00:00Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're looking at video game remakes that sought to improve
00:12on their originals, but ended up worse.
00:15In case it needs to be said, we're not including remasters or ports on this list.
00:20How touching.
00:22But the law doesn't operate on feelings, now does it?
00:26It operates on evidence, which I have in spades.
00:30But before we dive in, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and
00:35ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:39Until Dawn.
00:40Um, first off, I gotta say, I'm super excited to welcome all my pals back to the annual
00:46Blackwood Winter Getaway.
00:49Until Dawn is the type of game that didn't really need a remake, especially less than
00:53a decade after the original game came out.
00:56Sure, visuals were a bit better, and there were a few extra scenes.
01:00But other than that, there wasn't much new content to justify a remake, and a full price
01:06one at that.
01:07What truly made it not worth it were the performance issues, something that the original version
01:12doesn't suffer from.
01:14Since this barebones remake doesn't even run as smoothly as the first game, nor does it
01:18bring much worthwhile new content, most people criticized it for being needless and unnecessary.
01:25And we have to say, we agree.
01:27Alright, pal.
01:28Come on with me.
01:31Resident Evil 3
01:32Nice job, Supercop.
01:34I'm impressed.
01:35We back in business?
01:36Yeah.
01:37Mostly.
01:38It's easy to look at something that's a visual marvel, and assume it must be better than the
01:431999 original.
01:45And after all, it isn't as if the Resident Evil 3 remake isn't fun to play.
01:50But when comparing which version offers the fullest experience, it definitely falls short.
01:56That's because, for whatever reason, Capcom decided to remove a significant portion from
02:01the campaign, making it end far too quickly.
02:04It was also more action-focused than the original, which made it less scary, particularly when it
02:10came to Nemesis, the hulking brute that stalks you throughout the game.
02:15It's a shame, considering the RE2 and RE4 remakes are both stellar.
02:20You can pull the trigger when it counts.
02:22Hey, take it easy.
02:24She'll get you killed.
02:28Panzer Dragoon
02:30In 2020, Sega attempted a small revival for Panzer Dragoon, a critical darling but
02:43poor seller, with a remake of the first game.
02:46Unfortunately, it wasn't the glorious return many fans may have been hoping for.
02:52Simply put, not enough was done to make this one stand out.
02:56Sega clearly only put in modest efforts.
02:59The visuals, while updated, were still outdated.
03:03There were some new, optional controls that no one really seemed to care for, and despite
03:08being a remake, there was no real expansion or innovation on levels or mechanics to give
03:14it that wow factor, to make new players want to pick it up.
03:18The original is a cult classic, and its remake seems destined to be forgotten.
03:24Diddy Kong Racing DS
03:32We all look back on Diddy Kong Racing as an impressive kart racer that could even rival
03:37Mario Kart 64.
03:39Its remake, though?
03:41Yeah, not many fond memories there.
03:43On paper, it should have been great.
03:46Updated visuals, some new tracks, online multiplayer, and a track creation mode all seem like strong
03:52ideas.
03:53But a game is only as good as it plays, and this one just isn't that good.
03:58The biggest problem comes with the DS's touch screen controls, which are both gimmicky and
04:03frustrating to use.
04:05Its progression system was also a chore, forcing you to repeat races to collect items.
04:11Needless to say, it grew tiresome pretty quickly.
04:14The original Ape Escape, full of wacky hijinks and a surprisingly groundbreaking control scheme,
04:30is a genuine delight on the original PlayStation.
04:33Sony released a remake on the PSP in 2005, and it's basically only remembered as a footnote.
04:39That same control scheme that everyone loved, being the first of its kind to require a second
04:44joystick, had to be adapted for the portable platform.
04:48And it wasn't exactly a smooth transition.
04:51On top of the irksome controls, you had a frustrating camera to deal with.
04:56While much of the charm behind catching a pack of hyper-intelligent apes is still there,
05:01it isn't nearly as fun when you're also fighting against the game's design.
05:13Secret of Mana
05:15Can you hear me?
05:17Calm down and study the enemy's movements to look for an opening!
05:21Despite some minor flaws, the original Secret of Mana is still one of the best RPGs on the Super
05:27Nintendo, with great world building and a well-implemented co-op feature.
05:32Unfortunately, the 2018 remake not only failed to improve on anything of the original,
05:38it also came with its own set of flaws to add to the mix.
05:41The new 3D models and character animations were lifeless compared to the original's delightful
05:47sprites. And since Square Enix didn't do much of anything to update the controls or mechanics,
05:53it definitely showed its age. It's much more worth it to just play the original if you have the means.
06:08Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
06:12There was a time when Pokemon remakes instantly became the definitive ways to play. They had a
06:26shine to them, with strong visual updates and some nice quality of life additions. That time has sadly
06:32passed, with Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl being key examples. You've got the visual update,
06:39but the chibi art style is a bit divisive. More importantly, these games did nothing to improve
06:45on their predecessors. You could still find the same glitches from the originals, and for some reason,
06:52none of the changes made for Platinum in 2008 were carried over. It all felt a bit cheaply made,
06:59and not worth the price of admission. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Turtles in Time re-shelled.
07:15A classic example that still gets old school beat em up fans riled up, Turtles in Time re-shelled is
07:30both dull in its style and irritating in its design. Trading in the original's visual style, which was
07:38inspired by the animated series of the time, for uninspired 3D models was a serious downgrade. Other
07:45than visual changes, a remake provides an opportunity to update controls and gameplay. But this brought
07:51nothing new to the table. Based on an arcade game built to get quarters, you've got the same cheap
07:57difficulty spikes and short experience. This may have been helped if it were based on the Super
08:03Nintendo version, which had extra stages and modes. Flashback
08:16The original Flashback, released in 1992, was an innovative cinematic platformer, with some strong
08:23use of rotoscope animation and an engaging sci-fi plot. The remake, released in 2013, loses everything that
08:31made it special. Gone is the unique style, sucking you into the mystery. It's replaced by a generic
08:38action-adventure palette that loses all sense of personality. In fact, everything about this game
08:44could be described as generic, from its bland story changes to its mediocre mechanics. Add in some
08:50frustrating bugs, and there was really no reason to pick up this remake. Unless you wanted to play the
08:56original, which this at least came bundled with. 13. How are you feeling? Still no memory? I found this
09:05key in your pocket. Ever heard of Winslow Bank? Like Turtles in Time, Reshelled, and Flashback,
09:11the loss of a unique art style, here cel-shaded, makes for a severe lack in personality. But in 13,
09:19things get much worse. The game launched with a ton of bugs, both in technical performance and audio,
09:26with the PC version getting the worst of it. These issues were elevated by controls that were stiff
09:32and clunky, making it tough to find any level of enjoyment. The reaction was so negative that the
09:37developer and publisher released a public apology. And two years later, a separate developer released
09:43an update for the game with a multitude of changes. While some improvements were made,
09:49gameplay and controls were still average. It seems it wasn't worth the trouble.
