Tobago is gearing up for Carnival 2024. One of the island's large mas bands, Fog Angels, held a virtual launch of its costumes that are expected to hit the road in October.
Alicia Boucher has the details.

00:00Vibrant, colorful costumes will take to the streets of Tobago come October.
00:05For Fog Angels, it will happen under the theme Cocktail and Bacchanal, with sections like
00:10Tequila Paradise, Purple Rain, which features a curvy option, and Mai Tai.
00:16Fog Angels Head of Production and Communications Kerry Sanderson explains the thought process
00:20behind this year's offering, to which several designers, Tobagonians and Trinidadians have
00:26contributed.
00:27Like when you come to Tobago, what do you want to do?
00:31What people normally do is go to the beaches, they drink cocktails, they have a time, they
00:36go on the Tobago Avenue, the Lime and these things, they have a good time.
00:41So playing around with the theme, Cocktails and Bacchanal, when that came up, it was like
00:47a light bulb.
00:49According to Sanderson, the Bacchanal aspect is where the juve comes in, for which there
00:53are also themed monokinis.
00:56She admits that in 2023, there was an inadequate amount of trucks on the road for the size
01:01of the band.
01:02Sanderson tells us it was based on the guidelines and stipulations issued by the Tobago House
01:07of Assembly last year.
01:09Our anticipation for our band size was going to be very big, bigger than we even, like
01:18we wasn't even expecting it to be so big, right?
01:22So as we saw the numbers coming in, we really tried to see if we could have gotten another
01:26truck on the road, but unfortunately we could not have because of the guidelines.
01:32However, this year, given the results from last year, that matter has been resolved.
01:40Sanderson states that the carnival is seeing growth from tourists and locals, and as it
01:45pertains to Fog Angels, foreign participation is higher.
01:49As for the impact the October carnival is having on the traditional carnival in Tobago
01:53in February-March?
01:54I can only speak on behalf of Fog Angels.
01:59We see it as an opportunity for Tobago to have its very own carnival, to not be in competition
02:06with the mecca of carnival, which is Trinidad.
