Toyota is entering the humanoid robot race, taking on Tesla and China. ๐Ÿค–

The Financial Times reports (Oct 25, 2026) that Toyota is using 20 years of robotics research to commercialise intelligent robots. You may know its AI basketball robot CUE, which made 2,020 free throws in a row for a Guinness World Record in 2019. The newest version, CUE7, debuted on April 12, 2026 at Toyota Arena Tokyo, now dribbling and moving around the court. But the bigger game is the factory: Toyota plans around 400,000 robots across its own plants (150,000) and group company facilities (250,000), with spending of up to ยฅ1 trillion a year from 2028, as reported by Nikkei Asia, Ars Technica and Automotive World. Its humanoid Eley rolls on wheels and learns by watching Toyota's own workers. And Walden Robotics, a spin-out from Toyota Research Institute, launched in July with $300 million at a $1.1 billion valuation, in a round co-led by Toyota. Tesla has started building Optimus, and Chinese rivals are moving fast. Can Toyota catch up?
