A 16-year-old boy was accidentally shot dead by a 15-year-old female relative on Friday afternoon.

According to reports the teenagers found a firearm in a clothes basket at another relative’s home and while the girl was playing with it, it went off, hitting the boy.

Our cameraman Immanuel Nunez spoke with the victim’s grandmother today at the family’s Guico Tamana Road, Sangre Grande home, reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh tells us more.

00:07p.m. on Friday.
00:09According to reports, the children were playing with a firearm they found in a closed basket
00:14while at another relative's home in Sangre Grandi.
00:18Jeremiah, who is from Lahoketa, was in the area for the holidays.
00:23Police reports suggest that when the children found the gun, they began to play with it
00:28and while in the hands of the teenaged girl, it accidentally fired a bullet, piercing Jeremiah's
00:34head.
00:35The mother was washing right outside and they was inside doing live, no doing live, yes
00:44and some Instagram, what kind of madness, right and it's when she said she hear the
00:51ball in then she run, running inside but that time the little girl when she shoot the ball
00:55she run down the hill and so they run up and down like a madman.
00:59They contacted the police and rushed the boy to hospital but he was pronounced dead around
01:046 p.m.
01:05The victim's grandmother believes the children's use of social media contributed to the tragic
01:11turn of events.
01:12I want to tell them stop the social media, stop this TikTok because that will have my
01:17little grandson there today, that TikTok and that social media because they was inside
01:21Fleming and not the first time they inside Fleming thing there but not with gun but with
01:25the gun thing, as I tell you, I don't know but that is a show off thing, they get the
01:32gun and they set a show off but I don't know nothing about that.
01:36She says other children witnessed the shooting and are all traumatised.
01:40She hopes counselling can be provided as one child has been screaming out and another has
01:46been seen silently crying.
01:48The grandmother hopes that children can learn from this incident that if they see something
01:54they know is dangerous to contact an adult.
01:57They say that if children you get something, you see something, bring it and give it to
02:01your parents.
02:02She says she had no information about the firearm, who it belonged to or how it came
02:07into the children's possession, however she commended the team of officers who responded
02:13to the call on Friday in the way they treated the family of both the victim and the girl
02:18who remained in police custody today.
