00:00At 5 and 3 now is where they sit, and we will bring in Mary Kay Cabot from the Plain
00:05Dealer,
00:06Cleveland.com, and the Orange and Brown Talk podcast.
00:10She is on the Wise Heart Right.
00:11We make it right.
00:12Call Kyle Wright Hotline.
00:14Hi, Mary Kay.
00:14How are you?
00:16I'm doing great, guys.
00:17How are you doing?
00:17Hi, Mary Kay.
00:17We are doing just dandy.
00:20No, we're not.
00:20Andy's all depressed because he thinks the Browns have thrown the season away because
00:24they lost one game in Pittsburgh.
00:25I'm not saying they threw the entire season away.
00:29Now, I thought Quinshawn ran really, really hard in Tennessee.
00:33They were not able to make any hay on the ground in this particular game, and they also hemmed
00:39in Deshawn, so he wasn't even able to extend plays in this particular game, and sometimes
00:45I think he, I don't want to say panics, but I think he gets a little impatient and doesn't
00:52let the game kind of come to him a little bit, and I thought that in some instances,
00:58he probably held the ball a little bit too long, thinking that he could do something
01:01with his legs, and he actually couldn't.
01:04So everybody's going to have to watch this film, own it, and then figure out how to pick
01:09up their performance and play 15, 20% better as a man.
01:14Mary Kay Cabot joining us from the Plain Dealer, Cleveland.com, and the Orange and Brown
01:17Talk podcast.
01:18Do you think there's any chance here, Mary Kay, that as the trade deadline approaches
01:23next week, that the Browns decide that Zach Zinter, Luke Whipler, Tevin Jenkins, Parker
01:30Brailsford are ready to go if Tevin's all healthy, and could play as well, if not better, than
01:38maybe one of the three free agents that they signed in the offseason, meaning they could
01:42trade an offensive lineman here before the trade deadline?
01:45Or do you think they're locked in on this group and just seeing where it can go?
01:49I think they're pretty locked in on this group to see where it can go, but we must remember
01:54this about Andrew Barry.
01:55He loves to make deals.
01:57As of last weekend, I didn't really get the sense that there was anything on the front
02:02burner, anything really cooking, but that doesn't mean he's not going to continue to try.
02:07So as this week goes along, I'm sure that he's going to be working those phones, and I'm
02:12sure that teams are going to be picking up the phone and calling the Cleveland Browns.
02:16Will anything come to fruition?
02:17We don't know, but certainly we know that Andrew will try.
02:22I think there are things he would like to add to the football team, including possibly
02:26a blocking tight end, maybe an edge rusher if they can find one out there, and I'm sure
02:33there are a few other positions as well.
02:34I think that they would more so be thoughtful buyers than sellers at the deadline.
02:39But once again, if someone comes calling for one of their guys, makes an offer they can't
02:44refuse, I'm sure they'll be willing to deal.
02:47Is quarterback anywhere in that mix that you're talking about?
02:51Well, you never know.
02:52No one is off limits.
02:53No one's off limits.
02:54They're not looking to trade Shadur.
02:56They're not looking to trade Dylan.
02:58They're not looking to trade Jerry Judy.
03:01But if somebody needs one of those guys and they pick up the phone and call, they're not
03:06going to slam the phone down before listening.
03:08So they will have these conversations as they always do, but they are not the ones picking
03:13up the phone and saying, hey, we've got an extra quarterback here.
03:16Would you like to have him?
03:20Could they be looking for something big at the trade deadline, Mary Kay, and maybe quarterback?
03:29ESPN has a story out.
03:30Three teams that should trade for Justin Herbert.
03:32They list the Browns as one of them.
03:34Minnesota's in there.
03:35A couple other teams, or another team.
03:37Could they go out and look big at the trade deadline rather than just maybe tinker here and
03:42there or trade off a piece?
03:44Well, I don't think that Justin Herbert is going to be available in a trade.
03:49So I think people can speculate about that if they want to, but I don't really foresee
03:54that happening.
03:55If he obviously were available, there would be plenty of teams that would be interested
03:59in them, and the Browns would be crazy not to toss their hat into that ring.
04:03But I just don't see that as a viable option right now.
04:07They're not even willing to trade Khalil Mack, which is something I think the Browns should
04:11still be trying to do.
04:15I also like Denzel Ward, Jerry Judy.
04:19I know we've talked about those guys before.
04:21Are those guys that you're saying that if someone came in and knocked their socks off,
04:24they'd seriously have to consider it?
04:27Well, they would.
04:28I mean, nobody thought they were trading Miles Garrett until it made sense, until it made
04:33complete sense for them to do so.
04:36So we can never say never.
04:38Now we know for sure that no one is off limits and everyone has a price.
04:42It's just a matter of who is going to be willing to pay a premium for some of these guys.
04:47People don't want to part with their high picks, especially with a pretty decent quarterback
04:52draft class coming up, or at least we originally thought it was going to be a decent quarterback
04:57draft class.
04:57We'll have to see how that ends up playing out.
04:59But most teams do not want to give up their premium picks if they can't avoid it.
05:04And right now, I don't see anybody clamoring after any of the Browns players.
05:10You've had eight games to look at Todd Munkin and the coaching staff.
05:15You impressed?
05:16Are they doing the right things?
05:18Yes, I do think so.
05:20I think we have to remember they're playing with one of the youngest teams in the NFL.
05:24The offense has got to be the youngest offense in the NFL.
05:27And you're playing with a completely overhauled offensive line.
05:30We knew it was going to be under construction.
05:32We knew there were going to be growing pains.
05:34But once you get to five and two, you start to think, oh, maybe this team is better than
05:38we think it is.
05:39Well, maybe the team isn't that much better than we thought it was going to be.
05:43Maybe in some instances, they were able to pull out a victory in the final couple minutes
05:49of the game.
05:50And now some of those growing pains are going to be evident as they go forward here.
05:56So we'll just have to see.
05:57I mean, teams are now sort of figuring out, oh, here's what we can do to the Cleveland Browns.
06:02If they didn't have that film in the early going, now they're identifying the weaknesses
06:06and they are exploiting those weaknesses and the Browns are going to have to get those
06:10things cleaned up.
06:11All right.
06:11Do you have a better feel for what the AFC North is now through eight weeks?
06:17Well, I'll tell you what.
06:18I mean, what we thought it was going to be changed drastically with the thumb injury to
06:23Lamar Jackson.
06:24So that leaves this thing completely wide open.
06:26And the reason why you have to continue to keep your foot on the gas is because you never
06:31know what can happen going forward.
06:33You don't know who's going to stay healthy, who's not going to stay healthy, who's going
06:37to fall on hard times, who's going to go on a run.
06:39So the Browns are still very much in it right now.
06:43And, you know, the Pittsburgh Steelers look like they're kind of coming together and the
06:48Bengals do as well in some respects.
06:51The Ravens, we don't know where that's going to go yet.
06:53So it's all still kind of bunched up, but I think it's still there for the taking.
06:57And if the Browns can just go back to the drawing board after this tail whooping, then
07:04I think they can get it back together and try to make that playoff run.
07:08Let's remember, they are finishing out this weekend a stretch of six of their first nine
07:13on the road.
07:14And even if they can come out of that with five victories, even if they don't win this
07:19game, I still think that keeps them in the hunt.
07:22I know you wrote a story about it on cleveland.com.
07:25I'm just curious, your assessment of Shador Sanders in that small little frame that we
07:29got of him on Sunday.
07:31Very tough situation to get thrown into with a team that's playing with its hair on fire.
07:36And we know that that Pittsburgh Steelers team was loaded for bear from the very, very
07:41beginning.
07:42And they were coming.
07:44They were going to come after whichever quarterback was going to be in there, and they were going
07:48to make it heck on wheels for that quarterback.
07:50And I think part of that stemmed from the gauntlet that Jared Verse threw down.
07:56I think that made it difficult on the quarterbacks because those guys were just playing lights
08:03out in that game.
08:04So I think it was going to be tough on whoever was going to be in there at quarterback.
08:07But certainly to get thrown in in that moment and have to try to function, that's difficult.
08:14And I don't think it informs what Shador Sanders would be able to do if perhaps he had game
08:21planned for a week for a certain game.
08:23Now, he does have to be ready to go in at a moment's notice and function.
08:26But when you're talking about Deshaun Watson getting sacked eight times in that game, you
08:31know that that's going to be a tough road.
08:33Do you think he was ready?
08:35I'm sure he was as ready as he thought he could be or felt that he was ready.
08:39I'm sure he prepared to be ready.
08:41But, you know, were the Browns ready?
08:43Was Harold Fannin ready when he fumbled on the first play?
08:46Was Deshaun Watson ready when he got stripped on the second play of the next drive?
08:50So I don't think they were ready for the intensity that the Steelers brought.
08:55And then last question, do you think?
08:57Like, is there any question at that backup quarterback spot right now?
09:02I don't think so.
09:04I think that right now, Shador Sanders is the backup quarterback.
09:07And I think that in the event that they need to go to a number two or if they want
09:13to start
09:13a different quarterback at some point down the road, the next man up is going to be Shador.
09:18That's how I think it still stands.
09:19And until I see otherwise in practice or I hear otherwise or someone tells me otherwise,
09:24that's what I'm sticking with for now.
09:26All right.
09:27Mary-Kate Cabot, thank you very much for reading every day.
