25this is a gunshot, people always, they're always shooting, I think, and I say, gunshot
01:30again, and then I hear they start to bawl, going down the step, and my son say, mommy,
01:35no, no, you can't go, you can't go, I say, they say Tusi now get shot, I say, I want
01:40to see Tusi now, he say, no, mommy, you can't see Tusi now, you can't see Tusi now.
01:48I can't see Tusi now, mommy.
01:54According to police reports, around 5.30 p.m. on Sunday, gunshots were heard from across
01:59the road, and a man wearing a black ski mask was seen running from the scene.
02:04Residents say they have no idea who or if anyone was specifically targeted, but were
02:09outraged that a stray bullet left their close friend dead.
02:14They called for justice and for young people to put down the guns and turn away from a
02:19life of crime.
