The latest episode of storms to sweep through the middle of the U.S. is dumping hail and heavy rain.
Transcript
00:00So we've been tracking a couple of nasty storms. In fact, there have been even two separate tornado warnings
00:05associated with various parts of this complex of thunderstorms, barely south of Sterling,
00:10barely east-southeast of Fort Morgan, Colorado. So we've got some issues there.
00:14Some of these are hail producers there. Adena School, two-and-a-half-inch diameter hail.
00:18It's big-time hail that can break windows.
00:20Into Medicine Bow, Wyoming. It's 3.06 p.m. Mountain Time.
00:23We had a tornado, an EF Unknown-rated tornado.
00:26It already raided EF Unknown. That implies it touched down in an area.
00:31It didn't produce any damage, but it was definitively documented by at least an eyewitness
00:37or perhaps probably this day and age, somebody with a cam.
00:42And Storm Chaser likely videoing that one.
00:45We had funnel clouds in Edgerton, Wisconsin.
00:47Funnel cloud in Spencer, Wisconsin.
00:49Even up in the northern parts of Minnesota, funnel cloud earlier today up at the Goodridge.
00:53But also some large hail.
00:55And again, some of the hail about the size of half dollars there.
00:581.25-inch diameter.
01:00We also had some flash flooding.
01:02And earlier, if you tuned in, you may have seen some of the footage of vehicles stranded in floodwater.
01:06Tulsa firefighters helping to push people in a bad spot there where their vehicles were stranded in water.
01:12Broken Arrow, we had some high water down into Louisville, Arkansas as well.
01:16So again, the storms that are trending at this hour here.
01:19We've got some big ones, some at times bringing hail and occasional rotation into parts of Wisconsin.
01:25Zooming in on the area near Chicago, big storm moving into the area near north Chicago.
01:30Rockford seeing some of that.
01:31We have a pair of tornado warnings that have been issued here in some cases into eastern parts of Colorado.
01:38And then eastern parts of New Mexico in the high ground and drifting into areas near the Raton Mesa up
01:44in northeastern parts of the state near and east of Raton.
01:47Some big dog thunderstorms there with some large hail.
01:51Let's take a look at the current temps across the plains.
01:54And again, we're in the upper 60s in Chicago where we're a little more stable compared to areas to your
01:59west where you are in the 80s out near the Davenport area.
02:02105 in El Paso, big time heat in west Texas.
02:05Here are our watches, the newer editions, Tornado Watch, western Nebraska, southeast and central parts of Wyoming.
02:14And then into areas around and barely east and north of Denver.
02:18Technically, the Denver city limits are not included in the Tornado Watch, but Aurora is in other areas off to
02:23the east near Fort Morgan.
02:25Severe thunderstorm watch from Pueblo south of Las Vegas, New Mexico, and areas like Wagon Mound down to Clovis.
02:32And also into areas around eastern Wisconsin and northern Chicago.
02:37Chicago has actually been added to the watch.
02:38It's a new addition.
02:39Cook County added to the severe thunderstorm watch because of the trend.
02:43So overall, we're looking at a moderate risk of damaging wind and hail.
02:47Southeast Wyoming in through eastern Colorado.
02:50Isolated tornadoes, that's a legit risk out there.
02:52And you can see damaging wind and hail are our main concerns in eastern Colorado this evening.
02:57And tonight, some cities kind of in the prime spot for severe weather.
03:01Cheyenne, Wyoming, Sydney, Nebraska, Goodland, Kansas, Fort Morgan, and Lamar, Colorado.
03:06Damaging wind, large hail, isolated tornadoes, and frequent lightning.
03:10Overnight tonight, big storms.
03:11Denver to Wichita.
03:12Kansas City.
03:13Topeka could be clipped by one.
03:15Oklahoma City scattered thunderstorms.
03:17Little Rock, St. Louis, Chicago even this evening.
03:19Again, Chicago, a newcomer to that severe thunderstorm watch.
03:23Moving forward tonight and tomorrow, storms rumbling east from the plains.
03:27A new episode breaks out Thursday afternoon and evening.
03:30We'll be watching them rumble across the eastern part of Colorado into the central plains.
03:35And then we get into more trouble in southern Indiana, southern Illinois, Kentucky into Friday with more strong thunderstorms.
03:42So the upper level energy here, dipping the jet stream to the east.
03:46Ridge building.
03:46This ridge is actually going to build and gradually, eventually reorient the storm track from Colorado to Arkansas farther north
03:54later in the week.
03:55Let's go to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to take a look at this area here with a severe thunderstorm watch in progress.
04:01Hopefully all the boaters are aware of what's going on out there and can stay weather aware.
04:06But again, Thursday afternoon and evening, we have two moderate risk areas, two of them, eastern and central Wyoming into
04:13eastern Colorado.
04:14And then a second one, Kansas, Oklahoma, and the Ozark Plateau of southwest Missouri.
04:19So looking at the area around Wichita, Kansas, not a whole lot early on, kind of a sleeper.
04:24But watch this, into the evening.
04:26Here they come.
04:27Storms begin to break out near Sedgwick County, over top of the city.
04:30Flash flooding, damaging wind and hail become issues.
04:33Let's go to Denver, Colorado.
04:35And again, you're officially not under the watch right now, but you're on the edge of it.
04:39Tomorrow, scattered strong and severe storms.
04:42You'll probably end up under a severe thunderstorm watch.
04:44Damaging wind and hail will be your main concerns.
04:46Friday, not as much going on to the south.
04:48Let's go north.
04:49You can see some strong storms, eastern Montana, western South Dakota, western Nebraska, into Colorado, and western Kansas.
04:56All the while, scattered storms rumbling through parts of the plains, Missouri, Kansas, into the area around the Ohio Valley.
05:05Four to eight inches for some, near Kansas City to St. Louis.
05:08That's a lot of rain out there.
