Last week we examined William Branham’s change of identity, which appears to have come after his father, Charles Branham, was arrested and before being sent to prison for violating liquor laws. William Branham was of age to be tried as an adult at the time and changed his birth year from 1907 to 1909 to appear younger after his next youngest sibling died.
It appears that Branham also went into hiding in the revival circuits under another name. His brother Henry was famous back home for his boxing career, and William Branham toured through multiple states using the name “Henry” and even late in his life claimed to have his brother Henry’s boxing record. After a meeting in Vandalia, Illinois went viral through the United Press, newspaper reporters from multiple states came to learn more about this “Henry.” The majority of the articles are a copy from the U.P., which made us miss this in our initial research. But it was not just Vandalia where William Branham posed as “Henry,” and not just the U.P. article that reported “William” as “Henry.”
After leaving Vandalia, William Branham went to Louisiana, Missouri, and multiple papers reported his name as “Henry” in this meeting as well. Some people claimed to have been healed and used the name “Henry” as the man that “healed” them. The St. Louis Dispatch did a full investigative report interviewing Branham’s campaign team and reported that “Henry” had also just come from Houston, Texas, and had been holding revivals in several small towns in the surrounding area. W. E. Kidson, Branham’s campaign manager, offered no correction of the name.
Interestingly, it appears that the REAL Henry Branham had moved from Jeffersonville to Dayton. Henry Branham, William Branham’s brother, married Roy E. Davis’ granddaughter and moved to Ohio. There is a very strong possibility that William used the name “Henry” from Jeffersonville because there was no “Henry” back home in Jeffersonville.
