00:17When a wicked person turns from the wickedness he has committed, and does what is just and right, he will
00:26preserve his life.
00:30For I am aware of my rebellious acts, I am forever conscious of my sin.
00:39Hide your face from my sins, wipe away all my guilt.
00:47The sacrifices God desires are a humble spirit, O God, a humble and repentant heart you will not reject.
01:01Dearly beloved brothers and sisters, the scripture moves us in sundry places to acknowledge and confess our many sins and
01:10wickedness.
01:12We should not justify nor hide them before the face of Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, but confess them with
01:20a humble, lowly, penitent and obedient heart.
01:24To the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy.
01:35Although we ought always to humbly acknowledge our sins before God, we should do this particularly when we assemble and
01:43meet together,
01:44to give thanks for the great benefits we have received at his hands.
01:48To give him most worthy praise, to hear his most holy word, and to ask those things which are truly
01:57necessary as well for the body as the soul.
02:02Therefore I pray and ask you, who are present here today, to accompany me with a pure heart and humble
02:09voice to the throne of the heavenly grace, as we say together.
02:16Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
02:23We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.
02:29We have offended against your holy laws.
02:32We have failed to do those things which we ought to have done, and we have done things which we
02:39ought not to have done.
02:44But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable sinners.
02:49Spare those, O God, who confess their faults.
02:53Restore those who are truly penitent, according to your promises declared to mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord.
03:03Grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to
03:12the glory of your holy name.
03:14Amen.
03:18Grant, we beseech you, merciful Lord, to your faithful people, pardon and peace,
03:24that they may be cleansed from all their sins, and serve you with a quiet mind, through Jesus Christ our
03:32Lord.
03:33Amen.
03:38Our Father, who is in heaven, hallowed be your name.
03:43Your kingdom come, your will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
03:49Give us this day our daily bread.
03:52Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
03:59Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
04:05For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever.
04:10Amen.
04:15O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing out your praise.
04:23O God, make speed to save us.
04:27O Lord, make haste to help us.
04:33Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
04:39as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
04:43world without end.
04:45Amen.
04:48Praise the Lord.
04:51The Lord's name be praised.
04:56Psalm 18
05:02He said,
05:03I love you, Lord, my source of strength.
05:07The Lord is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer.
05:11My God is my rocky summit, where I take shelter,
05:15my shield, the horn that saves me, and my refuge.
05:20I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
05:23and I was delivered from my enemies.
05:26The waves of death engulfed me,
05:29the currents of chaos overwhelmed me.
05:32The ropes of shale tightened around me,
05:35the snares of death trapped me.
05:39In my distress I called to the Lord,
05:41I cried out to my God.
05:44From his heavenly temple he heard my voice,
05:48he listened to my cry for help.
05:51The earth heaved and shook,
05:54the roots of the mountains trembled,
05:56they heaved because he was angry.
05:59Smoke ascended from his nose,
06:02fire devoured as it came from his mouth.
06:05He hurled down fiery coals.
06:09He made the sky sink as he descended,
06:12a thick cloud was under his feet.
06:15He mounted a winged angel and flew,
06:18he glided on the wings of the wind.
06:21He shrouded himself in darkness,
06:23in thick rain clouds.
06:26From the brightness in front of him
06:28came hail and fiery coals.
06:31The Lord thundered in the sky,
06:34the Most High shouted.
06:36He shot his arrows and scattered them,
06:39many lighting bolts and routed them.
06:43The depths of the sea were exposed,
06:45the inner regions of the world
06:47were uncovered by your battle cry,
06:49Lord,
06:50by the powerful breath from your nose.
06:54He reached down from above and took hold of me.
06:57He pulled me from the surging water.
07:00He rescued me from my strong enemy,
07:03from those who hate me,
07:04for they were too strong for me.
07:07They confronted me in my day of calamity,
07:11but the Lord helped me.
07:13He brought me out into a wide open place.
07:17He delivered me because he was pleased with me.
07:21The Lord repaid me for my godly deeds.
07:24He rewarded my blameless behavior,
07:27for I have obeyed the Lord's commands.
07:31I have not rebelled against my God,
07:34for I am aware of all his regulations,
07:37and I do not reject his rules.
07:40I was innocent before him
07:42and kept myself from sinning.
07:46The Lord rewarded me for my godly deeds.
07:49He took notice of my blameless behavior.
07:53You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful.
07:57You prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent.
08:01You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless,
08:06but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse.
08:11For you deliver oppressed people,
08:13but you bring down those who have a proud look.
08:18Indeed, you light my lamp, Lord.
08:21My God illuminates the darkness around me.
08:25Indeed, with your help,
08:27I can charge against an army.
08:29By my God's power,
08:32I can jump over a wall.
08:35The one true God acts in a faithful manner.
08:38The Lord's promise is reliable.
08:41He is a shield to all who take shelter in him.
08:47Indeed, who is God beside the Lord?
08:50Who is protector beside our God?
08:54The one true God gives me strength.
08:56He removes the obstacles in my way.
09:00He gives me the agility of a deer.
09:03He enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain.
09:07He trains my hands for battle.
09:10My arms can bend even the strongest bow.
09:15You give me your protective shield.
09:18Your right hand supports me.
09:20Your willingness to help enables me to prevail.
09:24You widen my path.
09:26My feet do not slip.
09:28I chase my enemies and catch them.
09:31I do not turn back until I wipe them out.
09:35I beat them to death.
09:37They fall at my feet.
09:39You give me strength for battle.
09:42You make my foes kneel before me.
09:45You make my enemies retreat.
09:47I destroy those who hate me.
09:51They cry out, but there is no one to help them.
09:55They cry out to the Lord, but he does not answer them.
09:58I grind them as fine wind-blown dust.
10:03I beat them underfoot like clay in the streets.
10:08You rescue me from a hostile army.
10:11You make me a leader of nations.
10:13People over whom I had no authority are now my subjects.
10:18When they hear of my exploits, they submit to me.
10:23Foreigners are powerless before me.
10:25Foreigners lose their courage.
10:27They shake with fear as they leave their strongholds.
10:31The Lord is alive.
10:33My protector is praiseworthy.
10:35The God who delivers me is exalted as king.
10:39The one true God completely vindicates me.
10:44He makes nations submit to me.
10:47He delivers me from my enemies.
10:50You snatch me away from those who attack me.
10:53You rescue me from violent men.
10:57So I will give you thanks before the nations, O Lord.
11:02I will sing praises to you.
11:04He gives his king magnificent victories.
11:08He is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and his descendants for ever.
11:15Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
11:19as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
11:23world without end.
11:25Amen.
11:31The Book of Wisdom, Chapter 17
11:35Great are your judgments, and hard to interpret.
11:40Therefore souls undisciplined went astray.
11:43For when lawless men had supposed that they held a holy nation in their power,
11:49they themselves, prisoners of darkness, bound in the fetters of a long night,
11:55close kept beneath their roofs,
11:58lay exiled from the eternal providence.
12:01For while they thought they were unseen in their secret sins,
12:05they were sundered one from another by a dark curtain of forgetfulness,
12:09stricken with terrible awe, and soared troubled by spectral forms.
12:16For neither did the dark recesses that held them guard them from fears.
12:21But sounds rushing down rang around them.
12:25Phantoms appeared, cheerless with unsmiling faces.
12:29No force of fire prevailed to give them light.
12:32Neither were the brightest flames of the stars strong enough
12:36to illumine that gloomy night.
12:39But only there appeared to them
12:41the glimmering of a fire self-kindled,
12:44full of fear.
12:46In terror they deemed the things which they saw
12:49to be worse than that sight,
12:51on which they could not gaze.
12:54They lay helpless, made a sport of magic,
12:59and a shameful rebuke of their vaunts of understanding.
13:05For those who promised to drive away terrors and troubles
13:08from a sick soul,
13:10these were themselves sick with a ludicrous fearfulness.
13:14For even if no troublesome thing frightened them,
13:18yet scared from the creeping of vermin and hissing of serpents,
13:22they perished, but very trembling,
13:25refusing even to look on the air,
13:28which could on no side be escaped.
13:31For wickedness, condemned by a witness within,
13:35is a cowardly thing.
13:37Being pressed hard by conscience
13:40always forecasts the worst lot.
13:43For fear is nothing but a surrender
13:46of the help which reason offers.
13:47From within the heart,
13:50the expectation of them being less,
13:52makes of greater account
13:54the ignorance of the cause
13:56that brings the torment.
13:58But they all through the night,
14:01which was powerless indeed,
14:03and which came upon them
14:05at the recesses of powerless Hades,
14:08all sleeping the same sleep,
14:10now haunted by monstrous apparitions,
14:13now paralysed by their soul's surrender.
14:17For fear sudden and unlooked for came upon them.
14:21So then every man,
14:23whoever it might be sinking down in his place,
14:27was kept shut up in that prison
14:29which was barred not with iron.
14:32For whether he were a husbandman or a shepherd,
14:35or a labourer whose toils were in the wilderness,
14:39he was overtaken,
14:41enduring that inevitable necessity.
14:44For with one chain of darkness
14:46they were all bound.
14:48Whether there were a whistling of wind,
14:51a melodious noise of birds,
14:53or a measured fall of water running violently,
14:57or a harsh cracking of rocks hurled down,
15:01or the swift course of animals
15:03bounding along unseen,
15:06the voice of wild beasts roaring harshly,
15:09or an echo rebounding
15:11from the hollows of the mountains,
15:14all these things paralysed them with terror.
15:18For the whole world beside
15:20was enlightened with clear light,
15:22being occupied with unhindered works,
15:25while over them alone
15:27was spread a heavy night,
15:29an image of the darkness
15:30that would afterwards receive them.
15:33But yet heavier than darkness
15:35were they to them very selves.
15:39This is the word of the Lord.
15:42Thanks be to God.
15:55Mary said,
15:56My soul exalts the Lord,
15:59and my spirit has begun to rejoice
16:01in God my Saviour,
16:03because He has looked
16:05upon the humble state of His servant.
16:09For from now on
16:11all generations will call me blessed,
16:13because He who is mighty
16:15has done great things for me,
16:17and holy is His name.
16:20From generation to generation
16:22He is merciful to those who fear Him.
16:27He has demonstrated power with His arm.
16:30He has scattered those
16:31whose pride wells up
16:33from the sheer arrogance of their hearts.
16:36He has brought down the mighty
16:38from their thrones,
16:39and has lifted up those of lowly position.
16:43He has filled the hungry with good things,
16:46and has sent the rich away empty.
16:49He has helped His servant Israel,
16:52remembering His mercy
16:54as He promised to our ancestors,
16:57to Abraham,
16:58and to his descendants for ever.
17:02Glory be to the Father,
17:04and to the Son,
17:05and to the Holy Spirit,
17:07as it was in the beginning,
17:09is now, and ever shall be,
17:11world without end.
17:13Amen.
17:19The Gospel according to St. Luke,
17:22chapter 22.
17:25The Lord said,
17:27Simon, Simon,
17:29behold,
17:30Satan asked to have all of you,
17:33that he might sift you as wheat.
17:36But I prayed for you,
17:37that your faith wouldn't fail.
17:40You,
17:41when once you have turned again,
17:43establish your brothers.
17:46He said to him,
17:47Lord,
17:48I am ready to go with you,
17:49both to prison,
17:50and to death.
17:53He said,
17:53I tell you,
17:54Peter,
17:55the rooster will by no means crow today,
17:58until you deny that you know me three times.
18:03He said to them,
18:04when I sent you out,
18:06without purse,
18:06wallet,
18:07or shoes,
18:08did you lack anything?
18:10They said,
18:11no,
18:11nothing.
18:12Then he said to them,
18:14but now,
18:15whoever has a purse,
18:16let him take it,
18:18and likewise a wallet.
18:20Whoever has none,
18:21let himself his cloak,
18:23and buy a sword.
18:24For I tell you,
18:25that this which is written,
18:27must be fulfilled in me.
18:29He was counted with transgressors,
18:32for that which concern me,
18:35has an end.
18:37They said,
18:38Lord,
18:39look,
18:39here are two swords.
18:41He said to them,
18:42that is enough.
18:44And he came out,
18:46and went as his custom was,
18:47to the Mount of Olives.
18:49His disciples followed.
18:51And when he was at the place,
18:53he said to them,
18:54pray that you do not enter,
18:56into temptation.
18:57And he withdrew from them,
18:59about a stone's throne,
19:01kneeling down,
19:02to pray,
19:03saying,
19:04Father,
19:05if you are willing,
19:06remove this cup from me.
19:09Nevertheless,
19:10not my will,
19:11but yours,
19:12be done.
19:14An angel,
19:15from heaven,
19:16appeared to him,
19:18strengthening him.
19:20Being in agony,
19:21he prayed,
19:22even more,
19:23earnestly.
19:24His sweat became like great drops of blood,
19:27falling to the ground.
19:30When he rose up from prayer,
19:32he came to the disciples,
19:33and found them sleeping,
19:35out of grief,
19:36and said to them,
19:37why do you sleep?
19:39Rise and pray,
19:40that you may not enter,
19:41into temptation.
19:43And while he was still speaking,
19:45behold,
19:46a multitude,
19:47and he who was called Judas,
19:49one of the twelve,
19:50leading them.
19:52He came near to Jesus,
19:53to kiss him.
19:55But Jesus said to him,
19:56Judas,
19:57will you betray the Son of Man,
19:59with a kiss?
20:01When those who were around him,
20:03saw what was about to happen,
20:04they said to him,
20:06Lord,
20:06shall we strike with the sword?
20:09And one of them,
20:10struck the servant,
20:10of the high priest,
20:12cutting off his right ear.
20:16While Jesus answered,
20:17let me at least do this.
20:20And he touched his ear,
20:22and healed him.
20:24Jesus turned to the chief priests,
20:26captains of the temple,
20:28elders who had come against him,
20:30and asked them,
20:32have you come against me,
20:33as against a robber,
20:36with swords and clubs?
20:38When I was with you,
20:39in the temple every day,
20:40you didn't stretch out,
20:42your hands against me then.
20:43But this is your hour,
20:45and the power of darkness.
20:48They seized him,
20:49and led him away,
20:51taking him into the high priest's house.
20:56But Peter followed from a distance.
20:59When they had kindled a fire,
21:01in the middle of the courtyard,
21:02and had sat down together,
21:04Peter was there among them.
21:07A servant,
21:08Gold,
21:08saw him,
21:09as he sat in the light,
21:10and looking at him intently,
21:12said,
21:12this man was also with him.
21:15He denied Jesus,
21:17saying,
21:18Woman,
21:18I do not know.
21:22This is the word of the Lord.
21:25Thanks be to God.
21:37Now,
21:38according to your word,
21:39Sovereign Lord,
21:40permit your servant to depart in peace.
21:43For my eyes have seen your salvation,
21:47that you have prepared,
21:49in the presence of all peoples,
21:52a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
21:55and for glory to your people Israel.
22:00Glory be to the Father,
22:01and to the Son,
22:02and to the Holy Spirit,
22:04as it was in the beginning,
22:06is now,
22:06and ever shall be,
22:08world without end.
22:10Amen.
22:15I believe in God the Father Almighty,
22:19maker of heaven and earth,
22:21and in Jesus Christ,
22:22his only Son,
22:23our Lord,
22:25who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
22:27born of the Virgin Mary,
22:30suffered unto Pontius Pilate,
22:33was crucified,
22:35dead,
22:35and buried.
22:36He descended into hell.
22:39On the third day,
22:40he rose again from the dead.
22:42He ascended into heaven,
22:44and is sitting at the right hand of God,
22:47the Father Almighty.
22:49From there,
22:50he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
22:54I believe in the Holy Spirit,
22:56the Holy Catholic Church,
22:58the communion of saints,
23:00the forgiveness of sins,
23:02the resurrection of the body,
23:04and the life everlasting.
23:07Amen.
23:12The Lord be with you,
23:15and with your spirit.
23:19Let us pray.
23:23Lord, have mercy upon us.
23:26Christ, have mercy upon us.
23:31Lord, have mercy upon us.
23:37Our Father,
23:39who is in heaven,
23:41holy is your name.
23:43May your kingdom come.
23:45May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
23:50Give us this day our daily bread.
23:53Forgive us our trespasses,
23:55as we forgive those who trespass against us.
24:00Lead us not into temptation,
24:02but deliver us from evil.
24:05For yours is the kingdom,
24:07the power and the glory,
24:10for ever and ever.
24:12Amen.
24:17O Lord,
24:18show your mercy upon us,
24:21and grant us your salvation.
24:26Protect and guide those in authority over us,
24:31and mercifully hear us when we call upon you.
24:36Endue your ministers with righteousness,
24:40and make your chosen people joyful.
24:45O Lord,
24:47save your people,
24:49and bless your inheritance.
24:53Give peace in our time,
24:55O Lord,
24:57because there is none other who fights for us,
25:00but only you,
25:01O God.
25:04O God,
25:05make clean our hearts within us,
25:08and take not your Holy Spirit from us.
25:20Let us pray.
25:23Lord,
25:24we beseech you
25:25to keep your household,
25:27the church,
25:28in continual godliness,
25:30that,
25:31through your protection,
25:32it may be free from all adversities,
25:35devotefully given to serve you in good works,
25:39to the glory of your name,
25:41through Jesus Christ,
25:43our Lord.
25:44Amen.
25:52O God,
25:54from whom all holy desires,
25:57all good counsels,
25:58and all just works proceed,
26:01give to your servants that peace,
26:03which the world cannot give,
26:06that our hearts may be set to obey your commandments,
26:09and also that,
26:11by you,
26:13we,
26:13being defended from the fear of our enemies,
26:16may pass our time in rest and quietness,
26:20through the merits of Jesus Christ,
