00:00It's hard to believe they're already looking at the middle of November, getting closer and closer to the Thanksgiving Day
00:05holiday.
00:05What are three things to know about this period from the 12th through the 18th?
00:08Well, early on, there's going to be a quick shot of cold air that will come into the east next
00:12weekend.
00:13In contrast, you get west of the Appalachians and generally going to be a mild and dry pattern for the
00:18nation's midsection.
00:19Meanwhile, there's going to be some more storminess to contend with along the west coast.
00:23Now, here's the percent of normal rainfall over the past 30 days.
00:26And look at the area of the southwest, Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, up into Colorado and Utah.
00:33That area has seen tremendous amounts of precipitation from September into early November.
00:38Just amazing turnaround in the drought conditions.
00:41Also notice that in Florida, you've had a couple of systems that have brought excessive rains to these areas.
00:46And what has that done to the drought?
00:48It's pretty much wiped it out in Florida and in Arizona and California.
00:52Those areas basically drought-free at this point in time.
00:54In contrast, notice here in the lower Mississippi Valley in east Texas, you could use some rain.
01:00The pattern's probably not going to deliver very much, though.
01:02If you look at what this period is like, you're going to notice the split in the jet stream, a
01:06northern branch up in here.
01:07That's going to continue to keep systems moving into the northwest.
01:10There'll be a deepening upper level off the west coast.
01:14And that'll send a piece of energy through the southwest.
01:17So there's probably going to be one event or maybe two, some minor events that could hit southern California and
01:22Arizona.
01:23And that's going to mean a trend toward cooler weather, balmy across the nation's midsection with very little precipitation.
01:28The storm system that comes through the northeast, we'll kind of detail that momentarily here.
01:33You take a look at that.
01:34As that area of low pressure tries to deepen in the vicinity of the eastern seaboard, you're going to bring
01:39in some cold air.
01:40Now, there's some computer forecasts that suggest some of these areas from, say, the Berkshires to the Poconos could actually
01:46have some accumulating snow.
01:48The more likely scenario, it deepens.
01:50You'll have some flurries that come in behind it.
01:52And cold air may produce some frost all the way down into North Carolina.
01:55North Carolina.
