00:00I actually am excited to see what Todd Munkin does with Shador on Sunday, if that is the case.
00:04I'm also just excited for this game because I think this is incredibly winnable,
00:08no matter the fact that Vegas has the Browns as a slight dog in this.
00:13Yeah, I mean, I want to see how this looks.
00:15I want to see if it looks any different.
00:16I mean, we gave Deshaun so much credit for looking different than he did under Stefanski.
00:21I want to see if the same thing applies to Shador Sanders.
00:23I do think, though, that this has a chance to just muddy how people feel about the season even more.
00:29Why is that?
00:30Because I feel like for a 5-3 start, I feel like most Browns fans have been Larry David
00:37hemming and hawing that very famous gif from one minute to next.
00:42Whether it's Deshaun on any given front, whether it is this team and whether they are enjoying it or not,
00:49there's so much about this season that just feels vague and kind of meh.
00:54And I just never would have thought that for a 5-3 start for a team that we thought was
00:59going to
00:59win five games altogether.
01:02So, like, I think Shador coming in, and again, being stuck in the gray.
01:07He doesn't wow you so much that he takes over the starting job.
01:10He also doesn't vomit all over his shoes, meaning, like, there's some people who are going to think
01:15he should be the starter.
01:17I just think that's what I expected.
01:18I think more people, that's going to be met with a lot more meh.
01:22I think 5-3 has been met with a lot of meh around here.
01:25Well, it's been met with a lot of meh because a lot of people don't believe in this offense.
01:28Yeah.
01:29And so that's kind of why this, it kind of comes at the perfect time.
01:31And I don't know if Shador is going to put on the cape and save the day.
01:34I have zero clue.
01:35Hasn't played a game in 10 months.
01:36I don't really know.
01:37But there's been a lot of people that have been trying to figure out, is the offense broke
01:41or is Deshaun part of the reason why the offense is broken?
01:44So it almost comes at a nice time to kind of reset, get everybody back in the right framework
01:50of everything and find out whether or not an offense averaging 17 points a game should
01:55be averaging 25 a game.
01:56So if you guys missed earlier in the show, Ross Tucker, CBS Sports, NFL analyst, Odyssey
02:01NFL insider did happen to join us.
02:04And one of the things I asked him is whether eight wins would still be a successful season
02:08from the Browns after their 5-3 start.
02:10No question.
02:12I mean, at this point, it'd probably be a little bit disappointing because I'm sure people
02:15are hoping for 9 or 10 or whatever.
02:18But I mean, let's go back to that Jags game week one.
02:21Holy cow, guys.
02:22I mean, I wasn't sure how many games they would win at all.
02:26So for them to be here with some of the wins they have this year, beating the Ravens, beating
02:31the Steelers, I mean, just think about that.
02:34You know, I love that so much for Browns fans that they've already gotten home wins over
02:41those two teams to enjoy.
02:43You know, even that to me is a very large victory.
02:47But how you finish matters.
02:49And you're going to remember the second half of the season more than you remember the first
02:53half of the season.
02:54And I think you want to see that this group continues to build.
02:58I mean, it's still a really young team.
02:59So you would think that they'd be fresh and you would think that they would continue to
03:03improve during the year.
03:04Eight wins would mean you go three and six in the final nine games.
03:08And I would look at that and go eight wins is a real success.
03:13I would not be happy with the way the season finished, the second half of the season went,
03:16but the context would derive a lot of how I truly feel.
03:21But just by and large, eight wins is a successful team to me when you go, when Vegas has you
03:27as a five and a half win team.
03:30However, I think fans would be seething if they ended up as an eight win team.
03:35I think, I think, cause I think there's a lot of fans laying in wait and I don't mean
03:39this in a bad way, but I think there are a lot of people laying in wait to say, oh
03:43great,
03:44we just missed out on quarterback.
03:45So-and-so, I mean, the amount of, of messages I got legitimate messages, our guy, Jay Casey
03:53DMing me being like, all right, can they lose out now?
03:55So we can get the quarterback.
03:55And I was like, they're five and three.
03:57What the hell are we talking about?
03:58You mean because of the concussion news or what?
03:59No, no, no.
04:00Because of the loss to Pittsburgh, the loss to Pittsburgh was enough.
04:02And because of what you said, I do think there's enough people that are like, this isn't real.
04:07Let's just get it over with.
04:08I think, I think those same people who are saying it's not real.
04:13If you end up at eight and nine, they'll say, great.
04:16You won a bunch of games for nothing.
04:18And now we're no closer to getting the quarterback we need.
04:21Well, then you get to yell at those people, you know, you get to turn around and just say,
04:23we're doing a whole off season of you yelling at those people that didn't think eight and
04:26nine was good enough or eight and nine was some sort of lost cause.
04:28I tend to-
04:29I probably won't yell.
04:30I'll be like, I'll be like a friendly approach.
04:32It's like, come on, guys.
04:33Like disappointed dad.
04:34Eight wins.
04:35It's fun, right?
04:37I'm trying to figure out where they get eight wins being upsetting.
04:41Is it the three and six part is what upset me?
04:43I think it's, well, that's what it is.
04:45I think it's starting out five and three to then finish with eight wins.
04:49I mean, if you could dream it up, you would definitely reverse how the order went.
04:53That's not debatable.
04:54Oh, no, I don't think it's about that.
04:55I think it's the idea of if you start five and three, the whole point of this is, well,
05:00this whole thing is worth it.
05:01Maybe that's the way.
05:03Being better than expected for a fair amount of Browns fans, I think is only worth it if
05:09you either write on the precipice of the playoffs or you get into the playoffs.
05:13So if you're a nine and eight Browns team and you're the seventh seed in the AFC, no matter
05:19what happens to the playoffs, I think there's going to be a segment of fans that goes, all
05:23right, it was worth it.
05:23You made the playoffs.
05:24You'll always make the playoffs.
05:26We're not snobbish in that regard.
05:28But I think if you're nine and eight and you miss the playoffs by one game, I think those
05:32same fans will be probably asking themselves, okay, what was this really for?
05:36Well, they need to recalibrate where they're at right now in the season because at five wins,
05:40even if you lose every single game for the rest of the year, you're probably
05:43not getting the number one overall pick.
05:44And I don't even know if that's Mestermaker.
05:46I don't even know if that's, again, Arch Manning's probably not that guy right now.
05:49Okay.
05:49So I don't know what you're really selling out for at that point, but I tell the Browns
05:54fan, you have to reset.
05:55If you really are convinced that you just want to worry about draft pick, reset everything
06:00because right now at five wins, there's no way this ends where you're going to be satisfied
06:04or happy.
06:04All right.
06:05I do want, I don't know if Jake is actually listening because he does like a bunch of video
06:09stuff for him.
06:10I do want, I do want Jake to put out this Twitter poll on our afternoon drive account
06:16on whether after the five and three starred and eight win season would still be successful
06:22for the Browns.
06:242-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-9-2.
06:26And it's interesting.
06:27We threw out that idea and Nelson and Avon Lake called in.
06:30Nelson, welcome to the show.
06:31What's up, Nelson?
06:32What's up?
06:33What's up, boys?
06:34Living the dream.
06:35How about you?
06:36I'm, oh, you know, every day, every day, except for the Buckeyes and the Browns, they
06:42cost me nightmares right now.
06:43But anyway, dude, if, if we win a game, I mean, the, I know the, the only way I would
06:50take it is if, if, if the Sean had a renaissance and he looked like he was the quarterback of
06:57the future and that's not happening.
07:00So, I mean, listen, I'm enjoying the five wins, but do we want to be like, you know,
07:07in that middle tier where we just don't have a chance of getting at least a decent quarterback?
07:13Although the class this year, it's looking a little fraudulent right now.
07:17I mean, I don't know.
07:18So, so let me ask you, Nelson, do you, how far can we carry this?
07:22Like if they, if they're a 10 and seven win team and they lose in the first round of the
07:26playoffs, is that still, is that still not a successful season in your opinion?
07:31I mean, I think it would be.
07:33I mean, for me as a fan, I don't speak for all our fans, but for me, I'm enjoying them
07:36winning, right?
07:37Like, I don't want to see them lose, but, but if, if we're going to fluke our way into
07:41like eight wins and then be like, okay, great.
07:45You had, you won eight games.
07:47Now what, where's your price next year?
07:49Right.
07:50Cause the show is not coming back next year.
07:52And I mean, Sanders, I mean, I love the kid, but it doesn't look like the Browns believe
07:57in him.
07:58And I mean, let's be honest, Gabriel is not the answer.
08:02So what do we do?
08:03So you wouldn't, you wouldn't see eight wins is a, is a step in the right direction.
08:06You said fluke, said fluke your way into eight wins.
08:10I think if you won eight games, it's cause you have more talent than you did last year.
08:15And you took a step forward.
08:17Yeah.
08:17But the most important position on the field, we still have not settled that.
08:21Right.
08:22Like we need, like, I want the Browns to be a perennial winner.
08:25Right.
08:26But Rome wasn't built in a day, Nelson.
08:28No, Rome wasn't built in a day.
08:29And that's, I think that's what the Browns are trying to tell you is that there, there's
08:31going to be a multi-year approach.
08:32But if the end result out of this year, if you go eight wins, you've at least showcased
08:37that you have Todd Munkin, you have your head coach.
08:39Yeah.
08:39You have your guy.
08:40And so like that alone offsets to me, the idea that you'd be able to take a quarterback
08:45at a higher rate.
08:47I love the receivers.
08:49I'm, I'm, I'm a believer in Munkin.
08:51I wasn't when they hired him, but I am, I am a believer now.
08:55I mean, you guys are winning me over, I guess.
08:57I mean, I like this.
08:59I'm being a complete jackass, I guess.
09:01No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
09:03Don't be a win.
09:04No, you're, you're allowed to feel however you want.
09:07We're just going to browbeat you.
09:08That's all.
09:08We're just going to embrace debate.
09:10Nelson, we appreciate you.
09:11Thank you, Nelson.
09:11Yeah, I appreciate you.
09:12By the way, ESPN's out on that.
09:13Now it's embrace personality.
09:15That's fine.
09:16I'm embrace debate.
09:17I'm embrace.
09:17That's my joke to it all.
09:18It's embrace debate.
09:19I'm in, I'm embracing whatever lines my pockets.
09:22Yeah, that's what I'm embracing.
09:24Yeah.
09:25And what is that?
09:26Debate.
09:27Debate.
09:27Yeah.
09:28Let's get that thing going.
09:29We did put it up there.
09:30Great job, Jake, by the way.
09:31At afternoon, 923FAN.
09:33It's like your little producer genie.
09:36He's doing a hell of a job.
09:37Would an eight-win season still be a success for the Browns after the team's five and three
09:42start?
09:43One vote in.
09:44It's my vote.
09:45No, it's three votes in.
09:47Seven votes in.
09:48Twelve votes in.
09:48Oh, my God.
09:49A 66% saying...
09:50Can we keep up with the polls?
09:52You know what?
09:53I'm just reading the percentage now.
09:54We got Kornacki over here on the corner.
09:56This is great.
09:5766.7%.
09:5867% saying no, it would not be.
10:02Tyler in South Carolina, welcome to the show.
10:05Would an eight-win season still be a success for the Browns?
10:09I guess if you're looking from the beginning, yeah.
10:12Maybe not with the five wins now, but I think we look at this Browns team kind of like we
10:19look at the guard...
10:20I say let them keep trying to win, and Barry will find a way to either maybe one of these
10:27quarterbacks.
10:28How do we know that the way Watson's playing, that Munkin hasn't gotten Shador better?
10:33I say let them keep at it.
10:35You want to win.
10:36Why do we want to lose and get draft picks?
10:39Two years ago, they thought the kid from South Carolina was going to be our savior.
10:43Now he's not even, what, a third-round pick?
10:45Like, enough with the quarterback stuff.
10:47Keep trying to win.
10:49They're fun to watch.
10:50I like the team.
10:51And let's see what Munkin can do.
10:53Tyler, we appreciate you, buddy.
10:55Thank you so much.
10:56Yeah, I mean, I do think there is...
10:58And listen, there was a time in my much younger days where I supported the tanking agenda once
11:03upon a time, and 16 Sundays at the time, because they only had 16 regular season games,
11:09they sucked.
11:10And training camp wasn't as much fun.
11:14And honestly, the entire process, you'd get really excited for about a month-ish in April,
11:20but even, you didn't expect them to sign any big free agents or make any big trades.
11:24Well, but this is different.
11:25We have a 5-3 football team, not a 1-7 football team.
11:28Yeah, my point is, that's stunk.
11:31I don't ever want to go back to embrace losing, especially when they've started out at 5-3.
11:37Yeah, when you start out 5-3, all the conversations about tanking for draft picks goes away.
11:41It's up in smoke.
11:42And so, how they get to an 8-win season obviously matters.
11:46But the idea that I can look down my nose at what would probably still be the 5th or 6th
11:51best season
11:52that I've seen in Brown's recent history since 1999, I don't think I can.
11:58I guess the only hang-up I would have is, it's got to be with the idea that all the
12:02young players continue to be good.
12:04Or at least continue to, because your whole hope for everything is that the all-22 team,
12:09all these guys that are 22 and younger, are going to be the reason why you eventually get to a
12:14playoff
12:14and then contending in a playoff spot.
12:16Like, then they have to look good.
12:18If all of them fall flat on their face, then you can have an 8-win season where ultimately,
12:21it seems like you took a step backwards.
12:23The Twitter poll is now dead even at 50%.
12:26Oh, no.
12:26Jim, in Solon, would an 8-win season still be a success for the Browns after the team's 5-3
12:32start?
12:34Well, actually, they did start off 5-2.
12:37They're 5-3 now.
12:38Fair.
12:38So an 8-win season would not be good, because that would mean that they went 3-7 after starting
12:45off 5-2.
12:46Okay.
12:47And I don't see that as a step in the right direction.
12:50But, okay, how many wins do you think they would have at the beginning of the season?
12:54Well, it doesn't matter how many wins I thought they'd have at the beginning of the season.
12:57They have 5.
12:57They went 5-2.
12:59I thought they would have been 5 or 6.
13:01But having started 5-2, 8 wins is not a step in the right direction.
13:04That's a step in the wrong direction as the season progressed.
13:07All right.
13:07So then what would be, like, what's the acceptable...
13:10I understand what you're saying.
13:11Yeah, we do understand.
13:12What's the acceptable end result of this season?
13:16I would say 9-10 wins is better than 8 wins, obviously.
13:22But I don't...
13:23The math does check out.
13:25The math does check out, but they have a very soft schedule.
13:29They don't...
13:31There's no reason why this team, after a 5-2 start, needs to go less than 10 wins.
13:37Jim, we appreciate you.
13:39Thank you so much.
13:39Have a good day.
13:41216-474-0092.
13:43Annick Wilson says,
13:44Anche Peterlin, would an 8-win season still be a success for the Browns after the 5-3 start?
13:529-10 wins is better than 8.
13:54It's tough to argue that.
13:55How it looks, I think, is going to matter a great deal in this whole entire discussion.
13:58And whether or not the young players that we're banking this whole entire thing on, whether
14:02or not they will go to the process, I think is going to matter a great deal, too.
14:05It's interesting.
14:06I just think...
14:07I think there's still a chance that things built on a house of cards, and a house of
14:11cards is the quarterback position.
14:13Like, Deshaun has given you acceptable quarterback play.
14:17We've had a functional offense.
14:20But if you said right now, what's more likely, the Browns turn into a top-12 offense or regress
14:27into a lack of quality offense, maybe non-functional offense, while they're much closer to being
14:33an non-functioning offense, they are being a top-12 offense.
14:37They're already 28th in the NFL in scoring.
14:40It's not like...
14:40I mean, they're already checking off some of those boxes that you're talking about them
14:43potentially getting to.
14:44So, like, it's weird.
14:45Like, I'm confident that the Browns are going to finish probably at least nine wins.
14:51I am confident in that, because that's four and five.
14:53That's pretty doable.
14:54And I also think...
14:55I've heard a couple people talk about this schedule, like it turns into a murderous row.
14:59Yeah, you got the Bengals twice.
15:01Who's talking that way?
15:03We didn't give them a better schedule.
15:04I'll give you that name off-air.
15:06I'll give you that name off-air.
15:07You have a name attached to it.
15:08I thought it was going to be, like, just Twitter ramblings.
15:10No, no, no, no.
15:10Someone thinks this schedule is tough?
15:12Yeah, and then...
15:13Who?
15:13No, I'm not doing it on-air.
15:15Tell me.
15:15Because we don't work with them every day, so they don't know me.
15:18All right, so it might be unnecessary?
15:19Yeah, it might be unnecessary.
15:21Look at me.
15:22I'm going to do a little Shador here.
15:24That was real growth on you.
15:25If I was...
15:26I'm showing you maturity right now.
15:27Yeah, but you actually are being mature about it, which is...
15:31It goes against the argument earlier.
15:33That's because I like the person.
15:34If I didn't like the person, I would just blast them like you wouldn't believe.
15:37I'd put their name on it.
15:38I'd say where you could find it.
15:41Might dox them.
15:42Just kidding.
15:42I would never dox anyone.
15:45Well, but what would your burner do?
15:47I would never have a burner.
15:49Who has time for burners?
15:50I don't know.
15:51Deshaun Watson?
15:52How do you have time for a burner?
15:54Ask Weeroy Bickerstaff that.
15:56Kevin Durant.
15:56Like, honestly, Kevin, get married.
15:58Have some kids.
16:00Durant's a very lonely guy.
16:01He does seem very lonely.
16:02He's a very lonely guy.
16:03And I don't get it.
16:03It's like you see him randomly and it's like Mia Khalifa's hanging out with him.
16:07I'm like, buddy, let her take up your time.
16:09It's a very attractive young lady that I saw hanging out with him.
16:13And I'm like, you got time after that to get on the old Twitter fingers there?
16:18Did not see a photo of him and Mia Khalifa.
16:20Is that a thing?
16:21I might have been thinking about Deshaun and Mia Khalifa eight years ago.
16:24Was that a thing?
16:25You don't remember that?
16:26No, I don't.
16:27I don't remember Deshaun and Mia Khalifa.
16:29Yeah, the video of her in the – it was like –
16:31I remember when she was wearing –
16:32It was an apron.
16:33And she did – they were like –
16:35Oh, and she had –
16:36Right at the house.
16:36I do remember that now.
16:38Was that eight years ago?
16:39I thought he was on the Browns when that happened.
16:41No, no, no, no.
16:42This was Houston.
16:43Deshaun.
16:44Wasn't that a – was that –
16:45Okay, I remember the video.
16:46I do remember the video.
16:47It was before the problematic stuff came out and people were very pro.
16:51So people thought that was wholesome?
16:52People were – no, no, but they were happy for it.
16:54That's a hard way to think that was wholesome.
16:56They were like, you spent some time there.
16:57That's good for you, young man.
16:59Yeah, because it had to have been before Jilly,
17:01and she's been there since the Houston days.
17:03Yeah.
17:04Or –
17:04Well, I'm not going to try to put a man on blast.
17:07Yeah, it happened before Jilly.
17:08I realized what I was doing there.
17:10Of course.
17:11Of course.
17:12Before Jilly, before Leroy Bickerstaff.
17:15You know what's interesting back to your eight-win conversation
17:17and as we've kind of dissected and gone through with it,
17:20I think you're going to disagree with this,
17:22but I think I care more about how the young guys look
17:25than I do the win-loss record when it's all said and done this year.
17:27Yeah?
17:28Yeah, I'm going to care more about whether or not
17:29Judkins is a real running back,
17:30whether or not Harold Fannin looks more like the past couple weeks
17:33or looks like he did the first five weeks.
17:35Top five tight end, buddy.
17:36Well, last couple weeks, no arguing that,
17:38but I'm going to care more about whether or not Boston and Concepcion
17:41are legitimate one-two wide receivers
17:43and going to be a Jamar Chase T. Higgins-esque duo moving forward
17:48than I will whether it's an eight- or nine-win season
17:50if you miss the postseason.
