00:00to talk about this decision why who she expects to play in this game expectations for she or we
00:07head out to the wise heart right we make it right call Kyle Wright hotline you know her from
00:11cleveland.com and the orange and brown talk podcast she joins us every single wednesday here
00:15at 320 ashley bastock joins us now ashley welcome to the show thanks for having me guys lots to talk
00:22about well it is great to have you i i will ask you right now if you had to pick
00:27one who do you
00:27expect to start at quarterback on sunday for the browns yeah right now i would expect chador sanders
00:33to start i mean as todd munkin said in that quote leading into this today i mean it is just
00:38it's
00:39hard for a quarterback to quickly clear the concussion protocol and take the number of reps that
00:46he needs as as he preps for the week so i think it is just very different than you know
00:52right tackle
00:53titus howard clearing the protocol late on saturday uh or even grant felt it a couple of weeks ago
00:59clearing the protocol not really practicing during the week and clearing it right before the game so
01:03i would expect that we're we're looking at chador sanders starting this game and i mean i i have
01:10expected todd munkin to just name him the starter today i i understand why he didn't but i would be
01:15surprised if deshaun watson ended up starting this game if it is chador then uh what are your
01:21expectations for him in this game yeah i think we we were just talking about this i mean i really
01:26think that chador sanders has been his most comfortable obviously we saw it last year i think
01:31we've seen it in practices uh throwing that deep ball so i i really think you know i think todd
01:36munkin
01:37today said oh like not a lot changes because the pieces around the quarterback haven't changed in
01:42terms of the game plan but i do think there are obvious differences i think the quarterback run game
01:48changes a little bit obviously right and i think with chador sanders you're wanting to see more of
01:54those defaults and i think that that could be really good for a guy like denzel boston in particular who
01:59obviously started out so strongly he was leading all rookie receivers after the first six games he's
02:06fallen off a little bit these last couple of weeks production wise so i'm curious if we'll see a
02:11jump in his production this week uh good for casey concepcion and these two guys got a lot of reps
02:17with chador in the off season as well so i think those would probably be two of the biggest differences
02:23for me ashley is this a good game to be chador's first start of the season i think so i
02:29mean in terms
02:30of the the competition i know the saints uh defense is not the strongest right and both of these teams
02:37have had issues starting fast i just looked up uh some of these numbers the browns are minus 52 in
02:44the first quarter right now the saints are minus 38 in terms of getting outscored by their opponents
02:50and those are the two worst marks in the league by far so i think he has a chance to
02:57put some early
02:58points on the board against uh a passing defense and i think a defense overall that's ranked in you know
03:04definitely in the bottom five in the league if my memory is correct uh and it's it's going to i
03:11think
03:11present some opportunities to him and it it to me is not unlike the raiders game from a year ago
03:19where
03:20he was able to come out and hit some of those explosive plays uh just going against the defense
03:25that is not necessarily the strongest are we at a spot where chador could just take the job and run
03:32with it or has deshaun done enough in the first eight games where it really doesn't matter what
03:37chador does it's going to end up being deshaun whenever he's healthy enough to come back yeah i
03:42mean to me this is a case of never say never right i mean i i joked about this today
03:47the sports idiom
03:48being wally pipped is is a idiom for a reason like it's happened across uh every professional sports
03:55league where somebody gets hurt somebody comes in does a great job and it's that guy's job right so
04:00i think it's a it's a never say never scenario we'll see if the browns end up winning uh this
04:08game with him i mean that is a factor in all of this i mean deshaun has gone out there
04:13and won five
04:13games at least for them so he has that working for him but i don't know you just start things
04:18like if
04:19this team starts losing if they want to see more of chador um you just can never really know it's
04:24kind
04:24of how i look at it but i don't think like you can say the job is locked up especially
04:29knowing
04:29how long this quarterback competition went on in the off season
04:37ashley uh one of the other things we get to talk about uh this week is the run game considering
04:43uh sorry the run defense coming off the steelers games the titans games and the ravens game here
04:48uh do the browns believe the run d is fixable i would think i think so by the way that
04:55everyone
04:55is talking you know and and they think they can bounce back as a defense but i'm i'm curious to
05:02see what this week looks like more than anything and i think that will go a long way towards answering
05:08this question because i think the steelers did a good job of basically mimicking what the titans and
05:14their offensive coordinator brian dable put out on film the week prior they did really good with
05:19those sort of trap blocks against the browns interior line so you know i'm curious like how
05:26much of this too is injury related right like mason graham is still fighting through his leg injuries
05:32that he suffered a little bit i think carson schlesinger i think is fighting through something
05:36even though he and anyone else will never admit that so uh i think too you look at the fact
05:41that
05:42they're not doing really three linebacker looks they're going with that extra corner that extra
05:46safety so is that playing a factor uh i'm not sure i don't i don't think it's a personnel issue
05:53but i
05:53think right now mike rutenberg has to get back to the drawing board on some of these things and figure
05:59out uh how to combat maybe some of these trap blocks what they can do uh with that because i
06:05think
06:05that'll really go a long way how is the offensive line getting worse with each week
06:10well i think the penalties aren't helping right like the penalties are i think the killer for this
06:17team it's todd munkin's favorite quote about browns hurting browns but you know when i rewatched that
06:23game the all 22 film and you know really kind of watched and rewound each of those eight sacks like
06:29i would say the blame was probably pretty evenly split across the board there were certainly plays
06:35where it looked like deshaun dropped back too far uh obviously didn't make the best decision with
06:40that ball that was ruled a fumble when he tried to throw it away as he was getting sacked uh
06:45there
06:45were some i think protection breakdowns you know spencer fano got beat on one he was really hard on
06:50himself uh jaleel mclaughlin the one running back uh missed the block on the patrick queen sack so
06:56the that sort of blame i think wasn't all on the offensive line to me the biggest issue are still
07:03these penalties like is that just a function of these guys haven't played a ton together still in
07:10the grand scheme of things i mean really we're talking about i think it's seven games together
07:15because elton jenkins missed one and luke whipler had to start so i don't know if that's part of it
07:21but
07:21i i certainly think the penalties are the biggest issue and it's a concern that they're still playing
07:27such a factor this is most penalized team in the nfl right now ashley we had uh big debates on
07:33this
07:33station last week going into the steelers game how important that game was uh some people downplayed
07:40it everyone else seemed pretty sane about it uh how important is this state's game become given what
07:45happened in the steelers game i mean i do think it's it doesn't quite reach the level of importance
07:51of the steelers game to me because like so much was at stake and the fact that it went poorly
07:56was
07:56not great i mean it left i think a lot of people questioning like uh-oh is the season in
08:02general
08:02about to turn from here like is it just on blueprint how to beat this team but i do think
08:07if you go to
08:08new orleans uh and being a saint beat a faint team that you've won more games than uh when in
08:14theory i think
08:14your defense should still be the best unit on the field like to me this is one of these games
08:20that
08:20you're supposed to win so it has an importance for that and i know they're not favored or whatever
08:24like people are gonna probably yell at me for saying that but i do think there are some of these
08:28games i look at where i'm like you know what the browns defense is the best unit on the field
08:32if they
08:32can give these guys a chance they should win this game and that's kind of how i feel about this
08:37game
08:37new orleans is obviously a very difficult place to play so even though the saints have only won two games
08:43there is the challenge of that as well and i think it would be important to end this crazy road
08:49stretch where six of nine and then three in a row have been on the road with a win so
08:55you can at
08:55least say in that three game stretch that you went two and one even though you didn't win the most
09:00important game of the bunch given all of the division implications so i think it's important to kind of
09:06boost morale uh but obviously just does not reach the level of importance of that sealers game last
09:12week unfortunately ashley i want to go back to the quarterbacks for a second i wanted your
09:16interpretation and what you how you saw or at least heard uh when chador had that back and
09:20forth with mary k where he just kind of smiled and then was like when i'm smiling it means something
09:25did you read that as him talking about it like he sees something within the saints defense that he
09:29feels good about or what was your takeaway with that odd reaction yeah i don't really know it was kind
09:36of odd right so i'm not sure if he's just trying to be coy and didn't want to give something
09:42away or what
09:43but uh we'll see right i don't know we'll see if he can pick apart this same defense in a
09:49particular
09:49way come sunday and maybe uh we'll be able to go back to that with him but yeah it was
09:54certainly an
09:54odd reaction by him in the press conference ashley i want to commend you you didn't bait jonathan and i
10:01to to really sending this thing off the rails no taylor swift references no uh you know you did a
10:09good
10:09job today i'm gonna commend you here i did a good job that's definitely never me but i think you're
