00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're traveling through the Hylian timeline to explore the
00:05 best Zelda adventures not created by Nintendo.
00:13 Zelda Forever, The Tower of Evil
00:20 One of the core components of any Zelda game is its cleverly designed puzzles and in particular
00:26 its dungeons.
00:28 Focusing solely on this aspect of the Zelda series, developer Softendo challenges Link
00:33 to solve increasingly difficult block puzzles in order to defeat the ghost sarcophagus and
00:38 rescue the princess.
00:39 The player will need to plan ahead as their resources for clearing the blocks is limited
00:43 in every level and as Link traverses further along, the maps become even larger and more
00:48 often than not will require a couple restarts to fully understand the complexities of the
00:54 many puzzles.
00:55 While not as in-depth as many other puzzle games, it can be a great starting point for
01:00 Legend of Zelda loving parents to get their kids started in the series.
01:09 The Legend of Zelda, The Fallen Sage and Time's Menagerie
01:13 Including two in a single entry here as they are part of the same series.
01:18 The Fallen Sage and Time's Menagerie are the passion projects of Chance and Lindsay and
01:23 were created using RPG Maker XP, proving where there's a will, there's a way.
01:29 Picking up where the fan comic The Gerudo Wars left off, Link and his companions, both
01:34 familiar and newcomers, set off to stop the Goma army from laying waste to the land.
01:40 The game features well-written dialogue and character interactions as well as some impressive
01:45 puzzle designs, but forgoes the series' real-time combat for more traditional turn-based
01:51 but still manages to be quite challenging, especially during boss fights.
01:56 While the story is designed specifically for those who are familiar with the prequel comic,
02:00 they are still worth a look for devout Zelda fans even if it does play fast and loose with
02:05 some of the series' established lore.
02:07 The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the NES
02:14 Given Breath's expansive and experimental version of Hyrule, the developer of this demake
02:19 decided to take things in a decidedly old-school direction.
02:23 Die-hard Zelda fan Winterdrake recreated Hyrule in the style of the original NES, First Legend
02:29 of Zelda Adventure.
02:31 The 2D version features much of the same interactivity and physics seen in the modern classic and
02:36 still allows players to experiment and find their own solutions to combat and puzzles.
02:41 And yes, you can still set absolutely everything on fire.
02:46 Sadly, because Nintendo is Nintendo, this impressive recreation is no longer playable.
02:57 The Legend of Zelda, Black Crown
03:04 One of the greatest strengths of the Legend of Zelda series is how its gameplay can translate
03:09 into nearly any genre for fans to let their imaginations run wild.
03:14 Playing more like Diablo than a traditional Legend of Zelda title, Link will explore the
03:18 kingdom of Hyrule and battle unending waves of enemies while collecting over 300 different
03:24 items to use in battle, only a few of which will be familiar to the universe, as well
03:29 as gain experience points to level up four different skill trees to battle even tougher
03:33 foes.
03:35 While Black Crown might be a Zelda game only in appearance, players will still find an
03:39 enjoyable adventure slaying the many beasts of Hyrule using A Link to the Past's art style.
03:45 But make no mistake, the game can become quite challenging but packs enough easter eggs in
03:50 it for long time fans to make the journey more than worth the effort.
03:59 The Legend of Zelda, Return of the Hylian
04:01 The first entry in a fan-made trilogy that picks up after the events of A Link to the
04:06 Past, Return of the Hylian and its sequels Only Link Begins and A Time to Triumph follow
04:12 Link after his wish to unify the light and dark worlds.
04:16 The trilogy doesn't make any significant changes to the combat or mechanics already
04:20 found in A Link to the Past besides a couple minor gameplay tweaks and instead focuses
04:25 all its attention to the overarching and engrossing narrative that not only builds off what made
04:30 the 1992 original game such a classic, but also presents a story that grows with its
04:36 audience, presenting a darker and more challenging experience for those who grew up playing the
04:40 SNES game.
04:42 Dawn and Dusk
04:43 A perfectly apt description of Dawn and Dusk would be Dark Souls Ocarina of Time edition.
04:55 Contrasting many of the assets from the original N64 game, Dawn and Dusk tells the tale of
05:00 two warring kingdoms split right down the middle, Dawnside and Duskside, and are both
05:06 visually and tonally distinct from one another.
05:09 What starts out as a familiar adventure quickly makes the player aware that it won't be holding
05:14 their hand through the world.
05:16 The entirety of the world in Dawn and Dusk plays like one interconnected dungeon, and
05:20 everything in it is specifically designed to kill you.
05:24 Dawn and Dusk gives players new mechanics to help them survive, such as a backflip and
05:29 the ability to use weapons previously only available to adult Link in the original Ocarina
05:34 of Time.
05:35 It might not be Link's longest adventure, but the number of times you'll see the game
05:39 over screen will surely pad out the runtime.
05:48 The Legend of Zelda - The Wheel of Fate
05:51 The first entry on our list not to focus on the heroes fans are familiar with, The Wheel
05:55 of Fate instead follows Din, one of the last of the Goddess Tribe who understands Link,
06:01 Zelda, and Ganon are locked in an unending loop of reincarnation and attempts to save
06:06 Hyrule using the three pieces of the Triforce.
06:10 The only problem is she needs to kill each one to recover their peace and find her lost
06:15 sisters and put an end to the cycle.
06:18 The game uses the art and graphical style of the Game Boy entries Oracle of Ages and
06:23 Seasons and players can use a wide range of familiar weapons and items as well as remote
06:28 controlled summons such as the Navi.
06:31 While the game does have a few more technical issues than some of the others on our list,
06:35 it's still a refreshing approach to a familiar narrative.
06:38 The Legend of Princess - The Legend of Princess
06:46 Most of the entries on our list reuse assets or ideas from some of the most popular entries
06:51 such as the N64 or SNES games, but The Legend of Princess, outside of also not starring
06:57 a familiar hero, is closer to the often overlooked Zelda II.
07:02 At first glance, outside of the iconic green tunic, there isn't much of the series DNA
07:07 present, but long time fans will find numerous easter eggs and familiar weapons and enemies
07:12 that are sure to bring a smile to even the most casual Zelda player.
07:16 Featuring stunningly gorgeous sprite visuals and wonderfully detailed environments and
07:21 enemies, the titular princess herself, Bind, is surprisingly emotive and the controls are
07:26 as tight and pitch perfect as you'd expect from Nintendo themselves.
07:31 Plus you get to use your Kuko companion to fly around many of the game's environments
07:35 which is just endlessly entertaining.
07:43 The Legend of Zelda - The Fallen Kingdom
07:50 Breath of the Wild and now Tears of the Kingdom are arguably some of the biggest Legend of
07:55 Zelda adventures Nintendo has ever created.
07:58 But fan creator IAron Waite is close behind with the third entry in their voxel style
08:03 Legend of Zelda series.
08:05 Yet another one that was struck down by the almighty Nintendo lawyers and after a name
08:10 change simply to Fallen Kingdom, the game gives players the open world of Breath of
08:15 the Wild, complete with the hang glider, and lets them explore the cutesy voxel version
08:20 of Hyrule and its many environments and experience its original story.
08:25 As a fan game, Fallen Kingdom is undeniably impressive, and as the third entry in a series
08:31 by a sole creator, it's absolutely astounding the attention to detail and clear love and
08:37 care that went into the project that makes it a must play for Zelda fans.
08:42 While you can at least.
08:48 The Legend of Zelda - Voyager of Time
08:51 Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are widely considered some of not only the best Legend
08:56 of Zelda games, but also some of the greatest games of all time, and likewise, they are
09:01 frequently the starting point for many fan games and adventures, much like Voyager of
09:07 Time.
09:08 Picking up after the events of Majora's Mask, Voyager of Time sees Link returning to Kokiri
09:12 Forest to finally live a life of peace, but finding himself once again plagued by nightmares.
09:19 The game reuses much of the world from Ocarina of Time, but remixes much of the items you
09:24 acquire as well as how Link explores the world.
09:27 The game focuses much more heavily on time travel than its original incarnation, and
09:32 tells a much more personal and darker tale than Nintendo ever would for Link and the
09:37 future in the wake of Ganondorf's resurrection.
