00:00I would love I would love that for Tony and he's got a very very fine line to walk here
00:06and here's
00:07what I mean by that I want Tony to to keep his authenticity I love the fact that I'm I'm
00:15speaking
00:16from me to you all right now this is I we are lucky enough to have been in the room
00:21with him
00:22we have had him on the show we have been to multiple press conferences I'm telling you that
00:26when you ask this man a question he looks you in the eye and actually thinks about how he wants
00:33to
00:33answer it that is not the norm and I don't even just mean that in big time sports and press
00:38conferences I mean that in life like how many people are like listening to you and then look
00:44you in the eye and go okay how do I want to how do I want to give a nice
00:50detailed thoughtful response
00:51to that that's not the way the majority of the world works right now and I early on liking it
00:58early I appreciate that part of Tony Vitello but what I want for him also is to alongside that fully
01:10have the confidence you're in the right spot you don't you don't need to impress everybody every
01:17minute of every day in other words and I've learned this over and over in life it doesn't
01:23work when you cruise around trying to prove yourself constantly yeah you don't have to it's
01:28just like dude you're here you have the gig you're here you're three games in they believed in you
01:33enough to give you three million a year for what three or four seasons I'm not sure the length of
01:37the
01:37deal but they believe in you you got the gig so not that you have to act like you've been
01:42here before
01:43because you haven't but don't act like you haven't been here before even though you haven't
01:47just realize that you don't have to like ride the emotions of every single game and I think that's
01:53what you've been pointing out and that's going to be the hardest thing for him because he is authentic
01:57and he is a guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve and he really wants to do well but
02:02three games in it couldn't be much more of a disaster but it doesn't matter that's three
02:07games in you can go to San Diego and sweep the pods or you could go and get swept or
02:13somewhere
02:13in between and you'll have 156 more of these to go well you know what the other thing is too
02:18baseball is inexplicable it just is it doesn't make any sense that's why you can win the world
02:25series and people look at you and go well you're not the best team I mean let's think about it
02:31let's
02:31go back to uh let's go back to 2014 let's go back to last year I pointed this out about
02:36Detroit
02:37San Francisco Giants win over the Kansas City Royals um if I'm uh if my memory is serving me
02:44correctly the Giants win game seven three to two okay let's think about just a few of the things
02:50that happened in that game okay there's the Joe Panic Eric Hosmer double play that was not called a
02:56double play that was then reviewed that was a double play and I'm talking like by a cleat and if
03:02you want
03:02to go back to what the actual game winning run was it happened very early in the game
03:06second third inning I think third inning maybe Michael Morse probably exit velo of 12
03:13hit a ball off of his fists and it just dying quail goes out over the first and second baseman's
03:19head
03:20into short right field and gives the Giants uh the advantage and they're up three to two and then as
03:27they get to the fourth or fifth inning uh they pull their horse out of the bullpen who was supposedly
03:34not necessarily ready to pitch but if he was ready to pitch it was just gonna be real quick uh
03:40hey
03:40Madison go give us a few give us what you got and Madison never left all of those things happen
03:47and you
03:47win the World Series you win the World Series um that's that's baseball so um you're right they could go
03:56on a five game win streak right now and I wouldn't even blink because it's not usually even about who's
04:02the best team you don't you don't dominate in that sort of a way and I wonder I don't know
04:09this but I
04:10wonder if that's a part of an adjustment for Tony that even he hasn't really thought of yet he's used
04:18to putting that costume on and then you win usually yeah I ran down those records those records are like
04:26we don't ever lose and if we do we're gonna beat you two out of the three or three out
04:30of the four
04:30you're not taking a series from us when we go 60 and 10 and we win the natty well and
04:35then if you do
04:36lose all right you head to your office and who's in there with you well we got vols.com
04:43right secrs.com you know what I mean win vols.com and uh I don't know even a newspaper out
04:55there or
04:55something whatever you got a small group of people who are in your office every day and we're talking
05:02out the specific plays that led to us losing to most likely a very inferior opponent today
05:10that's so different now that's so different like the next game that he coached Netflix was here
05:18and Aaron Judge was here and and Logan Webb went out and they put up a crooked one on him
05:26in the
05:26second inning you brought this up earlier I think it's a good point for Giants fans to remember
05:30they gave up eight runs outside of that one inning for the whole weekend right like they pitched pretty
05:36well the bullpen was really solid really good and it was that one inning and then you couldn't hit and
05:41it's interesting too the part that you're laying out with the reporters it's also where you go out
05:46back in the locker room after you lose to LSU probably 13 to 11 because that's college baseball and
05:52you're talking to you know little Drew Gilbert who's 19 and Tidwell who's 20 and all the fellas the
05:58oldest guy in the room outside of your fellow coaches might be 23 or 24 with the COVID you get
06:04that extra
06:04year you get the point now you lose these games and you go in the locker room and Chappie's 34
06:1035 and
06:11Robbie Ray's got four kids and a bunch of problems and you're dealing with grown men who are multi
06:16multi-millionaires you're not dealing with youngsters who might be on their phone and worried about their
06:21chemistry test it's a whole different experience and you know he's going to adjust I'm sure he already
06:26has but you're dealing with grown men who are rich generationally rich doesn't mean they don't care
06:34but they definitely see things differently when you're Matt Chapman and you've played in
06:38what 1200 baseball games you're going to understand a little bit more about the ebbs and the flows
06:44well it's funny you bring up Drew Gilbert he's probably a great snapshot of this entire thing and
06:49we got it before Vitella was even hired Drew Gilbert is not that far removed from being in a
06:54Tennessee dugout and and what is Drew Gilbert doing a dugout he bites people I mean he does the
06:59centipede when someone else homers like it's just that's the energy from which Tony comes and and
07:07then and now now you're here and so this idea of I've got to fire you up for every game
07:13and then I've
07:14got to explain it away every time you lose is something that I think he's gonna have to he's
07:19gonna have to shake that and I think he actually will very very quickly that's the other thing these
07:25messages come at you real fast you got three losses to the Yankees and now you've got an entire
07:32major market thinking about it talking about it reacting to it and so I think he'll he'll grow out
07:40of this real quick but it's funny in in his commentary over the weekend about it's my job to go
07:48calm them
07:48down that was the first thought that came to my mind is no dude you need to calm yourself down
07:55right
07:55they're fine they're fine the Giants are fine they've been through this like all had three game
08:02losing streaks before right even Jung-Hoo Lee who's now in year three and year one was beset by that
08:07terrible injury and he missed the majority of it he was here all last year and he played pro ball
08:12overseas and so he's been through all this before and I do think that the schedule lines up to really
08:19help him to get that adjustment because they played 10 games in 10 days starting tonight it's no off day
08:25it's 10 straight so I love that well I love that for him I love that for him and for
08:30us because
08:30you know now you get in the routine of there's a day there's a game the whole thing but for
08:35Tony
08:35you're not going to have the opportunity to dwell on anything victory or defeat it's going to be
08:40what's up next and you know three in San Diego you come home for seven then you go to Baltimore
08:45you
08:45start a road trip and it's going to start to be like you know boom boom boom you're going to
08:49start
08:49to rip through the season you know my man needs he just needs a crooked number it's literally all
08:55he needs he needs somebody to hit the damn western metal supply building with two runners on tonight
09:03just relax everything just calm it down you're good they're fine you know that's the other thing
09:10you look at it you go oh the Giants like I heard this a thousand times um you know social
09:16media blah
09:17blah blah good lord that lineup's terrible all right go go hitter by hitter tell me which one
09:23who's the the non-accomplished major league hitter on their roster oh Patrick Bailey well fine but
09:30that's a catcher who like all the catchers hit 211 do you know what I mean like he's he's done
09:35this
09:35for three years now Patrick Bailey's not like a he's gonna hit by 210 yeah but he's the best defensive
09:42catcher in ball and he's going nowhere so he's established yeah all right who else well I'm just
09:47thinking about like who you're really looking to to carry the thing and it's Adamas it's Chapman
09:52and it's Devers sure and so three games in none of them have done really anything I think Chappie
09:59has the only RBI so you look at what they've done over their career uh 10 years or more for
10:04almost all
10:05of them and you realize this is not who they're going to be all year so that's where for me
10:09the
10:09patience comes in well I was like I guess the point I was trying to make is go around go
10:15around the diamond
10:17they're all accomplished big leaguers every single one of them every single one of them
10:22none of them are perfect some of them might even just be average but we know exactly who these guys
10:29are and and and they all have a place the Giants aren't they're not forcing any square pegs into
10:36round holes nobody gave a position to a guy who traditionally sucks in the big leagues none of
10:42that Jung-Hoo Lee is probably the biggest question mark out there as far as do I know who you
10:48are in
10:49the bigs we're still kind of trying to figure that out Ramos is early but he's already made an all
10:55-star
10:56team Bader's a phenomenal defensive center fielder with some speed some swag he's an okay hitter and and
11:05that's what you'll get Casey Schmidt would be the only one I would say where but I don't need I
11:09don't
11:09think Casey is long for the starting lineup probably not Casey's out there because Devers is a little
11:15dinged and they don't like Girard at first base defensively that's why Casey's out there if
11:22Devers was playing first Encarnacion would be DHing I am wildly confident in that and I also think
11:29before this calendar hits May Bryce Eldridge will be on the team it's my guess so like that like
11:37that's where Casey's headed Casey is not headed for everyday first base you're right he's headed
11:42more for the Christian costs like utility kind of role and so that's going to happen sooner rather
11:47than later if they will face a lefty soon maybe that would be Girard who gets to actually be in
11:52the lineup and maybe actually have an at-bat because so far you're starting nine have gotten all the
11:58at-bats and none of them have done much through three games but I don't even look at the seven
12:03eight
12:03nine hitters when I think about you know this offense it's got to be Adamas Devers and Chapman
12:08and to a lesser extent you know Ramos and then you know Jung-Hoo Lee and on the way down
12:14the line
12:14but like with any team we could look at the Warriors and we could say man they really aren't performing
12:20well with with pods and poor Zingas well Jimmy and Steph are going to be the guys who have to
12:25carry
12:25you but they're not out there so you can't have the same expectation for the Giants you have your guys
12:30out there Devers I know is a little dinged up but he can still hit ultimately you're going to rise
12:36and fall with your key hitters and those are the three guys sure sure absolutely um and then I yeah
12:42I think that uh boy if I were a member of this pitching staff I would be bummed with how
12:49this all
12:49sounds coming out of our opening weekend against the Bronx Bombers it's pretty good lineup it's got a lot
12:56of stuff coming at you and uh again Logan Webb gave up a crooked second inning and then outside of
13:04that
13:04you got 26 other innings and they gave up a total of eight runs oh by the way it did
13:10some digging and
13:11this is my I Grandy you might have been on this already um but I I really wanted to make
13:16sure whenever
13:17there's somebody new this has kind of been uh a thing that I have I really want to chase down
13:23exactly
13:24how we pronounce your name so that we get this right remember when we did this with Mauricio
13:30Dubon yep for a long time I want to get it right so the starting pitcher on Saturday is Tyler
13:36Malley
13:37it rhymes with rally not Molly not Maylee Malley rhyme that's how you can remember it it rhymes with
13:48rally Tyler Malley gotta be a better rhyme because rally would mean the other team is like
13:54batting around against Malley well you could also rally around him I guess and it could be rhymes
14:00with Sally it could be rhymes with Bally great casino and hotel in Vegas I love Bally's yep
14:06John Sally John Sally Tyler Malley that's right that's how you can remember all right yeah all right
14:13sounds good sounds good and we can come on John Sally thank you no Tyler Malley um John Sally
14:20no Malley John all right we got it cemented now yeah okay we all got it Tyler Malley you got
14:29it there
14:30there you go all right let's do it again oh okay
14:33okay
14:33okay
