00:00Police Commissioner Alistair Guevara is sending the following message to those involved in a life of crime.
00:07Let this serve as a stark reminder.
00:11Trinidad and Tobago is no longer safe even for criminal enterprise.
00:18The risks are high, the consequences are grave, and the TTPS will not relent in its mission to dismantle criminal networks and restore public safety.
00:33Accordingly, the TopCorp is sharing the following advice.
00:37Put down your weapons.
00:39Turn your life around.
00:41And call the nearest police station or dial 999 or 555 anonymously and tell us where to get them guns.
00:50It will be better for you.
00:53If you have not received the message before, or as the old people would say, if stick breaking your ears, let me repeat it again.
01:03A life of crime is now a high-risk vocation in this country.
01:09So hand in your illegal guns and become productive members of society.
01:16The Commissioner's chilling warning comes amid criticism of his decision to sport a Punisher logo, often associated with vigilante justice.
01:26The warning also comes in the midst of an extended state of emergency, which grants law enforcement wider powers under the Emergency Powers Regulations.
01:34Back in July, the police complaints authority raised concern over an increase in police-involved killings,
01:42after five people were killed by police in the first five days of the SOE.
01:47On August 5th, PCA Director David West told TV6 News 38 police-involved shootings had claimed a total of 46 lives at that time.
01:57The following day, three men were killed by police in two separate incidents.
02:02That brings the number of fatalities arising from police shootings to 49 for the year thus far.
02:10Meantime, Legal Affairs Minister Saddam Hussein is hailing the successes of law enforcement since the start of the SOE.
02:17There was a total of 2,126 operations.
02:23There were 898 targets or priority offenders.
02:2913,643 searches were conducted with respect to vehicles and premises.
02:37936 persons were arrested.
02:40We had 76 firearms found or seized of various assortments, revolvers, pistols, shotguns, rifles, and air rifles.
02:55There was a total number of 1,027 ammunitions found and seized, again, of various assortments.
03:04So, so far, we have also seen, based on the announcement by the Commission of Police also,
03:11that there has been a 34% drop in the murder rate for the corresponding period of the year 2024.
03:18So, the state of emergency so far has shown incredible success.
03:24Renasa Cutting, TV6 News.
