00:00As we move forward into March, things are going to be changing rather noticeably.
00:04There's going to be a big pattern change, and these are the three things to know about the period from
00:09March 5th through March 11th.
00:11So basically the second half of next week into early the following week.
00:14Big risk for flooding and severe weather from Texas into the Ohio Valley.
00:18There's going to be a series of systems coming through, and that's also going to bring with it a lot
00:22warmer air from the Missouri and Mississippi Valley all the way to the eastern seaboard.
00:26It'll be dry and somewhat cooler, though, along the West Coast.
00:29All right, let's take a look at that big picture.
00:31Here you can see the big bend of the jet stream down across the Rockies.
00:34That means any disturbance that comes on through will generate some snow showers, not an awful lot of snow in
00:39the Rockies, and of course it will be chillier.
00:41But look at this bulge of the jet stream over the eastern states.
00:44We're talking about temperatures 60s and 70s, perhaps getting up into Pennsylvania by the end of next week or next
00:50weekend into the early part of the following week.
00:52The cold air will be retreating.
00:54It'll do so grudgingly in the north and east, and there may be some early problems with snow and ice
00:58there.
00:59But the big focus is here, across the Ohio Valley, down into Texas.
01:03A series of disturbance will come around the base of this trough, and each one will have the opportunity to
01:08generate some severe weather.
01:09So that's with an influx of Gulf moisture.
01:12You're going to have not only severe weather threats, multiple ones, but a risk of flooding.
01:16There could be several inches of rain in this area.
01:18And then when you get up here into the portions of the Appalachians, that rain combined with melting snow, there
01:23could be flooding from ice jams on some of the rivers.
01:26Now let's take a look at the U.S. drought monitor.
01:27Notice these areas in here, under quite a bit of drought, I think you're going to erase some of that
01:32with this pattern coming up.
01:34In Florida, though, that's not going to change.
01:36With this big upper-level ridge developing, it looks like generally dry weather with very limited rain chances for the
01:42first couple of weeks of the month of March.
01:44Gusty winds will mean a heightened fire threat for those areas as the drought worsens early in March.
