00:30It takes three or four years to make each movie,
00:45so we have a lot of time to think about the movie and think about the story.
00:49So Ice Age was a story about three mammals and a baby.
00:53And it was a story that took a little while to develop for everybody to meet and get to know each other.
00:59And then for the story to start and get everybody together.
01:05And I wanted something very early in the movie that was entertaining.
01:09And I wanted to make sure that the Ice Age itself was a character.
01:14And I thought, well, the way to make the Ice Age a character is to have maybe a giant glacier chasing somebody, okay?
01:21That's what I was thinking.
01:22And then I talked with Peter Deceve, who's our character designer, and thought, you know,
01:28which is the smallest character we've made?
01:30And he pulled out a drawing of a little squirrel that actually existed back in the Ice Age.
01:36And we put some little saber teeth on him, and that's the character that's going to be chased.
01:40And so we came up with a very quick story about him just trying to keep his acorns together.
01:45And that boiled down to just one acorn.
01:49And then, you know, the Scrat was born.
01:56Interestingly, the Scrat was just going to be a character in that very first sequence.
02:01And at the end of the sequence, he was going to get squished by a mammoth foot after he'd been through everything.
02:06Everything. He'd get his acorn, and then a mammoth foot would squish him, and that was going to be the end of it.
02:12But nobody wanted him to end, so we kept him alive.
02:19The funny thing about Scrat was that he was not going to be an important character.
02:23He was just going to be used in one small sequence, and that was it.
02:27So he was just one of many characters that I had to design.
02:30I didn't think, oh, I'm working on something here that's going to be really important.
02:33And we didn't even think he was going to be important to the first film, let alone the next five.
02:40So, and that's probably just as well, you know.
02:44He was just another fun Ice Age character to design.
02:47There was no real pressure.
02:48I think that the Scrat is, to me, the essence of animation.
02:59He doesn't use words.
03:01It's all about posing and his expressions and visual ideas, visual jokes, gags.
03:11That's what I always wanted it to be, just the Scrat, no sounds.
03:17And I think that he also, you know, his efforts are just all of us.
03:23Anybody that's tried to do anything and either had success or not had success can relate to the Scrat,
03:30because he loses a lot, and I think a lot of us just lose a lot.
03:35And it's fun when it happens to somebody else.
03:48L'aise de glace, l'aise de l'aise de l'aise.
03:53That would be the Scrat.
03:54That's the title.
03:54L'aise de glace, l'aise de l'aise.
04:05L'aise de glace, l'aise de glace, l'aise de glace, l'aise de glace.
