The same system that led to thunderstorms in the South is expected to hit parts of the Northeast with up to a foot of snow.
Transcript
00:00 There's still a lot to unpack here as we watch the storm system move through and just the wide scope of things shows you where we've had some of that rain and thunderstorm activity and where the backside of the storm has some potential to bring in some of the snow activity.
00:14 And we actually have had several snow reports as stretching with this storm back through the panhandle of Texas, much of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City also getting in on some snow.
00:23 You can see some of these reports four inches of snow as they went throughout the morning hours.
00:28 Farther south, it's been about the flooding and there have been concerns for flooded roads with some of the heavy rainfall off towards the south and that risk for thunderstorms.
00:37 So let's talk about the rain on the southern side of the storm system.
00:40 We've had one to two inches of rainfall.
00:42 Some places also have had some rumbles of thunder that have produced severe thunderstorms.
00:47 So watch out for the damaging wind threat with these.
00:50 But pretty much all of it is wrapping up as we speak.
00:53 So we're getting rid of most of this energy, which is why a lot of it will focus then on the northern side and that snow potential where we have the winter storm warnings and winter weather alerts.
01:04 So let's again talk about the rest of the night in the southeast.
01:06 You can see some of that snow through Tennessee, but pretty quiet even as we go into tomorrow morning.
01:11 And that line never reinforces with the chance for heavy rainfall across Florida.
01:16 So we are talking about a quieter trend.
01:17 The northern side of the storm system is what we're focused on as we head through the night and into tomorrow morning, because this is where the rain is changing into snow in many locations.
01:28 So this is where we have the challenging forecast.
01:31 You can see rain showers and snow trying to mix in a place like Pittsburgh, more likely in New York as we head towards daybreak temperatures there falling to right about the freezing mark.
01:40 And that's what makes this storm so challenging.
01:42 There hasn't been a lot of cold air recently.
01:44 We've been very mild in some parts of the country here where we're getting this moisture, but the storm has just enough cold air overnight to try to change it into snow on that northern side.
01:53 Five a.m.
01:54 You can already see the drive impacted in so many locations, including just outside of New York City.
02:00 And then as you get pretty much anywhere near or north of Interstate 80, more of that changes over to snow as we go into Tuesday morning.
02:07 You can see that snow really pushing its way towards Philadelphia by eight a.m.
02:13 And that's where we'll see start to see that change over there in Philadelphia to a bit of snow.
02:17 We could pick up a coating to an inch in a place like Philadelphia, New York City, still snowing as we go towards the lunchtime hour before it quickly departs with the storm system.
02:25 And then it moves out of Boston into the evening hours.
02:28 Again, a lot to unpack here as we talk about the snowfall totals.
02:32 It's three to six inches as you look towards the northern suburbs of New York City, south of that one to three New York right on that three inch line or so.
02:41 And Boston, you are in the six to 12 inch range.
02:44 So again, it gets very close depending on where you are, what you'll find.
02:47 Philadelphia coating to one inch with those northwestern suburbs are more likely to experience an inch plus of snowfall.
