00:00Beaches on Florida's east coast were hit by high tides, pounding surf, coastal flooding and high winds over the weekend.
00:06This video from Brevard County shows the beach and dunes in Indy Atlantic washed away.
00:11Rough conditions could last several days and the Brevard County Ocean Rescue is urging people,
00:17please stay off the beach until these conditions improve.
00:21It's that combo of high tide and the full moon.
00:25That's right and the strong onshore winds really leading to more trouble here as a low pressure system is lurking
00:33near the Bahamas.
00:34We're on the north side of that in Florida so an onshore wind will continue to drive coastal flooding through
00:40several more high tide cycles.
00:43So that's one of the big stories that we're tracking here this week especially in the first half of the
00:47week.
00:47So let's jump into it and here we are right now.
00:50Now low pressure is slow moving over the Bahamas and on the north side you can picture that counterclockwise flow.
00:56This onshore wind, it's active, it's a gusty breeze and it's just plowing seawater into the east side of Florida.
01:03Some of this gets trapped into the St. Johns River near and southwest, west of the area around Jacksonville Beach
01:09and down into much of the area of Florida north of Orlando.
01:13That river sits near sea level so it's coastal and tidal for much of its journey.
01:18And the showers are part of the story but man that onshore wind is leading to again a lot of
01:23coastal flooding out there.
01:24And some of that footage there from Hutchinson Island south in Florida there.
01:29It's not from rain.
01:30Look at the blue sky.
01:31That is seawater that's been pushed into some roads and so forth.
01:35One area that's especially prone to this is Charleston Harbor.
01:38And back on Friday we talked about major flooding or at least strongly moderate to borderline major flooding at times
01:44this weekend.
01:45And here we are and you'll notice that every other high tide is a little more impressive than the previous.
01:51So it's kind of alternating a moderate or more limited high tide than a bigger high tide.
01:55A more limited one than a bigger one.
01:57And the one that we're most concerned about takes us into Tuesday morning with minor flooding at Charleston Harbor.
02:02Let's take a look at another area here.
02:04Here we have Mayport, Florida.
02:05This is near Jacksonville Beach.
02:07And if there were no onshore winds the more purple shaded line there would be our high tides.
02:15And it would be a strong high tide because of the full moon.
02:18But overall you're going to add about a foot plus to that.
02:22Maybe adding about a foot and a quarter above that because of the onshore wind.
02:27And again this evening's high tide is going to lead to more flooding in many areas as well.
02:32Now the rain is pretty limited.
02:33That's kind of the second story here.
02:35That onshore wind leading to the coastal flooding is the main driver in why we're talking about the southeast coast.
02:41But there are some brief showers that are kind of pivoting through.
02:43And I kind of like the way Bernie said it.
02:45He said most of these are lasting about 30 minutes or less coming in from the east side of Florida.
02:49And a lot of these aren't even making it to the Gulf Coast side.
02:52They're really impacting the east side.
02:53So we're kind of just drawing a little sliver of southeast Florida with the showers that are going to be
02:58kind of a nuisance for your day tomorrow.
03:00But it's windy and more coastal flooding will be a problem.
03:03And we're keeping an eye on this.
03:05Meanwhile other parts of the Atlantic very very busy and very active out there with a lot of action across
03:11the Atlantic.
03:11So we're going to be digging into the international forecast in a little bit.
03:14But overall the southeast forecast pretty active with showers and coastal flooding.
03:21The Atlantic is alive even though there aren't any official named storms right now.
