The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Social and Welfare Association says despite recent developments, it still has confidence in suspended Top Cop, Erla Harewood Christopher. In fact, the Association says it has confidence in all its officers, even as it criticised the management of the arrest and investigation into the Police Commissioner.
Transcript
00:00As the top cop's lawyers were seeking judicial review of her suspension,
00:04the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Social and Welfare Association
00:08was holding a press conference to ventilate issues surrounding the matter,
00:12having made first-hand contact with all parties.
00:15The association have had contact with both Ms. Hilda Christopher,
00:19we have had contact with Ms. Suzette Martin,
00:23we have had contact with DCP George.
00:27If I could say publicly, we haven't had contact with Mr. Benjamin at this point in time,
00:33and we have, as an association,
00:38felt that we have active responsibility in here on all sides,
00:42and we shall see how things play out from there.
00:46But the association president claimed not to be in a position to speak intimately on the issues.
00:52The information we have is very similar to what is in the public space,
00:57and because of what is in the public space,
01:00again we started this interview by saying we don't want to go over and beyond,
01:05because we are not apprised intimately of the intricacies of the investigation.
01:11However, the association was forthcoming with its disappointment
01:15in the matter in which the situation is being handled.
01:18The investigation and how it unfolded in the public domain
01:24was not the best for the image of the organization,
01:29is not the best in an SOE, is not the best as law enforcement.
01:35We have to learn from it,
01:38and have to put processes and policies in place so that it will not repeat itself again.
01:44Among its recommendations going forward is keeping TTPS business out of the parliament.
01:50The association again will go on record and say we need that to be revisited
01:55because it is for these reasons why we continue to have instability at the top
02:02in terms of appointment and even acting positions.
02:06But in the circumstances, Dixon says the process must go on,
02:11as the TTPS cannot be left without a commissioner.
02:14As for the association's regard of the present commissioner,
02:30I'll answer your question.
02:32The association has confidence in all our office holders,
02:35including Ms. Lula-Christopher,
02:37and the last joined constable would have entered the organization.
02:42We have confidence in all office holders.
02:44Renassa Cutting, TV6 News.
