00:00The 20th Annual Health, Safety, Security and Environment or HSSE Conference of the American
00:06Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port of Spain
00:11was officially opened by Acting Prisons Commissioner Carlos Giraspi.
00:16It was a moment that seemed to symbolize a message from the President of AmCham TNT,
00:21Stuart Franco.
00:22Our advancements in safety will be undermined if crime continues to go unchecked, as it
00:30affects every single one of us, regardless of our race, gender or class.
00:37AmCham TNT reiterates the urgent need for collaboration between the government, law
00:43enforcement, the business community and other communities to combat crime effectively.
00:50And it seems that message was heard loud and clear by the Acting Prisons Commissioner.
00:55I want to say that the prison service is open for business.
00:58Under our shared responsibility model of corrections, we recognize that just as it takes a village
01:05to raise a child, it takes a community to rehabilitate an offender.
01:11The top prisons officer highlighted technology that is of very serious concern to the prison
01:16service.
01:17What about drones flying and bringing prohibited and unauthorized items into the prison?
01:24When we are engaging security solutions, is that something the business community could
01:30engage in, not just at the level of selling the prison service a product, but to be concerned
01:35of the danger that any item that is brought into the prison through the use of those drones
01:41could pretend for public safety, that of yourselves, your families, your employees
01:47and the communities?
01:48The Acting Prisons Commissioner also spoke about what he called customer care at the
01:52nation's prisons.
01:54Is it possible, we have a prison training college, we have officers, is it possible
02:01for members of the business community, the AmCham business community, to provide facilitators
02:08to come in and to do the training with our officers to improve the quality of public
02:13service by our officers to the public?
02:17Is that a deeper collaboration that we can engage?
02:21AmCham TNT Chief Executive Officer Nira Tawari said he was authorized by the Chamber's President
02:27to state if the Acting Prisons Commissioner details what is needed, quote, in terms of
02:32support for training, we will work with our members to provide that in the academy, end
02:38quote.
