00:10what are some go-tos to avoid a flat composition what i would recommend is you look at get any
00:16steven spielberg movie or brad bird movie hit play watch it and pause and ask yourself okay
00:22why is the camera here where it is look at the compositions because both of those guys are really
00:26great with the cinematography and they have really good composition if you want to go even older
00:31school you can look up david lean he did lawrence of arabia that guy on his shots everything is like
00:36the golden ratio and the rule of thirds like nothing varies if you watch those movies it's
00:41amazing and also when you watch films ask yourself instead of watching it to be entertained look at
00:46and say why is the camera in this position what is the director trying to show me here why are
00:50we
00:51looking at it from this angle what's going on what's the story point in this shot or this sequence or
00:55this bit of action kind of like what josh was explaining when we were looking at that scrap
00:59thing he explained that the reason why he put the camera there and not have this teleporter on either
01:04side is he wanted to keep your eye in one place that scrap goes back and forth but more important
01:09is he wanted to teach the audience what this thing does setting up so when he starts playing the jokes
01:14you already get it you have to say wait a minute why is there what's this machine the other thing
01:18is
01:18once you know what your goal is what your character wants don't deviate from that and that's also going
01:22to help you with your shot selection if you know what he wants then you ask yourself what's the
01:27story point i want the audience to know here now what's the best camera angle to do that and you
01:31might have to try three or four different camera angles to settle on one i think it's pairing those
01:36dynamic compositions with more story specific purpose and point like that one in the fridge
01:42where it's the bag and it's looking up there's nothing inherently wrong with that shot but it's just
01:46not focused on anything specific for the story versus framing it where you see his face and it's about
01:51the acting or you're framing it so that we're looking at the bag so it's like you have good
01:55shots i think it's really digging in on the story and the character using all those skills you have
02:00in terms of creating great shots and compositions to help highlight the story beep
02:03you
