Strong competition on fresh feeder steers at Strathalbyn cattle market

Nutrien Strathalbyn auctioneer Bradlay Walker said there was more weight in this week's full yarding than previous sales.

00:00We had a full yarding which is traditional for this time of the year so we've got a lot of the

00:04same trading names from year in year out. We had a little bit more weight than what we've

00:09recently had. I thought it was a good opportunity for feedlotters to buy those 340 to 420 kilo

00:16cattle today. I'm a bit worried the sale will be full in a fortnight but I think that might

00:21be a lighter yarding so yeah a lot of heavier cattle come forward today. Probably a good

00:25opportunity for some smaller backgrounders and finishers there today. You've probably

00:29seen a bit of a softening trend on those heavier cattle which has happened right across Victoria

00:34and South Australia. So yeah the feeder steers there. The light cattle I was happy with the

00:42line so if you've got a line of nice fresh Angus steers or a line of Angus fresh heifers the

00:47competition was certainly there today and we probably really didn't see much change in those

00:51last couple of sales. So yeah we had a few lines there nudging the $4 a kilogram on those light

00:56black steers and good demand on the heifers. It's just when you come off on a few coloured cattle

01:02or smaller lines that's when your price reduction will come in. Probably haven't seen conditions

01:08like this. It's so dry so every property we go to it's either got some feed but no water

01:13or they've got water but no feed and very reluctant to have the funds to buy in feed.

01:17So that's what we're hitting every time so and hence why the yards are full today,

01:22full in a fortnight. But yeah just you've got to keep working on that breed stock at the mark.
