00:00so check this out we've all experienced replay in so many sports and have you noticed i i don't even
00:09get whether or not there's a a form way of doing this it feels like when there's a question mark
00:17let's say it's even just like guys trying to steal second they throw down there um calls them out and
00:24now we're going to review it feels like some ballparks show you the clip if i'm talking about
00:30if you're there right not on tv feels like some ballparks show you the clip and some don't and
00:36you might be seated seated in a spot where you could see the board and maybe you can't see the
00:39board great or whatever um but even with replay you still kind of have to just take somebody's word
00:46for it could be secaulcus in the nba yeah nfl we're all going to go into a little booth put
00:53a hood on
00:54and check it out come back out after further review i still see it different than you and we're yelling
01:01about it and freaking out i didn't realize that the abs system in baseball would be like this
01:09not just can i challenge a ball or a strike but now the crowd gets to participate in this
01:17in real time along with the umpires players and coaches and it is a fact or a fiction there is
01:25no
01:25opinion it is either touching the square right or it is not touching the square do you like to say
01:31what's in the box what's in the box might be the ball might not be the ball and then we
01:36get to watch
01:36the ball come flying at the square and oh it missed it so check this out here's the situation
01:47we're in cincinnati it's the fifth inning sixth inning one of the one of those and um elgenio suarez
01:54is at the plate and the bases are loaded the reds are already up five to three bases loaded two
02:00outs
02:01and he's facing a one and two count with cb buckner behind the dish oh cb and dibs might have
02:10something to say about cb buckner here cb struggler but go ahead okay focus less on what's happening
02:20in this play-by-play and focus more on what the crowd sounds like in cincinnati this is courtesy of
02:29reds tv they lead five to three one of their best hitters is at the plate with the bases loaded
02:35in
02:35two outs in the sixth inning and the count is one and two
03:01it's amazing how minuscule the misses are but these guys you just know it great feel for that
03:07strike zone it was called strike three end of inning now the two two called strike three
03:14tap the helmet again he says it's off the plate away
03:19batter's challenging the pitch here we go
03:28the loudest cheers of the game the reds have been two homers come on back-to-back challenges
03:35and we got a three and two count with the bases loaded in the bottom of the six trying to
03:41build
03:41on a two-run lead now tell me how the story ends next pitch you just grab it out second
03:49okay
03:49and the inning yeah but did you hear that the second roar is the one it's like somebody just
03:57hit the ball deep in the bottom of the eighth of a playoff game it reminds me a lot of
04:02major
04:02grand slam tennis where especially in the australian open where
04:08the serve is out love 15 dude this whole thing is very participatory i wasn't i wasn't thinking about
04:16this right we've known all offseason this was coming and i was just thinking yeah this is good
04:21because you know balls and strikes like let's get it right i i like that i also liked the how
04:29this
04:29strips and i don't mean this to be mean but it strips umpires of their ego a little bit
04:35because there were no checks and balances on balls and strikes and for some reason a culture
04:41has been built in baseball where umpires have always acted like the hitters around them are
04:48their seven-year-old kids and and you're a dad and it's 1962 and they come in and they're like
04:56i don't
04:56agree with what you just said to mom go to your room and the dad's like what the hell did
05:03you just say
05:04to me did you just step to me young man and for whatever reason that's the way umpires have treated
05:14managers and players through the years it was never about is the ball or the strike call wrong
05:21the umpires are just like i can't believe you're speaking to me you're out of the game and i've always
05:29hated that because it's like you just threw someone out and you're wrong and i can see it on
05:35tv well the umpire's ego has been thrown into the trash because now nobody needs to argue the hitter
05:44doesn't need to turn around and be like cb what the hell are you looking at just tap the helmet
05:51and
05:51now we all get to go to the scoreboard and cb can't do a thing about it and he needs
05:58to eat it
05:59when 50 000 people go crazy when they find out that he was wrong i think that's a good thing
06:05i'm not
06:06trying to embarrass the ump but it's like can we get back to right versus wrong instead of this power
06:14play that's been going on for so long right and you can't question balls and strikes that was the old
06:18adage so even if the the manager from the dugout's like cb that wasn't even close he could rip off
06:24the
06:24mask and glare over at you and give you the one index and point you know over the left field
06:28wall
06:29and you're gone for arguing one so now it is a little bit more of a checks and balances of
06:33not
06:34only the the accuracy of the balls and strikes but you're right i didn't even think of this but the
06:38kind of the power play of the umpire because cb buckner he missed six calls that were overturned six
06:46balls and strikes and according to this article i'm reading there could have been nine other ones
06:52that might have been you know questionable but you're not going to just challenge like the first
06:57pitching in that bat and i was looking i think the most common one so far is the two two
07:02pitch
07:02where if it's a two and two pitch and it's outside and he calls it a strike you're going to
07:06challenge
07:07that because it's either an out or you get the full count and i'm a big fan of umpire scorecards
07:12on
07:13twitter they look at every game and they grade every ump behind the plate on every game and cb
07:18buckner was 88 which is five and a half percent below the expected and that is where this abs system
07:27is going to show everybody in real time the umpires the individual umps who are really having the hardest
07:32time and cb buckner is that guy and he's been that guy for a very very long time and i'm
07:39not calling for
07:40his job because i love umpires and officials you know that but i do think that this system is going
07:46to shine a bright light on the umpires who are less accurate than others yeah absolutely and and i'm
07:52with you like i'm not trying to victory lap on cb buckner or anybody else thank goodness angel
07:59hernandez isn't in the league anymore or else this really would have been interesting but um it's not
08:04about victory lapping it's simply about that there was a group in my opinion that did not have the
08:12checks and balances on them and so therefore they took that power and at times kind of abused it they
08:20kind of abused it a little bit where it was like not only is that my call you're not even
08:25allowed to
08:25talk to me about it even if even if the whole world can see that i might have been wrong
08:30there was
08:31this attitude about it was like doesn't matter if it's right or wrong it's my call and i'm running
08:35the show and that just doesn't feel good not anymore like i understand 30 years ago but there's
08:42just too much transparency now on tv and too many cameras and too much in other sports to have that
08:50act
08:50it just didn't feel good anymore and so now what you're looking at is a group that has basically been
08:56able to kind of get away with whatever they wanted to get away with for a long time and now
09:01they need
09:02to have accountability and you can see it on their faces on that second top cb didn't he was not
09:08happy
09:09he was annoyed yeah and he was wrong so and you know these are these are very very difficult calls
09:16like the first one was centimeter the first one was about a centimeter maybe less than that the second
09:20one was just i think a bad call it was pretty far off the edge and far outside but what
09:25these umps are
09:26being asked to do more and more is more difficult than ever because the ball is moving more it's
09:31traveling faster and so i understand where there's going to be some inaccuracy i think the standard is
09:37about 95 percent most umpires are right there some are a little bit above some are below if you're
09:42dramatically below i think as we get further down this road you're going to start to see some clamor for
09:48some changes because what's up next will be robo umps and the umpires don't want to have an
09:54absolute robot calling all the balls and strikes but this is the first step toward that of you know
10:00we want to get the calls right as much as we can it's never going to be 100 but this
10:05system so far
10:06through what three or four days it's been kind of fun to watch as a fan i agree with you
10:11and i also
10:12think the umpires dude you got to get over it think about in the nfl okay i call something a
10:19fumble
10:19turns out his knee was down we go to review his name is down it's not a fumble do you
10:24ever go on
10:25a crusade about stupid ref like you need to be fired no you're sick okay it's review the dude
10:33there's 22 people on the field they're all 300 pounds going a thousand miles an hour
10:37and and they're piling on each other i don't expect you to nail this every every time as to whether
10:43or not
10:43the guy's knee was down before the ball started moving let's just get it right i'm not holding it
10:48against you but i feel like these umpires need to go through puberty on this thing because right
10:54now they're embarrassed when they keep getting it wrong i don't think it's that embarrassing
10:58let's just get it right you guys have done a great job of making this quick it's now entertaining too
11:04which i wasn't even right i didn't even think about that i didn't even think about that but it's
11:08entertaining and it's quick and it's accountable and it's going to get it right and it's coming in at
11:14100 miles an hour and it's okay you're gonna miss some you're gonna miss some but let's just get it
11:18right right they need to learn how to deal with that and that's part of it yeah and i think
11:23that
11:23that's going to take time because you had me thinking about like the nba where there's a call
11:27that you don't like and you are allowed to let the referee know how you feel about it up to
11:33a point
11:34and you get past that point you get a t you don't get ejected and in football it's the same
11:38thing if
11:38there's a a holding call that you wanted made or a holding call that was made that you don't think
11:43was
11:43right you can get after the official and 40 seconds later there's a new play and we move on
11:48you rarely see a flag on a coach for yelling at a ref but baseball you can't even really look
11:54at the
11:54home plate umpire so i do think that they need to move a little closer to the mean the nba
12:00i think
12:00is doing a good job of having players complain a little bit less because they need to go from their
12:05extreme back toward the mean where we're not just going to argue every single call all the time
12:10um there's a happy medium is what i'm trying to say no you just said something that i mean
12:16like yeah i hadn't thought of it that way when when you do get out of line or perceived to
12:21be out
12:21of line in the nba or the nfl there's some sort of process to penalize you but you don't get
12:27kicked
12:27out of the game right baseball doesn't have that it's all or nothing you're either like turn your butt
12:34around and go back sit down and you're not talking to each other anymore or you're out of here
12:37that's it it's zero to 100 in in in two seconds flat soccer you get the yellow card yeah football
12:43you might catch a 15 maybe but that's even rare like a player might catch one if you mf a
12:50referee
12:50on the field you might catch a 15 you get ejected in football but it's either for like you know
12:55crown of the helmet or or you got to a fight or whatever i don't think i've ever seen somebody
13:01ejected for barking at a ref maybe you bump a ref you know something like yeah something like that yeah
13:06you
13:06you
