03:13Welcome to Beyond the Tube. I'm
03:15your host Marc Bessant. It's
03:16smack in the middle of the week.
03:18It's Wednesday and it's legally
03:20speaking Wednesdays, of course,
03:22and we're joined today by
03:24Cpl. Zahir Ali at Atheniac Law
03:26in the Trinidad and Tobago
03:28Police Service. And certainly
03:30there's a lot happening
03:32overnight, and we just wanted to
03:34bring you up to date. There was
03:36a body that was found yesterday
03:38in the Cora area thrown off a
03:41cliff. And overnight, police
03:44was able to identify that
03:46person as Jaquan Allen from
03:50Piti Valley. Apparently, based
03:53on the autopsy, police said that
03:55it seemed that he was shot in
03:57the head and later thrown over
04:00that cliff. He was last seen
04:03leaving us over Piti Valley a
04:05couple weeks or two to three
04:07weeks ago at the theater. Yes,
04:09the theater in November, my
04:11producer is telling me. And he
04:13was found, his body was found,
04:15of course, yesterday morning by
04:17police officers. And
04:19personnel from the Hunter's
04:21Search and Rescue would have
04:23offered certain information and
04:25would have assisted in them
04:27locating his body. So certainly
04:29a lot to digest. Cpl. Ali,
04:31welcome. Thank you very much,
04:33Mark. Thank you for updating
04:35members of the public. Some of
04:37the more recent stories. Good
04:39evening to Trinidad and Tobago.
04:41Jackie and other members of the
04:43family, my colleagues in the
04:45audience. Mark, it's indeed a
04:47humbling experience, as always,
04:49you know, to be on this
04:51platform, very important
04:53platform. And, you know, I know
04:55that we are within the period of
04:57an international day or an
04:59international period of
05:01observance with reference to
05:03domestic violence. And a very
05:05significant topic when we are
05:07speaking about domestic violence,
05:09Mark, it is, you know, clearly
05:11established the impact that
05:13domestic violence can have on
05:15persons who are directly
05:17impacted or persons who are
05:19directly impacted but are not
05:21at the community stage or at a
05:23community level because those
05:25persons from that home who are
05:27impacted, they are also
05:29connected to different sectors
05:31of the society and persons who
05:33are affected can easily be
05:35placed in a situation where
05:37others are affected by their
05:39conduct, their behavior, and,
05:41you know, it's a very
05:43significant topic for the
05:45international community to
05:47share, not from a legal
05:49context at this point,
05:51maybe I have some things to say
05:53as we go along, but I want to
05:55say, Mark, that when we speak
05:57about domestic violence, it's
05:59always important to remind all
06:01of us that everything that is
06:03in the heavens and on the
06:05earth belongs to the almighty.
06:07And I want to repeat that.
06:09It does not belong to any
06:11human being. So I want to send
06:13this message to persons who may be impacted by
06:15domestic violence, whether it be
06:17male or female,
06:19to understand and appreciate that you do not
06:21own anything. Do not try to
06:23own or try to advance
06:25yourself where you are looking
06:27to, you know,
06:29exemplify that you have any
06:31right to any individual,
06:33and perhaps that might cause
06:35you to start to think differently in
06:37how you treat the situation. So,
06:39from a soft but a very strong approach,
06:41from a domestic violence context,
06:43understand that nothing belongs to you
06:45as a human being, so do not try
06:47to assert any right over
06:49anyone that may bring
06:51forward domestic violence.
06:53And, you know, I may even extend it, Mark,
06:55I know we have a lot of animal lovers as well,
06:57this statement is so strong from a spiritual
06:59context that it even extended
07:01to being kind not
07:03only to human beings, but even to the creation
07:05of animals and the environment
07:07to show how sacred this statement is.
07:09So, to join in the international community,
07:11I think that this is an important message,
07:13it's an important piece of advice for those who may be
07:15impacted or involved in domestic
07:17violence situation, and I just
07:19wanted to share that as we go along. I may have
07:21some other legislative
07:23recommendations to make,
07:25but thank you very much always, Mark,
07:27to share this platform with me.
07:29Well, of course, today is the 10th
07:31of 16 days of activism
07:33of gender-based
07:35violence.
07:37The TTPS is, of course, trying to
07:39educate the public
07:41across the country, you know,
07:43as we relate to gender-based violence,
07:45and, of course, not just against
07:47women, but against men, and children,
07:49and so on. So it's pretty
07:51important that we heed
07:53some of the suggestions
07:55and speak to police officers
07:57or those in authority that
07:59can assist us if we are in a particular
08:01situation that we certainly
08:03would need their assistance.
08:05Most certainly, Mark, and I don't know whether, in fact,
08:07it may be a good time to go into the legislative context,
08:09or we are going to the headlines first, and then we come back?
08:11Yes, we'll come back to that.
08:13We're going to go to our headlines now.
08:31...
08:33...
08:35...
08:37...
08:39...
08:41...
08:43...
08:45...
08:47...
08:49...
08:51...
08:53...
08:55...
08:57...
08:59...
09:01...
09:03...
09:05...
09:07...
09:09...
09:11Those were the headlines within the past
09:1324 hours. Certainly some very
09:15troubling headlines there,
09:17including murders,
09:19road traffic accidents,
09:21even attacks on
09:23students, as you would have seen
09:25at the back page here
09:27of the Express,
09:29but even more troublesome, of course,
09:31was overnight
09:33we had at least two
09:35homicides.
09:37We wanted to bring you
09:39full circle
09:41to a story
09:43on October 22nd
09:45involving contractor
09:47Premraj Hira
09:49when an attempt was made on his life
09:51in the
09:53Williamsville area.
09:55At that time,
09:57apparently the gunmen shot up
09:59the SUV that he was in
10:01together with his son
10:03and I believe daughter.
10:05They reversed the vehicle out of the yard.
10:07It was stuck in a drain,
10:09but they were able to drive off.
10:11And
10:13I just wanted to take a listen back
10:15at Mr. Hira's
10:17interview at that time
10:19with, that Express's
10:21Trevor Watson.
10:25You know, we had to give,
10:27we had to give thanks and praise because
10:29something was the tree because
10:31the amount of bullets
10:33was 12, 13.
10:35We see this morning.
10:37So we had to say thank God
10:39that, you know, we arrived this morning
10:41and
10:43because after that day
10:45our units come and know like,
10:47you know, given us the support until this morning.
10:49What to do?
10:53Well, now,
10:55right now it's a target of fight for we.
10:57It basically showing that somebody
10:59want to kill us, somebody want to kill me and my daughter.
11:03Yes, yes. Because
11:05somebody probably get paid to do a job
11:07and if the job is completed
11:09we come back again.
11:13It would seem that that was like, you know,
11:15Mr. Hira giving a premonition of
11:17perhaps his impending death.
11:19And last night in Koke
11:21village along the Naperimamea road
11:23we'll take you to
11:25some footage where a
11:27hidden gunman went onto the
11:29premises and shot and killed
11:31Mr. Hira.
11:37So this is the Naperimamea
11:39road. The house is
11:41sitting just in the
11:43background, in the foreground, sorry.
11:45Where you will see
11:47an
11:49assailant
11:51run toward the
11:53entrance of the building
11:55in a little bit.
11:57I think he was
11:59wearing a hoodie armed with a
12:01firearm.
12:03And
12:05it's a quite busy road
12:07way, corporal Ali, because a lot
12:09of vehicles are passing in.
12:11Oh, this is the
12:13assailant here. Running there
12:15you'll see
12:17he runs
12:19at what appears to be a
12:21firearm in his right hand. And then you will hear
12:35Then you will see the assailant
12:37quickly sprint
12:39out of the compound and he's
12:41gone. Of course, investigators
12:43say this happened just around
12:457 o'clock where
12:47Mr. Hira was actually in
12:49the compound, his back was turned
12:51when the gunman
12:53came onto the premises
12:55and first few shots
12:57he was shot, he ran.
12:59Of course when he ran
13:01the gunman gave pursuit
13:03and shot him several more times.
13:05Mark, what I would say
13:07you know, condolences to the family
13:09and of this particular
13:11deceased. This is the premises here? Yes.
13:13The downstairs of it, of course.
13:15Yes, how would I respond to this? I know that
13:17is subject to inquiry, but I just want to make a very
13:19important point, Mark, not only for this particular
13:21matter, but for any
13:23crime and more so where we are looking
13:25at capital offences.
13:27You see the victimology of a
13:29deceased? Doing a victimology
13:31to understand who that
13:33individual
13:35in terms of his standing,
13:37his activities and deep
13:39engagement with family and friends and community
13:41it's of immense
13:43importance and you know, sometimes when you
13:45do that victimology, you know
13:47sometimes what may be an early
13:49position taken for
13:51maybe an attempt on the individual's life,
13:53sometimes persons for many reasons
13:55may not be as frank and open
13:57as to what may be a situation
13:59that is unfolding to give law enforcement
14:01best opportunity to not only detect crime
14:03but to protect you if there's
14:05a need for protection and I think it's important
14:07for persons who have
14:09lost family members
14:11when the investigation is unfolding
14:13be honest and open with
14:15the detective to get an understanding as to
14:17the lifestyle, who is this particular individual
14:19so that you can have swift
14:21investigations, you can have swift
14:23closure and the police
14:25and generally the society will be in a better
14:27position to understand what it is exactly
14:29we are dealing with in any particular given
14:31circumstances. So I just wanted to share that in terms
14:33of the importance of the victimology
14:35Mark.
14:37I'm glad you raised that because
14:39relatives who would have spoken
14:41to me overnight until this morning
14:43would have given a fairly
14:45different story from what he made
14:47claims about it being a land dispute
14:49and they said that
14:51he was apparently mixed up with the wrong
14:53people and he was
14:55owing a huge sum of money
14:57to an individual.
14:59Well Mark again, you know
15:01you have brought very credible
15:03intelligence based on your investigative
15:05journalism and it goes
15:07smack into having
15:09an appreciation if in fact that
15:11intelligence is of an A1
15:13value and A1 meaning that
15:15you know without doubt it lends
15:17great support to the submission in terms
15:19of the importance of the victimology
15:21understanding why would someone
15:23want to inflict grievous bodily
15:25harm or in this case bring
15:27about death in an individual
15:29and you would have heard Mark what appeared to be
15:31gunshots in that video. You heard
15:33several
15:35explosions and
15:37that is an indication where
15:39when we're speaking about in crime we talk
15:41about something called a mens re, an intention to
15:43kill or intention to cause grievous bodily
15:45harm. It appeared that the shooter
15:47had a definite intention
15:49to bring about death in that situation.
15:51Yes and just to say that
15:53there seemed to be some
15:55kind of where he was asked to
15:57leave those premises sometime ago
15:59and I understand a sum of money was
16:01paid to him by family members
16:03and then he returned there
16:05after the incident in Williamsville
16:07and what we can also tell
16:09you that there is also CCC
16:11TV footage from a few days before that
16:13where
16:15you would have seen Mr. Hira in
16:17the same compound and he was
16:19allegedly holding what
16:21his police believe was a firearm
16:23behind his back and
16:25essentially what he did after
16:27was that he tried to turn the cameras and block them
16:29so that even if he was walking
16:31in the compound nobody would see he was
16:33brandishing whether it's a legal
16:35or illegal firearm. I'm not
16:37certain but that was
16:39footage that was sent to me.
16:41Again Mark, excellent. Excellent work
16:43in terms of bringing, as I said before,
16:45valuable intelligence that the police
16:47can act on in the course of the investigation
16:49to determine who is
16:51or are the perpetrators behind this
16:53criminal crime. So again, excellent work
16:55in terms of your findings and I hope that the Homicide
16:57Bureau of Investigations will
16:59look at the open source information to see
17:01exactly where the lines of inquiry
17:03should be dictated. Right, and we just
17:05quickly want to take you to El Dorado
17:07this morning. I think police
17:09discovered a body in the
17:11El Dorado area earlier today
17:13and we're not familiar
17:15or not suiting exactly
17:17as to whether it's
17:19a natural death or
17:21a suspected homicide but
17:23there was some police activity
17:25there earlier this morning
17:27and police was on the scene and of course
17:29the undertakers as well
17:31so I'm certain that probably we'll get an update
17:33overnight and later
17:35in the newscast as well.
17:37Yeah, I don't think that this particular
17:39body that was found
17:41in the El Dorado
17:43area, I don't think there's any confirmation
17:45but you're right that when there's a confirmation
17:47we will reveal but again it has
17:49regardless if it's
17:51unconfirmed at this time
17:53it still lends that
17:55focus to that particular area
17:57especially within 24 to 48
17:59hours. You've seen one in Cora and then
18:01one within that particular vicinity so again
18:03members of the public, we ask you
18:05to continue to be diligent because you are
18:07seeing bodies being
18:09found in areas that
18:11you may not have that sort
18:13of activity in terms of pedestrian
18:15or other form of traffic so it's important
18:17for us, those who may have
18:19the opportunity
18:21to be in
18:23agriculture or hiking
18:25or even just going to areas to
18:27visit, it's important for us to be
18:29exercising their due diligence
18:31to ensure that no person
18:33who is missing is within those vicinity
18:35so again a very very important mark.
18:37Alright, when we return

21:55So last night unfortunately
21:57we had another homicide
21:59this time in the Arima area
22:01a young soldier
22:03from the Trinidad and Tobago
22:05was shot and killed
22:07his name is Terence Luke
22:09seen in the photo on your screen
22:11what
22:13the police are saying is that
22:15he was sitting in his car
22:17speaking with two other men
22:19not far from his
22:21home in Nicole Street in Arima
22:23and the residents
22:25said that the two men exited
22:27the vehicle and then they apparently
22:29heard loud explosions
22:31so it's quite likely
22:33that
22:35Mr. Luke would have known
22:37the people
22:39moments before they shot him
22:41because he was sitting in the car speaking with them
22:43Well Marcus, similar, I'll just
22:45re-emphasize the importance of
22:47the victimology and in this case
22:49again, condolences to the family of this
22:51Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force
22:53officer
22:55again
22:57be losing
22:59a son of the soil
23:01is very unfortunate but again
23:03it's important to look at the victimology to get a true
23:05picture and understanding as to
23:07way of example, exactly what
23:09was the purpose of the visit to that particular area
23:11whether in fact he frequents the area
23:13and we could go on and on so it's important
23:15to know these things so that you can
23:17start to get an understanding as to whether in fact
23:19it's a situation where someone
23:21went to an area who's unknown
23:23I did say he lives close by
23:25not far from, so those people
23:27they came to talk to him
23:29Okay, well if that's the case again
23:31it's important to understand that even from our
23:33law enforcement context and defense force
23:35we also have to be very careful in terms of
23:37where we are going because of who we are
23:39and what we may be engaging so again
23:41unfortunate situation but
23:43let us dig into
23:45exactly who this individual is or
23:47are even within that particular
23:49community so that we get a
23:51clear picture as to whether in fact
23:53it's an attack on the Trinidad and Tobago
23:55Defense Force for who knows
23:57You know Mark, when persons are involved in the
23:59law enforcement you have intelligence officers
24:01you have persons playing different role
24:03and those are very important things to know
24:05as well to at least establish
24:07what may be a possible motive when we are
24:09looking at crimes of this particular nature but
24:11again condolences to the family and
24:13I urge the law enforcement fraternity
24:15notwithstanding the
24:17situation to observe the rule of
24:19law in all the circumstances
24:21It's so unfortunate because he was attached
24:23to Camp Ogden in
24:25Long Circular
24:27at Long Circular Road in St James
24:29obviously and I don't think he would
24:31have been there more than maybe
24:33two, three years
24:35so it's really sad that
24:37a young man lost his life
24:39I think he was about 23 years of age
24:41so he probably would not have
24:43been in the service for very long
24:45But still you know Mark
24:47when we are looking at it from an age context
24:49you know that right to life
24:51whether you are one year old, whether you are 90 years old
24:53you know that right to life is so significant
24:55you know it's important
24:57for human beings without
24:59life there is no existence you know so again
25:01unfortunate but I hope
25:03that the Homicide Bureau
25:05and the supporting TTPS agencies can bring
25:07swift justice to this matter as well
25:09Yes certainly and
25:11we are hopeful that you know we want to again
25:13extend our sympathies
25:15to his family and of course by
25:17extension his extended family
25:19the TTDF
25:21So there was images
25:23of a man apparently
25:25caught earlier on today
25:27we are not certain of the area or location
25:29where he would
25:31have come into contact with
25:33high tension
25:35wires
25:37and apparently
25:39it seemed that he was given
25:41medical treatment
25:43fire officials and other people came
25:45immediately onto the scene
25:47they have him there
25:49he is stabilised of course
25:51he is wearing a neck brace
25:53I am not too
25:55certain as to what
25:57might have transpired there
25:59TNT officials also
26:01there, I am seeing like a construction
26:03site
26:05like a building is going up right just behind
26:07there you see it? Yes
26:09a camera person of course moving a little
26:11bit too fast where it might have been
26:13there is a TNT workers here
26:15looking on it with concern
26:17we are not certain if he was actually
26:19a labourer on that
26:21construction site and may have come
26:23into contact with
26:25high tension wires
26:27we are hopeful that
26:29he is
26:31ok
26:33though serious
26:35probably in a very stable condition and we are hopeful that
26:37he recovers 100%
26:39Well Mark as I said because we don't
26:41have full facts in reference to this matter
26:43I want to be very careful
26:45generally speaking
26:47when you see
26:49matters like these
26:51immediately
26:53I want to just share a little bit of information
26:55to members of the public
26:57let's look at it from an occupational health and safety context
26:59where employers must ensure
27:01that employees
27:03are secured from any danger
27:05any hazard and so forth
27:07even from a state context
27:09it is important as well that the state must appreciate
27:11the duty of care that they have for persons who may be
27:13traversing a particular area
27:15just by way of example
27:17if there is
27:19electricity that is running
27:21and the wires are not
27:23properly attached
27:25to the various poles
27:27it creates a risk
27:29it is important for due diligence to be exercised
27:31at all times. I know we now came up with the
27:33hurricane season but if per chance Mark
27:35this particular matter has anything to do with
27:37it may be a good time for people like
27:39TNT and WASA to be doing
27:41a lot of canvassing to ensure
27:43that there is no risk
27:45or persons are exposed to any risk
27:47from these high tension wires
27:49and other hazards that may be
27:51around. So again unfortunate
27:53and I want to join with you
27:55and wish that individual a quick recovery
27:57in these particular circumstances.
27:59So we are going to take a short break
28:01and when we come back we will take your call. Stay with us.

42:11When I'm head prefect, each and every student will have a voice.
42:15We need to show that news quick and fully.
42:18I hate this school!
42:32Welcome back to Beyond the Tape, I'm your host Mark Bassan.
42:34Of course joined today by a tenured law corporal Zahir Ali of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
42:40It's Legally Speaking Wednesdays.
42:42And I do believe you have a caller on the line.
42:44Caller, good evening.
42:46Good afternoon, Mark.
42:51Go ahead, caller.
42:53Good afternoon, Zahir Ali.
42:55I would like to know what is a civil matter?
42:59Caller, could you say that again please? I'm not hearing you clearly.
43:02What is a civil matter?
43:05What is a civil matter, yes?
43:07Okay, what is a civil matter?
43:09What is a civil matter?
43:11Caller, to respond to you in relation to a civil matter.
43:14A civil matter is a matter that will be engaging two individuals in a private context.
43:19And it's not one that is per se engaging the state.
43:24Unless you have, for example, a judicial review that you are actually reviewing public role and functions.
43:31Which will find itself in judicial review.
43:33But strictly speaking civil, between two parties, two individuals, in a private context.
43:38Those are matters that will be grounded in a civil jurisdiction.
43:43Alright, I hope that answered your question, caller.
43:47And we've been talking about safety on the roadways, of course.
43:51And today, I believe yesterday, there was another...
43:55Oh, I think we have another caller.
43:57Caller, good evening.
44:00Hello?
44:01Good evening, caller. Go ahead, you're live and beyond the tape.
44:03Good evening, good evening to the both of you.
44:05Good evening, sir.
44:07This is going up to Corporal Ali.
44:10The amendment to the Dangerous Drug Act spoke about...
44:15A person is allowed 30 grams of cannabis in their possession.
44:20So what happens if a person is caught between, let's say, about 50 grams of marijuana?
44:26What is the procedure for the police there?
44:34Thank you very much, caller.
44:36Again, you are right in relation to the decriminalization where you are allowed to have 30 grams.
44:41But any time you're moving beyond 30 to 60, and then 60 beyond...
44:45The law has now catered for what they call a fixed penalty notice mark.
44:49Between 30 to 60, and then you have also...
44:51You can proceed in a summary jurisdiction.
44:55So the law has now given that option in relation to persons who are in possession of 30 plus grams.
45:01You have a fixed penalty notice.
45:03However, I wish to say on public platform that there were some issues in regards to the fixed penalty notice...
45:10And proceedings following that particular context.
45:13So I promise on the next occasion I will clarify whether, in fact, that process has been cleared up...
45:18In relation to the issue of fixed penalty notice for 30 plus grams.
45:22With reference to that question you asked.
45:24But again, a brilliant question.
45:26Yes, certainly.
45:27And I remember there was a video that we had some time ago.
45:30I don't know if you want to show where a guy was.
45:32Police officers had come and he claimed that he had less than the amount.
45:37Or he said that he wasn't selling or something like that.
45:40And there was some kind of legal argument there.
45:43So yes, we are getting back to the safety and the roadways.
45:47And of course, there was another accident over the last 24 hours on the Nation Roadway.
45:53I think this is near Price Mart heading, I believe, south.
45:57Earlier this morning, I believe.
45:59And we cannot impress upon citizens to be vigilant on the roadways.
46:07Because this could have been avoided. I'm almost certain.
46:10Speed is one factor.
46:12And of course, everybody seems to be in a rush at any given time.
46:16And we know that area there is pretty busy.
46:18And there is construction just near the Chagones area.
46:22And it would be very important that people take heed of these signs even before you get to that area.
46:28And slow down because there is a lot of traffic on the road now.
46:31With everybody trying to go to malls.
46:33And even during the day now, it's very traffic-y.
46:36Yeah, important, Mark.
46:37And again, I want to endorse that, especially with this particular season.
46:40Everybody is busy going somewhere.
46:42And it's important to know the road that you are driving on.
46:44And be cognizant of the road signs.
46:46And sometimes there may be construction.
46:48You may have not traversed the area for a period of time.
46:50And knowing that there are construction, there are activities.
46:52There may be loose gravel and other debris on the roadway.
46:56It may be a situation where there is probably rainfall just before you arrive at that location.
47:01So, again, under the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, please exercise due care and attention.
47:06Minimum, when you're on the nation roads.
47:08And observe strictly the nation's road traffic signs and regulations.
47:13Yeah, I mean, Sergeant Batson was on the show.
47:17We have some alarming figures there when it comes to road fatalities.
47:20And, of course, pedestrians.
47:22In this year, we had 105 comparatively to 79 or something last year.
47:28So, it's a big jump.
47:30And, of course, there's road traffic accidents, period.
47:33You know, there was a biker that died in Tobago on Sunday night.
47:37And we had a couple of fatalities last week.
47:41And some people were also injured.
47:42The children were also injured in part of that accident near Trinity.
47:46And the highway, I think, was on Saturday or Sunday morning.
47:50So, you know, you've just got to tell people to slow down.
47:53Everybody wants to be in a hurry.

48:11Whether it be to you if you are driving recklessly and dangerous.

48:17Other persons who may be using the roadway.

50:22It's Legally Speaking Wednesdays and I'm your host Mark Wesand and this is Beyond the Tape.
50:34And of course, today we are with Corporal Zahir Ali Atiniatlo with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
50:40And we just want to reiterate the 16 days of activism, of course, that is happening now and we're in day 10.
50:49Well, Mark, thank you very much for the opportunity again to make some points and to endorse points that we made earlier.
50:56This 16 days, Mark, we spoke about the impact that domestic violence can have not only on an individual household, one individual, but the society at large.
51:05And again, that will justify the public's interest in looking at this matter.
51:09And I want to emphasize that from a legislative context, it's important for us to look at our Domestic Violence Act in its entirety.
51:17And, you know, I want to, you know, make a strong call.
51:20I know a lot of persons have looked at this issue of the protection order that, you know, as a means of protecting victims.
51:26But, you know, as it stands, there's a clear system, if I should use that, with reference to how the police, if there's a breach of the protection order on a first count, on a second count, on a third count.
51:35But, Mark, I want to make the point that all it needs is one breach of a protection order that could lead to death.
51:41So, it's important for us to look at that legislation to create a very strong deterrent that on a breach of a protection order, it should be so severe that a person will be very hesitant to even engage in a breach of the protection order.
51:54So, from a legislative context, I would like us to visit that breach of a protection order and the penalties that are associated with it.
52:01And also look at, you know, probably extending where, in the particular legislation, the police already have a power to enter premises without a warrant.
52:11And I think that that is an area that we need to create more awareness to members of the public and to also even give members of the public the power, in law, statutory, to be able to go in and deal with the situation as well.
52:22We know that we may have a civilian arrest if there's a criminal offense, but it's important to put it in statute so that we have a society playing a role with reference to this issue of domestic violence to protect victims.
52:32And last but not least, when a protection order is issued as well, Mark, it's important for us to give notice to members of the public on a wider scale so that you not only have oath officers policing a protection order,
52:43but a wider community being aware that there's a protection order from Mr. Basant and he should not be at TV6.
52:49Anybody seeing him there can alert the police so that you have a society policing this very serious issue.
52:54So, that's from a legislative context. And again, I want to remind persons who may be inclined to engage in domestic violence, Mark, nothing on earth or in the heavens belong to any of us.
53:06Nothing.
53:07So, do not be asserting or trying to claim a right on an individual to treat that individual as a piece of commodity that you want to be in a position to do anything with that individual.
53:21So, persons who may be inclined, I ask you to desist and let us be kind and compassionate to each other as we live because there will come a day that we all will have to return.
53:30So, Mark, again, it's always a pleasure. Thank you very much. And I hope that, you know, thanks to the callers for your questions and your submissions this afternoon.
53:39Most definitely. And I just want to let you guys know if you have any videos or photos that you would like highlighted on Beyond the Tape, you can send it to beyondthetape1 at gmail.com.
53:52That's beyondthetape1 at gmail.com. And we definitely would want to get some context or perspective so you can put some information as well there for us so that we'll be able to kind of sift through the information and know what's what.
54:07All right. And certainly we want to thank you again, Corporal Ali, for your insight. And of course, as we continue to observe these 16 years of activism of gender-based violence, we want to again educate the public, of course.
54:22And if you have an issue or you have a problem of some nature, do not hesitate to speak to a police officer or someone in authority if you need assistance. No matter how small you might think that problem is, it might escalate. So before it escalates or it gets a situation where it gets out of hand, we want to implore you to reach out to someone and get that assistance. Yes?
54:49Very well said, Mark. And I fully endorse that position.
54:52Yes. So we are hopeful that you all would observe, you know, take the necessary steps if you feel that you are a victim of some type of violence. No doubt.
55:04OK. So on that note, I want to remind you, repeat tonight at 11. We run tomorrow, not at 11 o'clock, but rather at 2 p.m. And guess what? The TV6 News is up next. So stay right here.
55:34.
