00:20Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander and Acting Police Commissioner Junior Benjamin
00:24joined in the laughter at the use of the minister's famous line
00:28from the 2025 general election campaign by the Traffic and Highway Patrol branch
00:32in a March past competition during the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service's 2025 Sports Day
00:38at the Police Service Training Academy in St. James.
00:42Other divisions also used the voice of Minister Alexander seeing the line
00:45in an event that had a theme of the community outreach by the police.
00:50But the Garden Emergency branch chose to display that theme via the use of signs.
00:55TV6 News posed the question to Minister Alexander about that when he spoke with the media.
01:01I saw that you were a good supporter of the police sports today.
01:04Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Thank you very much and, um, you know, this is, uh, this was my pleasure
01:07to come here, having returned, left here a short while ago, and returned as a minister.
01:14And I realized that the police service stuck to its vision to treat with the community
01:20in order to remove them from this criminal element, that criminal style,
01:25and criminal type behavior, yeah, and focus on sports.
01:29Minister Alexander is a former senior superintendent of police.
01:33What is the biggest adjustment for you from moving from being a senior police officer
01:38to being a minister with responsibility for the police service?
01:42It's not really a big adjustment per se, because I continue serving the people.
01:47I left serving the people and I continue to serve the people.
01:49So it's not a big adjustment per se. I just want to see the police service win, do well, and win.
01:56And my intention is to do as much as I could to ensure victory.
02:00Have you had conversations with the police commissioner standing next to you acting
02:03in terms of what would be the key priorities you would like to see addressed for the service?
02:08Well, I have to meet my commissioner soon,
02:12and we will address that as soon as we have that communication.
02:16Minister Alexander then made reference to the UNC-led government
02:20having split the National Security Ministry into two ministries,
02:25Homeland Security and Defense.
02:27There was some delay in dividing the ministries,
02:31and as soon as that is done, then I will know exactly what are my responsibilities
02:34and I'll treat with it there and then.
02:37How soon do you anticipate this meeting?
02:39As soon as tomorrow.
02:40So tomorrow you'll meet it?
02:43You see? So all is well.
02:44TV6 News followed up on Minister Alexander's statements
02:48after he was sworn into office last week
02:51that the first order of business is to ensure the safety and protection of police officers.
02:56You spoke about issues such as bulletproof vests and so on.
02:59Are there other issues such as the weapons police use, ammunition,
03:03things of that nature to give the officers a better chance in the war and crack?
03:08Of course, but I will have my opinion.
03:10But I want it to come directly from the persons involved,
03:13which will make it much easier to treat with.
03:16Minister Alexander said he wants to ensure his ideas
03:19and that of the leadership of the police are in sync to ensure progress.
