00:00Welcome to MojoPlays and today we're counting down our picks for the 10 hardest
00:14levels from the NES that will truly test your gaming skills.
00:25Before we begin, we publish new content all week long,
00:28so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:34Springfield Museum of Natural History, The Simpsons, Bart vs. The Space Mutants.
00:44Bart's goal is simple enough in this maniacal museum,
00:48obtain all of the exit signs strewn about by the nefarious space mutants. Ah, but doing so
00:53is a whole different story indeed. This super unique level sees Bart moving from section to
00:59section in the museum, avoiding mutants disguised as guards, security lasers, snakes, monkeys,
01:05and of course some dastardly platforming sections. Oh, and let's not forget the random hazards that
01:11pop up to send Bart back to the start. Make sure you get every dart gun that you can in order to
01:16hoover up those exit signs and make it through this tough as nails museum of miscreants.
01:28Death Mountain, Zelda 2, The Adventure of Link.
01:30Apart from being an odd duck of a Zelda game, The Adventure of Link is chock full of maze-like
01:44areas and challenging baddies. One look at the overworld map of the Death Mountain area clearly
01:50lays out how confusing this section of the game is, unless you happen to know exactly where to go.
01:56Each of the Death Mountain areas you enter are littered with tough monsters who
02:00often take multiple hits to defeat, and different strategies for Link to employ in order to come
02:06out as the victor, all while you search for important items needed to progress the game.
02:10Fortunately, Link can level up and become a bit stronger,
02:13which certainly helps when venturing through Death Mountain's many hazards.
02:23World C3, Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels.
02:27Dare we say that The Lost Levels World C3 is the hardest 2D Mario level out there?
02:32Perhaps so. Despite this level's brevity, it's insanely punishing.
02:37Very few platforms combined with powerful wind, and myriad enemies equals pure platforming chaos for
02:44Mario. You can swiftly make it through this level by using the aforementioned wind. However,
02:49as you soar through the sky above via the wind gusts and off the screen, you have no idea where you
02:55actually are in the level, apart from the general camera placement. Trying to land on the platforms
03:00and then run into the wind gusts over the bottomless abyss requires the utmost skill and precision. Best of luck.
03:06I mean, come on, it's Contra. Of course it's hard, we all know that. However,
03:27nothing can really prepare you for the sheer gauntlet of punishment that is the game's 8th stage,
03:32Aliens Lair. If the electric ball attacks fired at you from the gaping maws of the aliens embedded in
03:38the walls, floors, and ceilings don't get you, then the sheer relentlessness of the alien bombardment
03:44at the end of the stage certainly will. Contending with that giant fleshy alien organ thing as it
03:50spews out countless aliens is enough to test any Contra player, even those with run and gun gaming skills.
03:57Stage 6-2 Ninja Gaiden. The Ninja Gaiden series is well known for its highly challenging gameplay
04:09scenarios. This point is very, very evident in the 1988 game, especially once you venture to stage 6-2,
04:16which feels like a real difficulty spike in the game. Broken up into multiple layers, accessed via
04:21wall jumping and ladders, Stage 6-2 is here to test your ninja skills. Now, the platforming itself isn't
04:28all that bad here, but the enemies, oh my goodness, they are fast, ferocious, and non-stop. Knowing which
04:34ones to attack and which ones to parkour over and around, along with plenty of ninja speed of course,
04:40will ensure you hopefully at least make it to stage 6-3. Area 8, Blaster Master.
05:02This labyrinth of vibrant neon colors and all-consuming death is not for the faint of heart.
05:07Blaster Master is a tough game all around, but Area 8 really ups the difficulty ante.
05:12The maze-like level layout and plethora of baddies that seemingly crop up out of nowhere are ready to
05:18send you to your demise. Navigating the walls, ceilings, and floors is sorta like drawing a line
05:24through a connect-the-dots, but with multiple hazards and enemies in your path. Then hopping out of your
05:29vehicle to dole out punishment to the boss of this area is an exercise in patience and skill. Only the best
05:35will survive this nightmarish onslaught. Stage 6, Ghosts and Goblins.
05:53Many 80s and 90s gamers out there will likely have some fond memories, or haunting nightmares,
05:58of attempting to play through Ghosts and Goblins on the NES. Retro gamers know how brutal this game can be,
06:04especially because you need to beat it twice in order to get to the game's happy ending.
06:08Well, Stage 6 is the culmination of the gallant and brave Knight Arthur's brutal adventure.
06:14The best way to sum up Stage 6, the castle area, would be platforming bullet hell. Knight Arthur
06:19must ascend the castle, all while contending with a relentless barrage of supernatural baddies.
06:24It feels like you can't even blink once as you play through the stage,
06:28hoping to obtain the key at the end to then face the big boss baddy himself.
06:39Dracula's final clock tower, Castlevania III Dracula's Curse.
06:42Dark, supernatural power and presence is on full display in blocks A1 to A3,
06:58often just referred to as Dracula's final clock tower. This final push in Dracula's castle requires
07:04absolute pixel perfect precision for every single jump and attack. If you hope to make it to the
07:09tough as coffin nails three phased final boss battle against, of course, Dracula himself.
07:15Each block in this level requires a new strategy as you make your way through each one of them.
07:20Every jump needs to land and every attack needs to count here.
07:23It's a short but grueling gauntlet that only true Castlevania fans can overcome.
07:27The Revolution Battletoads
07:47Alright, we all know about how tough the Turbo Tunnels level is from this game,
07:51so much so that we featured it on our hardest Sega Genesis levels list.
07:55However, for the NES version, we wanted to instead highlight the Revolution,
07:59the last stage of the game. The Revolution is a massive revolving cylindrical level
08:04that seems to just go on forever. Getting higher and higher in this revolving level
08:09eventually leads you to the game's final boss, but getting there is unbelievably difficult.
08:14With so many tough baddies to defeat, tight platforming, finicky springs,
08:18and the rotating nature of the level means you are in for a heck of a time.
08:32Damn, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
08:41Yes, of course. I mean, come on. It had to be the damn from 1989's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
08:47This level is downright notorious for how deeply challenging it is.
08:51Many of us 80s and 90s gamers are still scarred from sitting on the floor with our buddies,
08:56NES controller in hand, and countless hours spent trying to forge our way through this absolute
09:02nightmare of a level. While the opening parts of the dam certainly are not easy,
09:06what with the myriad goons trying to pummel you, it's really the underwater sections here where you
09:11must successfully guide one of the turtles through a labyrinth of electricity and damaging seaweed,
09:17in the hopes of disarming a bunch of bombs. Oh, and you have to, of course, do all of this with
09:22a countdown timer flashing at you to hurry up. The underwater section of the dam from TMNT is
09:27essentially the equivalent of playing the board game operation. I mean, talk about stress inducing,
09:33right? So, do you agree with our picks for this list? What are the hardest levels
09:43you encountered in NES games? Let us know in the comments.
