Lingering chill to depart the South just in time for rain to return

After the coldest air of the season hits Florida on Friday night, rain will be returning to the Gulf Coast this Sunday.

00:00we're going to be keeping an eye out for some changes brewing. Overall, we're

00:03looking at the arrival of some widespread rain. I know you're gonna be

00:06jumping in on some of this in the south central and I'll talk about the

00:09southeast impacts coming our way. Yeah, it's another kind of split forecast

00:13impacting multiple regions here over the next couple of days. Well, two big

00:17stories that we continue to attract this friday evening. The first in the

00:20nation's southern states, the lingering chill on the heels of that historic

00:24snowfall. That cold weather was also the cause for this mornings and every

00:29morning. This week's slippery commute for travelers. In the meantime,

00:32southern California fire crews continue to struggle to contain several wild

00:36fires in the region. There is good news though. We're tracking some much needed

00:39rain just in time for the weekend. We'll details on that coming up. But

00:44first, let's take you to a live look at new Orleans, Louisiana. This is a view

00:47we've been pulling up a lot over the last couple of days and take a look at

00:50that sunset over the traffic. Yeah, very nice. Not bad there at all. Louisiana

00:57D. O. T. Still keeping a small portion of I 10 closed actually. But overall

01:02this morning's snow covered data still showing a decent amount of it out

01:05there. But a beautiful sunset at least it's going to be cold tonight. We'll

01:09talk about how low we go. But again, some of the reports here along the I

01:1210 just amazing 8.9 inches of snow earlier this week in Pensacola. Some of

01:16the snow cover still survives in through this friday night. The

01:20satellite radar combination. There's a cold front moving off through extreme

01:24south florida. A secondary stripe of clouds behind the front behind that.

01:28It's going to get colder tonight and we're going to have in fact for some

01:32parts of florida, the coldest night so far this season. We're still at 57 in

01:36Miami. So the drop has yet to really occur there. But we're almost down to

01:40freezing in Nashville right now. And there's that footage from Pensacola

01:44with snow covering the beaches and the palm trees. Really cool stuff. But the

01:49coldest of the season for central florida will be tonight with readings

01:54down to 37 in Orlando, 38 degrees into Fort Myers. Very nippy out there, 25

01:59in Jacksonville, upper teens in Tallahassee and Savannah 22. How does

02:04this stack up to the records? We're going to be close, maybe not fully

02:08committed to breaking or tying true records for the date, but we're going

02:11to be within about a degree of that in Fort Myers. The record was set just 22

02:16years ago at 37. We're taking it down to 38 tomorrow morning. Puerto Gorda

02:20record is 34 from that same day. 22 years ago, we're looking at 36 Lakeland,

02:24florida 32. We're forecasting 35 will be about three degrees off of the

02:29record there in to Savannah and Albany Georgia as well. But it's cold out

02:34there. Low twenties in Savannah and Albany. As we take a look at the overall

02:38saturday forecast cold start, no two ways about it. Very cold to begin, but

02:42the sunshine is going to be a little more effective in warming things up and

02:46beginning to melt more of that snow off of the gulf coast. And you can see on

02:49sunday, here comes the moisture streaming in. This initially is more of

02:54a texas and Louisiana impact, but eventually the steering flow will drive

02:58some of that moisture up into Mississippi, into Alabama, Tennessee

03:02and on sunday night, look out for a little bit of a narrow zone where there

03:06could be some mix of rain, snow and ice in parts of I 40s journey through

03:10middle and eastern Tennessee. Ground is still refrigerated and during the day

03:14tomorrow we bounce back nicely and we'll begin to see some moisture stream

03:18into the gulf coast of texas. Yeah, maybe a return to business as usual

03:21here with temperatures in the sixties, the fifties and rain rather than snow

03:26in the forecast. Take a look at how this plays out. It's gonna be real wet

03:30out there and we'll have to keep an eye out for maybe some fog forming where

03:33the ground is still cold with some lingering snow. Even before the rain

03:37rolls in, the dew points gonna rise above freezing. So we'll have kind of

03:40an instant cloud form advection fog. We see this in the midwest, the

03:44northeast, whenever we get a mild spell with snow on the ground, you're not

03:48used to that though in Louisiana. So you could see some fog out there at

03:50times this weekend. One thing you are used to maybe some isolated downpours

03:54and some thunderstorms in the darker green shaded regions between those two

03:57things, just something to keep in mind with travel, especially the fog could

04:01reduce visibility.
