Wind and surprisingly high waves are continuing in both Florida and California, but beginning to gradually ease up.
Transcript
00:00This is impressive. There were two spots in Florida and three in central and really southern parts of California
00:06that broke records today according to the tide and the gauge data at coastal locations,
00:15ranking number one, highest high tide in the books today.
00:19And some of these sites have been around for maybe a couple decades.
00:23The Southport Everglades, Florida location has been only around for nine years,
00:27so worse flooding in a decade there.
00:29But look at this, 121 years in the database for San Diego's point of reference,
00:34and this is the highest water level there.
00:37In the absence of a tropical system, which we rarely see in southern California, it's impressive.
00:41We have had that swollen area of larger bubble of water that's a little bit higher than normal.
00:50We've been talking about that overall northward-moving Kelvin wave
00:55that has increased the water levels by 6 to 12 inches.
00:59And then you throw in an onshore wind and the king tides, and that's a problem on the California side.
01:03But on the east side, here we have Florida, and here is our problem.
01:07We've got an area of low pressure just south of Grand Bahama Island.
01:10Strong northeast to southwest winds buffeting the Florida coastline.
01:15We're gusting to 30 miles per hour right now in Melbourne.
01:18Over the past 24 hours, top gust was 33 miles per hour.
01:21So the winds have been persistent since Sunday, and that's plowing some of the seawater
01:25and sweeping it into the east side of Florida.
01:28We're dealing with big waves, 10 to 15-foot wave heights north of the Bahamas east of Florida.
01:32That's part of the problem.
01:34And when you throw in the king tides, so the moon's gravitational force,
01:39the secondary gravitational force that helps to slosh the water back and forth
01:45as the moon goes around the earth, that's responsible for our tides.
01:51If we were just dealing with the moon's influence, we'd have that purple trace
01:54where the water levels, high tide and low tide, but you throw in that onshore wind,
01:58we're adding about 2 feet to that with the current set up in Mayport, Florida.
02:03That's near Jacksonville Beach.
02:04So tomorrow morning's high tide will be another more exaggerated high tide,
02:08but even this evening we're dealing with coastal flooding as well.
02:10There's an increase in this rain shower action right along the Florida coast
02:15from Port St. Lucie all the way down to Miami in the next 20 or 30 minutes,
02:19so beware of that.
02:19Some gusty showers move on through.
02:21Air temps, a little comfortable.
02:23It's nice and cool here in Norfolk, only 63, and other areas are a little bit warmer.
02:28Nobody's too hot out there.
02:29Dallas, 83.
02:30It's a pretty nice time if you're inland, but Wednesday, pleasantly warm.
02:34Still some showers will be impacting us in central and south Florida,
02:37and the wind will continue to blow northeast to southwest,
02:40carrying the rain showers mainly into central and south Florida.
02:44Some of these may impact areas near or just south of Jacksonville,
02:47but we're highlighting areas closer to I-4 down in Miami with the best chance for Thursday.
02:52And Friday, the Florida Peninsula, again, facing some rain showers here and there.
02:56So again, lots of moving parts out there.
02:58So again, lots of moving parts out there.
02:58So again, lots of moving parts out there.
02:58So again, lots of moving parts out there.
