00:00so we were talking about scripts earlier um one of the things you can do as a board artist you
00:14bring something to the script that isn't there and that happened on ice age at the very first
00:18ice age the scrap with the nut was not in the script and what happened how that came about
00:23there was another board artist named bill frank this really cool dude that josh and i have worked
00:27with he's since retired now but um pete de seb the character designer had drawn a little saber to
00:34squirrel at the bottom of the page of just incidental characters and bill frake saw this
00:39thing he's like oh look at that little squirrel so he goes i'm gonna just have some fun with this so
00:44he storyboarded the opening of ice age one there was no assignment or anything he just thought it'd
00:48be funny that he would have this squirrel in a nut and two glaciers squish him and then the elephant
00:52steps on him and so he pitched that and we're like oh my gosh that's amazing and so chris wedge
00:58the director's like yeah dude uh let's just have that be the opening of the movie and then i'm like
01:03guys but what if we put the squirrel in the rest of the movie and they're like moroni he's dead they
01:07stepped on him it's over the joke's over how many squirrel jokes can you make up i'm like a lot so um
01:16i spent about a week this is back when we were still drawing on paper and i literally drew like
01:21a ream of paper of squirrel and nut jokes like things we could do with it and then so i pitched
01:27those and like all right i said look anytime the movie gets boring let's put the squirrel dude back in
01:32there
