00:00You like excitement? Did you say that you like excitement?
00:04I do like excitement. And you know what that makes me think of, don't you?
00:08One man.
00:09Grandy's grades! Let's go!
00:11Always known as a very exciting...
00:13How did the 49ers grade out this week?
00:15Did they pass? Did they fail?
00:18Let's find out. It's time for Grandy's Grades.
00:24Not only exciting, but at times, a little too vocal.
00:29But, you know, it's radio, so we talk.
00:32But anyway, go ahead, Mark. Hi.
00:33Hey, what's up? If you were listening earlier, you already know my grade for quarterbacks.
00:37It's Grandy's Grades. We'll go through seven different spots.
00:40We'll start with quarterback, as always, Brock Purdy.
00:43For his performance yesterday in Seattle, I gave him a flat A.
00:47I love it, and I'm happy that you've come to your senses, Grandy.
00:52And I only say that because you initially had said A-, but in fact, it was an A all along.
00:56And I think when you watch a football game and you really watch it,
01:01you don't just see what a quarterback does well and what a quarterback does poorly,
01:06but watch what he does mediocre in a play that's not there.
01:11Does he do the right thing and get out of it or scramble or throw it away
01:15or make the easy throw and maybe the miraculous throw could be made, but he doesn't?
01:21I thought last night was a great example of a quarterback doing what needed to be done
01:25to win a football game. It was incredible.
01:28This is what I'll say about the two of you and your A grade for Brock Purdy.
01:33Are the two of you in love with Brock Purdy?
01:37Do you call him Brocky-poo? Do you have posters on your wall?
01:43Is that what I'm listening to right now?
01:46Do you want Brocky-poo to come over to your house?
01:51Is that what I'm hearing right now?
01:53My gosh.
01:55Mark, you out here sounding like a hater, my brother.
01:57I mean, good Lord, with the two of you and your constant Purdy love,
02:01I know for one, I'm sick of it.
02:03I've actually paid $50 on Cameo to have Brock wish me a happy Indigenous People's Day on Monday.
02:11Really?
02:12So there's that.
02:13Major bad.
02:15Major.
02:16Yeah, I give him an A- because he missed a few throws.
02:20Hater.
02:21Yeah, I mean, I'm sick of all this Purdy this and Purdy that and Purdy so Purdy
02:26and all this crap that always happens on 95.7 The Game.
02:29Yeah.
02:30No, it's an A-. He missed a few throws, and I hold him to that standard
02:33because I think he's that good.
02:35But yeah, really good game.
02:36Really, really good, solid road, nighttime division situation for Brock Purdy.
02:42He is the highest-rated quarterback on pro-football-focused PFF.com,
02:47although last night was his third-highest grade of his six games.
02:51They gave him a 76.5.
02:53What was his highest?
02:5491.1 against the Rams.
02:56Rams.
02:57I'm telling you, that was the game that I was most impressed with Purdy this year
03:00was the Ram game.
03:01Anyway.
03:02Well, we all agree he had a very nice night in Seattle.
03:04He did, but you guys.
03:05You and I agree.
03:06I mean, you guys were just lathering it on like usual.
03:08Anyway, go ahead.
03:09Up next, skill positions, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends.
03:13I gave them a grade A-.
03:15George Kittle was awesome in this one.
03:17A couple of touchdowns.
03:18Debo Samuel wasn't heavily involved, but when he was involved, he was good.
03:22Of course, he had the 76-yard touchdown catch and run, which was an awesome play.
03:26Iyuk was kind of nowhere to be found throughout this one,
03:29but he also had three running backs who ran the ball well.
03:32Garendo, Mason, and Patrick Taylor kind of quietly did a good job in the second half,
03:36so an A- skill position group for me.
03:38See, I'm going to actually give it an A because you remember the sort of debate
03:42we got into week one when it's like, where's the demerit?
03:45I never saw a drop ball.
03:47I saw Debo Samuel turn what could have been a disaster of a throw from Brock Purdy
03:52into a catch on the very opening series on third and one.
03:56You saw the running back room go through total adversity,
04:00and you're getting RB4 and RB5 in there, closing out games.
04:06George Kittle, obviously, an A-plus kind of a performance.
04:10I just thought the skill position players were clean.
04:15I didn't see them make any glaring mistakes the entire night.
04:18You're right, and I'm thinking about it now because I wrote down my grades
04:22after I watched it earlier, and I also wrote down A-,
04:26but as you were saying A-, Grandy, and you were explaining your A,
04:30I flipped through my notes to try to find a demerit or a play,
04:35and I'm having a hard time finding one, so I feel like my A- might be misguided.
04:39The only demerit you could think of is if you're mad at Eric Saubert
04:44for basically committing a motion penalty deep in their own zone.
04:49If you want to use that for an A-, I don't really think much of Eric Saubert
04:53when I'm making my grades.
04:55Well, there was the one Jawan Jennings catch that we thought was a catch
04:59that turned out to be a drop, which would have made it, instead of third and 17,
05:03would have made it third and 15.
05:05Remember, he kind of caught it, he trapped it, and then they looked at it
05:09and they said, no, you didn't catch it, and so that two-yard gain was negated.
05:13Whatever. I think I'm out of line with the A-.
05:16A- for me because Aiyuk, show up, buddy.
05:20He's got to get the ball thrown to him, kid.
05:23What were the targets?
05:24Okay, Greg Cosell.
05:26Yeah, exactly. Was he open? Was he open or was he not open?
05:30He had four targets.
05:31He had just two catches, right?
05:33Yeah.
05:34And one of them I wrote down in my notes, he got held on that third play in the second half
05:38where it was targeted to him, it was incomplete, and the guy was basically,
05:43he held him so long he should have given him a corsage.
05:46We also did not bring up the name Kyle Juszczak, and I thought he was
05:49Touchdown as well, yeah.
05:50Yeah, not just, I mean, phenomenal game for him,
05:53also blocking and leading the way for the runners.
05:56He was great.
05:57All right, up next we've got the offensive line.
05:59I thought this was maybe their best game of the season
06:02and not the best pass rush they're going up against,
06:05especially when you consider the Seahawks' injuries.
06:07I thought four out of the five players that are really,
06:10I guess really maybe five out of the six had a good night
06:12because there were a couple that were in and out, including.
06:14This was awesome.
06:15I gave the offensive line group an A- for their performance overall.
06:18I mean, if you're going to name one of the five players as being a mess,
06:21and he did commit a very, very big penalty in the game,
06:25I'm sure.
06:26I love, again, the handling of adversity with Banks going in and out.
06:30You're running the ball with multiple people.
06:32It's a very, very good performance,
06:35but something in the A-bracket is a little bit too hot for me.
06:39I lean more toward B-plus.
06:41Yeah, it's a B-plus for me, and the one penalty that we're all talking about,
06:45Jake Brendel, went from second and eight to second and 18,
06:49and it prompted a punt.
06:51So those are the kinds of penalties that you can have.
06:54A couple of false starts in there as well from the offensive line.
06:57Very good, but not A-level.
06:59It's a B-plus.

07:17You are also listening to Grandy's Grades.
07:21All right, coming up next, after the offensive line,
07:24we go over to the defensive side of the football,
07:26and that is the front seven.
07:28This obviously buoyed by Nick Bosa, who was awesome in this game.
07:32Front seven is the D-linemen and the linebackers.
07:34Fred Warner was also very good as well.
07:36You guys talked about that peanut punch where he took away a first down
07:40that was already gained.
07:41An incredible play there.
07:43Bosa was incredible.
07:44Those two carry this grade of an A-minus for me from the front seven.
07:49Yeah.
07:50I dig it.
07:51Yeah, I think I can carry that.
07:54Fred was fantastic.
07:55Nick was dominant.
07:57I felt like the pass rush, in one way or another,
07:59was effective without sacks the entire night.
08:03Some of those interceptions were forced by the defensive line,
08:07which I think is the concept of the 49ers' defense.
08:11And even everybody's favorite whipping boy, Devondre Campbell,
08:14no major mistakes, three solo tackles in the game.
08:18Yeah, A-minus feels about right to me.
08:20I had the same, yeah, A-minus.
08:22And I believe the only sack they got was on the final drive of the game,
08:27if I'm not mistaken.
08:28And it was Sam O.
08:29Yeah, Sam O had one, and Givens had a little bit,
08:32but it was really the Bosa show for the most part.
08:35Fred Warner playing a little bit in a hampered fashion,
08:38and you're right about Devondre.
08:40We didn't mention him at all.
08:42He hasn't shown up at all in my notes.
08:44All in all, very good, but an A-minus because I would have liked to see them
08:48get their hands on Geno.
08:50And how many times did Nick Bosa have him in his grasp?
08:54At least five.
08:55Right.
08:56Remember that hand thing where you do this hand exercise thing?
09:00Geno's a big man.
09:01He's a big man.
09:03He moves pretty well.
09:04So was Nick.
09:05And he's a veteran who I think got rid of the ball at the right time.
09:07But again, that Mustafa interception was caused by Nick.
09:10So you can get a sack or a pick.
09:12Which one's more exciting to you?
09:14I'll take the pick.
09:15So I hear what you're saying, though, for sure.
09:17There was one play in the second half where I think this is the one you're
09:19referencing, Dibs, where Bosa actually stripped the ball.
09:22Yes.
09:23Geno lost it for a second, then kind of pinned it to his hip,
09:26and it seemed like Bosa was so set on trying to get the ball that he kind of
09:29failed to get the sack, and he ended up missing both because Geno recovered.
09:32But all in all, an awesome day for Nick Bosa and Fred Warner and company.
09:36On to the secondary.
09:37I thought this was the best group of the day for the 49ers.
09:41And when you consider that the Mooney Ward injury, you're already down
09:44Hufanga as well.
09:45You had a couple of interceptions from rookie defensive backs after you had
09:49none from any defensive backs through five weeks.
09:52The secondary gets an A from me for last night.
09:55I don't know how you can't just because of the fact, were they perfect?
09:59No.
10:00But you can't ask for that, especially with the adversity you face.
10:04Not only does Charverius Ward not play, you don't even know that he's not
10:07going to play until an hour before the game.
10:09And to have rookies come in and affect the game the way they did between Green
10:14and Mustafa, that has got to get an A.
10:17And oh, by the way, Lenore, chef's kiss yet again.
10:21Yes, and I also give him an A, and I'm looking through and trying to find
10:25demerits, and I see Lockett in a 37-yard catch with Yadiman coverage,
10:30the Niners rush five.
10:31They picked it up.
10:32And there were a couple of the past plays that were just tip of the cap to the
10:36offense.
10:37The offense is going to make some plays, and I'm hard-pressed to remember any
10:42pass interference.
10:43There might have been one P.I.
10:44Penalty on the 49ers, if that.
10:47But in general, not only were they clean, but they actually took the ball away
10:51from the other team for the first time, twice from rookies.
10:55For me, that's a solid A grade.
10:57Yeah, I'm with you guys.
10:58So special teams, this is where we get the first non-passing grade of the day
11:04for the 49ers.
11:06Special teams gets a D.
11:07I know Kyle Shanahan was talking about how, oh, well, special teams made some
11:10plays for us and stuff.
11:12They also gave up the kickoff return for a touchdown.
11:14That immediately changed the tide in this game.
11:16You were about to close the door on the Seahawks, up 23-3.
11:20LaVisca Chennault, 97-yard kickoff return right after that.
11:24They get a stop.
11:25They score again.
11:26Suddenly it's a one-possession game, and it all happened because of what
11:28happened on special teams.
11:29So a D, special teams for me.
11:31I'm going to sound like Dibbs here for a second and then let him answer first,
11:35but a D is a passing grade.
11:37Yep.
11:38You get your credit.
11:39Trust me.
11:40On you go to the next year.
11:41My motto was Ds get degrees going through college.
11:45D stands for done.
11:47Well, it turns out you need to get more Cs than Ds because if you're sub 2.0,
11:51you actually get in some academic trouble.
11:54I'm going to push back on this.
11:55I gave them a C-plus, and the reason is, yes,
11:58the kickoff return is completely unacceptable,
12:01but when they got into a tight spot in a six-point game,
12:05you had the punt that Seattle touched and you recovered,
12:09and it was a blown call by the officials.
12:11You didn't get it.
12:12Fine.
12:13The next time you had the ball and you punted,
12:15Wyschnowski put it from there.
12:18They were on Seattle's 40, and he did one of those little nine-iron,
12:22backed it up to the three-yard line.
12:24Got to back that thing up.
12:25Look at that punt once you back that thing up.
12:27That was the punt that ultimately led to the green interception,
12:32and I also thought that they had a couple of impressive kick returns.
12:36Debo had a couple where he took it from the two-yard line,
12:40and you also have to tip the cap to the kicker who just came off the street
12:44and nailed three field goals.
12:46It was a mixed bag, but I gave him a C-plus.
12:49They also forced a fumble on a Seattle kickoff.
12:51That's a great point.
12:52Yeah, so I actually like C, C-minus.
12:56I'm kind of in between you two guys because, to Dib's point,
13:00there's really only two things the entire night in special teams
13:03that I thought stunk, and then a lot of the rest of what you saw was great.
13:08From a kicker off the street going perfect,
13:10it was definitely Wyschnowski's best night.
13:13They did force one turnover, and let's be real, they actually got two.
13:17Thank you very much camera angles not being available.
13:21So, I thought they were very good, except for two plays.
13:25The reason it goes all the way down to C-minus is one of those two plays
13:29was potentially a backbreaker.
13:31I mean, the worst kind of play at the worst moment
13:34in the Viska-Chenault kickoff return.
13:37Here's the other one that you left out,
13:39and I am going to continue to put this on the special teams coaches
13:43until they freaking have the conversation they need to have.
13:47Hey, kickers, stop throwing your body at the ball carrier.
13:53You're allowed to be in the back as a fail-safe
13:57to try to force someone out of bounds or slow them down
14:01by diving at their ankles or something like that, try an arm tackle,
14:05and if you don't get it, you don't get it.
14:07But two weeks, two kickers hurt, stop being overly aggressive.
14:12I know that's what men do.
14:15Stop, stop, you're a kicker, you're a kicker.
14:19Like, literally, can we look up, what is the height and weight of Matthew Wright?
14:24I think he's a 6'4", 265, I believe.
14:27Are you ready for this? I'm looking at it right now.
14:295'10", 190 would be my guess.
14:32Okay, you say 5'10", 190.
14:34Randy, what's your Matthew Wright size, height, and weight guess?
14:37Oh, I just looked it up, sorry.
14:39Are you ready for this, Cat?
14:41Please.
14:43Dog is 5'11", 174.
14:48Man, no abundant life for him.
14:50174, and you're out there throwing your body
14:56at dudes whose thighs weigh that much.
15:00Stop, just stop.
15:04Thank you for listening to my TED Talk.
15:07You're welcome.
15:09He kind of jumped the whole bit
15:11because that might come up in the next category for some,
15:14but I do want to point out one more special teams play.
15:18The first punt from Seattle where Cowen gets it after a 60-yard punt
15:23and he's got room to run and he just falls down.
15:25He slipped twice.
15:26He stumbled.
15:27He could not keep his feet all night long.
15:30I'll take a stumble over a fumble, but I hear you.
15:32That's a four.
15:34And you're not wrong.
15:36It is coaching, and coaching for me gets a B+.
15:39I was frustrated for much of the first half.
15:41I thought Kyle Shanahan was relatively vanilla.
15:44He changed it up a little bit more in the second half,
15:46and then a lot of the special teams blunders
15:48that you guys are talking about, that also falls on coaching for me.
15:51So that's why they're not getting an A, a B+, for me in coaching.
15:54That feels about right.
15:56That feels about right.
15:57I mean, look, it's hard when you're the coaches to get an A
16:01because the coaches are in charge of everyone.
16:05And not everyone's going to have a perfect night.
16:08So I think it's fair to give them a B+.
16:11I also think that's a pretty good grade for a coaching staff as a whole.
16:15There's never been a football game where people love every play
16:20that Kyle Shanahan called, but when you score 36 points,
16:23you score 36 points.
16:25That's an A+, sort of an output for an offense.
16:28So with all things considered, yeah, B+, sounds about right.
16:32I will echo your TED talk without repeating that 90 seconds.
16:36That to me is coaching when your kickers repeatedly try to tackle people.
16:40And I mentioned it earlier in the show,
16:42going empty formation in the red zone when you're running back
16:45is being very successful to me is not the proper approach.
16:49Those are the only demerits.
16:51But you're right, Mark.
16:52When you win a game with 36 points and you win it by double digits,
16:55tough to go lower than a B+.
