00:22Let us pray, praise honour and glory be to you O Christ who your
00:29faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews who were persecuting
00:35you and conspiring against your life. Root out, I beg you, from my heart all evil love
00:42of any creature. Grant that I may never prefer anything to you. May I always show the most
00:51perfect charity towards all men, especially those who trouble me. Pardon me, my Holy Redeemer,
00:59for having so often prepared vain and perishable things to you and for having for the sake
01:05of vile pleasures turned myself from you. Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ
01:12who ate the Passover with your disciples at Jerusalem according to the commandments of
01:18the law, giving them an example of humility and holy love by kneeling down on the ground
01:24and washing their feet, wiping them with a linen cloth. I pray that this your example
01:31may penetrate my soul, destroying thoroughly any haughtiness and pride within me. Give me
01:39O Lord the deepest humility that I may without delay perform the lowest ministry to all men.
01:46Give me perfect obedience that I may with complete diligence observe as your commandments whatever
01:52your appointed representatives may decide. Give me the most fervent charity that I may sincerely love
02:02all mankind. Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ who out of your unspeakable love gave us the
02:11sacrament of the Eucharist and in it given yourself to us with wondrous liberality so that you might remain
02:20with us even bodily unto the end of the world. Grant me I beg you O Lord an earnest longing
02:28and
02:29in kindle in my innermost soul an intense hunger for this adorable sacrament. Grant that when I go to
02:37the table of life I may receive you with chaste affection, complete humility and perfect purity of heart.
02:45May my soul so thirst for you now and so languish in your love that I may one day be
02:52found suitable to enjoy
02:54the delights of your eternal kingdom to the glory everlasting of your name. Praise honour and glory be to you
03:02O Christ who when
03:04you were about to leave the world commanded and comforted with words of unspeakable sweetness your disciples and most earnestly
03:13earnestly commended them in prayer to your Father. Most plainly showing how tenderly you love them and us who were
03:22to believe through their word. Grant that my heart may ever more relish your word and that I may find
03:31your words
03:32sweeter than honey to my taste. O that the spirit of that burning exhortation may so glide into my heart
03:40that I may be
03:42wholly transformed into your love. So direct all my ways O Lord my God that your holy will may be
03:50done in and by
03:51me for ever and ever.
03:54Praise and honour and glory be to you O Christ who went out with your disciples across the Kedron brook
04:01and
04:02came into the garden which you knew would be where you would be taken. May I entirely give up my
04:10will and always follow and
04:12love yours. May I for your honour and for the salvation of my brothers and sisters boldly endure any adversity
04:20and be willing even to lay down my life.
04:22If your divine providence should so ordain it.
04:28Praise honour and glory be to you O Christ who as your passion drew nigh
04:34began to be sorrowful and sad with a heavy heart and so that by transferring the
04:40weakness of all your members to yourself you might be able to console and strengthen them
04:45when they were in their time of fear at the approach of death. By this your own weakness which you
04:52have
04:52willingly taken upon you.
04:56Preserve me I beg you both from the immoderate sorrow and from foolish gladness.
05:03Grant that the grief which I have thus far endured may be for your glory and for the remission of
05:09my sins.
05:11Remove mercifully from me all distrust and unnecessary weakness and confirm and establish my soul whole in you.
05:22Praise and honour and glory be to you O Christ who fell prostrate on the ground and prayed to your
05:28Holy Father
05:29humbly offering your whole self to him saying your will be done.
05:35Give me grace in every necessity and trouble to fly to you in prayer and freely to resign and myself
05:43give myself up to your will.
05:47May I never unduly endeavour to escape from trouble but receive all things from your hand with a quiet mind
05:56and may I endure everything in meekness of spirit for your love.
06:01Amen.
06:05O Lord open our lips and our mouths shall sing your praise.
06:17O Lord open our lips and our mouths shall sing your praise.
06:34Amen.
06:47Christian music
06:48The people and the sheep of his master, who put your way to his district and king, and into his
07:01cross with praise, be thankful unto him and be full of his name.
07:12For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endures from generation to generation.
07:35Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning,
07:51is now and ever shall be.
07:56World without end, Amen.
08:05World without end, Amen.
08:11World without end, Amen.
08:15The poor and spade in his heart, there is no God.
08:23They are corrupt, and become a form in the world in their doings.
08:32There is none that's rule and rule, nor the tongue.
08:40The Lord you've turned from heaven upon the shielding of heaven,
08:47to see if there were any that would understand and speak of the Lord.
08:57But we have all gone out of the way.
09:01They are all together, which are a form in the world.
09:08There is none that's rule and rule, nor the tongue.
09:15Their throat is an open sepulcher, with their tongues have made it seem.
09:26The poison of ass is under their lips.
09:32Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.
09:37That leads us still to shed blood.
09:44Destruction and unhappiness is in their ways.
09:49And the way of peace and pain are strong.
09:54There is no fear of God before their eyes.
10:01And with the knowledge that they are born, such a child of mercy.
10:08Opportunity and unhappiness is in their life.
10:14And the way of peace and pain are praying that we are beyond.
10:28For God is in the generation of the nations.
10:37As for you, he hath made a walk at the council of the poor,
10:46because he knew that his trust in the Lord,
10:52who shall give salvation unto Israel out of sight,
10:59when the Lord serve at the captivity of his people.
11:06Then shall Jacob rejoice, and Israel shall be there.
11:34Amen.
11:45Amen.
12:02Since John's Gospel, Chapter 11.
12:10When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had been in the tomb four days already.
12:17Now, Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,
12:21so many of the Jewish people of the region had come to Martha and Mary
12:25to console them over the loss of their brother.
12:29So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him.
12:34But Mary stayed in the house.
12:38Martha said to Jesus,
12:39Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
12:43But even now, I know that whatever you ask from God, God will grant you.
12:50Jesus replied,
12:52Your brother will come back to life again.
12:55Martha said,
12:57I know he will come back to life again in the resurrection of the last day.
13:02Jesus said to her,
13:05I am the resurrection and the life.
13:08The one who believes in me will live even if he dies,
13:11and the one who lives and believes in me will never die.
13:16Do you believe this?
13:19She replied,
13:21Yes, Lord.
13:22I believe that you are the Christ,
13:24the Son of God who comes into the world.
13:29When she had said this,
13:31Martha went and called her sister,
13:33saying privately,
13:34The teacher is here and is asking for you.
13:42So when Mary heard this,
13:45she got up quickly and went to him.
13:48Now Jesus had not yet entered the village,
13:50but was still in the place where Martha had come to meet him.
13:55Then the people who were with Mary in the house,
13:58consoling her,
13:59saw her get up and move quickly,
14:03going out.
14:05They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
14:10But when Mary came to the place where Jesus was and saw him,
14:14she fell at his feet and said to him,
14:17Lord,
14:19if only you had been here,
14:20my brother would not have died.
14:23When Jesus saw her weeping,
14:25and the people who had come with her weeping,
14:28he was intensely moved in spirit
14:30and greatly distressed.
14:33He asked,
14:35Where have you laid him?
14:37They replied,
14:38Lord, come and see.
14:40Jesus wept.
14:43Thus the people who had come to mourn said,
14:46Look how much he must have loved him.
14:50But some of them said,
14:52This is the man who caused the blind man to see.
14:55Couldn't he have done something to keep Lazarus from dying?
15:03Jesus,
15:04intensely moved again,
15:06came to the tomb.
15:07Now it was in a cave,
15:09and a stone had been placed across the entrance.
15:13Jesus said,
15:14Take away the stone.
15:17Martha,
15:18the sister of the deceased,
15:19replied,
15:20Lord,
15:21by this time the body will have a bad smell,
15:23because he has been buried four days.
15:28Jesus replied,
15:30Didn't I tell you
15:31that if only you would believe,
15:32you would see the glory of God?
15:35And so they took away the stone.
15:38Jesus looked up and said,
15:40Father,
15:41I thank you that you have listened to me.
15:44I know you always listen to me,
15:47but I've said this
15:48for the sake of the crowd standing here,
15:51that they may believe that you sent me.
15:55When he had said this,
15:57he cried out in a loud voice,
16:00Lazarus,
16:00come out.
16:03The one who had died came out,
16:05his feet and hands tied with strips of cloth,
16:09and the cloth wrapped around his face.
16:12Jesus said to them,
16:14Unwrap him and let him go.
16:19Then many of the people
16:20who had come with Mary
16:21and seen the things that Jesus did,
16:24believed in him.
16:26But some returned to the Pharisees
16:29and reported to them
16:30what Jesus had done.
16:35This is the word of the Lord.
16:37Thanks be to God.
16:48In this 11th chapter,
16:50it is related how the death of Jesus
16:53was finally determined upon
16:55on the occasion of his raising Lazarus.
17:00The 10 chapters preceding
17:02have served to indicate
17:04how Jesus revealed himself
17:06to the Jews in every aspect
17:09that was likely to win faith.
17:11How each fresh revelation
17:13only served to embitter them
17:15against him,
17:17hardening their unbelief
17:18into a hopeless hostility.
17:23In these few pages,
17:24John has given us
17:25a wonderfully compressed
17:26but vivid summary
17:27of the miracles
17:28and conversations of Jesus,
17:31serving to reveal
17:32his true character and work.
17:36Jesus has shown himself
17:37as the light of the world,
17:39and yet the darkness
17:41did not understand him.
17:42As the shepherd of the sheep,
17:44but they will not listen
17:45to his voice.
17:47As the life of men,
17:48but they will not come to him,
17:50to have life.
17:53As the impersonation
17:54of the love of God
17:55to come to dwell among men,
17:57sharing their sorrows
17:59and their joys.
18:00But the men hate him even more.
18:03The more love he shows,
18:05the more they hate.
18:07As the truth
18:08that could make men free,
18:10they choose to serve
18:11the father of lies
18:12and to do his work.
18:14And now,
18:15as he reveals himself
18:17as the resurrection
18:17and the life,
18:19possessed of the key
18:20which is inaccessible
18:21to any other,
18:22of the power most essential
18:24to man,
18:25they resolve upon his death.
18:30There is something
18:32appropriate about this.
18:34his love for his friends
18:36drew him back
18:37at the risk of his life
18:38to the neighbourhood
18:39of Jerusalem.
18:41It is as if
18:42to his eye,
18:44Lazarus represented
18:45all of his friends
18:47and he feels constrained
18:49to come out
18:50of his safe retreat
18:51at the risk
18:52of his own life
18:53and deliver them
18:55from the power of death.
18:57that this was
18:59in the mind
18:59of Jesus himself
19:01is clear.
19:03When he expressed
19:05his resolve
19:05to go to his friends
19:07in Bethany,
19:08he used an expression
19:09which shows
19:10that he anticipated
19:12danger,
19:13which at once
19:14suggested to his disciples
19:15that he was running
19:16a great risk.
19:20let us go
19:21not to Bethany
19:23but into
19:25Judea again.
19:28His disciples
19:30said to him,
19:30Master,
19:32the Jews
19:32lately sought
19:33to stone you
19:34and yet you want
19:34to go there again.
19:36The answer of Jesus
19:38to this protest
19:39is significant.
19:41Are there not
19:42twelve hours
19:43in the day?
19:44That is to say,
19:46has not every man
19:47his allotted time
19:48to work,
19:49his day of light
19:50in which he can walk
19:52and work
19:53and which no danger
19:55or calamity
19:55could ever shorten.
19:58Can men
19:59make the sun
19:59set an hour
20:00earlier
20:01or an hour
20:02later?
20:03Neither
20:04can they shorten
20:05by one hour
20:06the day of light
20:08and toil
20:09that your God
20:10has appointed
20:11to you.
20:13Wicked men
20:14may grudge
20:15that God's
20:16shun
20:16sun
20:17shines
20:18on the fields
20:18of their enemies
20:19and prospers
20:20them.
20:23But their envy
20:24cannot darken
20:25nor shorten
20:26the course
20:26of the sun.
20:28So many wicked men
20:29grudge
20:30that I work
20:31these miracles
20:32and I do
20:32these deeds
20:33of my loving
20:33father
20:34but I am
20:36as far above
20:37their reach
20:37as the sun
20:38in heaven
20:39and until I
20:40have run
20:41my appointed
20:41course
20:42their envy
20:43and anger
20:44is impotent.
20:47The real danger
20:48begins when a man
20:49tries to prolong
20:50his day
20:51to turn night
20:52into day
20:53and the danger
20:54begins
20:55when a man
20:56through fear
20:57turns aside
20:57from duty
20:58and then
21:00loses the only
21:01true guide
21:01and light
21:02in his life.
21:04A man's
21:05knowledge
21:05of duty
21:06or God's
21:07will
21:07is the only
21:08true light
21:09he has to
21:10guide him
21:10in life.
21:11That duty
21:12God has
21:13already measured
21:14to each man
21:15his twelve
21:16hours.
21:17Only by
21:18following duty
21:19into all hazards
21:20and confusion
21:21can you live out
21:22your full term.
21:24If on the other
21:25hand you try
21:26to extend
21:27your term
21:28you find
21:29that the sun
21:30of duty
21:30has been
21:31set already
21:32and you have
21:33no power
21:34to bring light
21:35back to your path.
21:38A man
21:38may indeed
21:39preserve his
21:40life on earth
21:41for a year
21:42or two
21:42by declining
21:44dangerous duties
21:46but his day
21:47is done
21:47and his
21:48heads forth
21:49only stumbling
21:50about on the earth
21:51in the outer
21:52cold and
21:52darkness
21:54he had better
21:55by far
21:56have gone
21:56home to God
21:58and been
21:58quietly sleeping
21:59better by far
22:01to have acknowledged
22:02that his day
22:03was done
22:03and his night
22:04coming
22:04not striving
22:06to wake up
22:07and work on
22:09if
22:10through the fear
22:11of danger
22:11through
22:12straightened
22:12circumstance
22:13of serious
22:14inconvenience
22:15you refuse
22:16to go
22:17where God
22:19i.e.
22:20where duty
22:20calls you
22:21you make
22:22a terrible
22:23mistake
22:24instead of
22:25thereby
22:25preserving
22:26your life
22:26you lose
22:27it
22:27instead of
22:28prolonging
22:29your day
22:29of usefulness
22:30brightness
22:31and comfort
22:32you lose
22:33the very light
22:34of life
22:34and stumble
22:36on thereafter
22:36through life
22:37without a guide
22:38making
22:39making innumerable
22:40false steps
22:41as the result
22:42of that
22:42first false
22:43step
22:44in which
22:45you turned
22:45in the wrong
22:46direction
22:46not dead
22:48indeed
22:48but living
22:50as the very
22:50ghost of your
22:51former self
22:52on this side
22:53of the grave
22:55miserable
22:56profitless
22:57and cursed
23:01John
23:02it seems
23:02had two
23:03reasons
23:03for recording
23:04this miracle
23:06firstly
23:06because it
23:07exhibited
23:08Jesus
23:08as the
23:09resurrection
23:09and the
23:10life
23:10and secondly
23:12because it
23:12more distinctly
23:13separated
23:14the whole
23:14body of the
23:15Jews
23:15into believers
23:17and unbelievers
23:20but there are
23:21two small
23:22points
23:22which we
23:23might consider
23:23before we
23:24turn to the
23:25main theme
23:28first
23:29we read
23:30that
23:30when Jesus
23:31saw Mary
23:32weeping
23:32and the
23:33Jews
23:34also
23:34weeping
23:34which came
23:35with her
23:35he groaned
23:37in spirit
23:38and was
23:38troubled
23:39before
23:40weeping
23:40himself
23:42but why
23:43did he
23:43show such
23:44emotion
23:46the Jews
23:47who saw him
23:47weep
23:47supposed that
23:48his tears
23:48were prompted
23:49as were
23:50their own
23:50by a selfish
23:52sorrow for
23:52their loss
23:53and sympathy
23:54for the
23:55sisters
23:56do I
23:57see a woman
23:58like Mary
23:59throwing himself
24:00at his feet
24:01breaking into
24:02a passion
24:03of tears
24:03and crying
24:04with an intense
24:05regret
24:05if not
24:07with that
24:07tinge
24:08of reproach
24:09Lord
24:10if you
24:10had only
24:10been here
24:11my brother
24:11would not
24:12have died
24:14was it
24:14enough
24:15to bring
24:15tears
24:15to the
24:16eyes
24:16of
24:17harder
24:17niches
24:18than
24:18our
24:18Lord's
24:21but the
24:21care
24:22with which
24:22John
24:23describes
24:23the
24:24disturbance
24:24of his
24:25spirit
24:25the
24:26emphasis
24:26he lays
24:27upon
24:27his
24:28inward
24:28groaning
24:29the
24:29notice
24:30he takes
24:30of the
24:30account
24:31of the
24:31Jews
24:32give
24:32off his
24:33tears
24:33all seem
24:35to indicate
24:36that something
24:37more than
24:38ordinary
24:38grief or
24:39sympathy
24:39was the
24:40font
24:41of these
24:41tears
24:42the cause
24:43of the
24:43distress
24:44which could
24:44vent itself
24:45only in
24:46audible
24:46groans
24:48he was
24:49indeed in
24:50sympathy
24:50with the
24:51mourners
24:51and felt
24:52for them
24:52but there
24:53was that
24:54in the
24:54whole scene
24:55with which
24:55he had
24:56no sympathy
24:57there was
24:58none of
24:59that feeling
24:59he required
25:00his disciples
25:01to show
25:02at his
25:02own death
25:04no rejoicing
25:05that one
25:06more had
25:06gone to
25:06the father
25:08there was
25:09a forgetfulness
25:10of the
25:11most essential
25:11facts of
25:12death
25:12an unbelief
25:14which seemed
25:15entirely to
25:16separate the
25:16crowd of
25:17wailing
25:17people
25:18from the
25:19light and
25:19the life
25:20of God's
25:21very presence
25:23it was the
25:24darkness
25:25between God
25:25and his
25:26creation
25:26that gave
25:27room for
25:28and was
25:29filled with
25:30their weeping
25:31and wailing
25:32over their
25:32dead
25:34it was the
25:35deeper anguish
25:35into which
25:36mourners are
25:37plunged by
25:38looking upon
25:39death
25:39as extinction
25:40and by
25:42supposing that
25:43death separates
25:44from God
25:44and from
25:45life
25:46instead of
25:47taking us
25:48closer to
25:49God
25:49and more
25:50abundant
25:50life
25:51it was
25:52this
25:53which caused
25:54Jesus to
25:54groan
25:56he could not
25:57bear the
25:57evidence that
25:58even the
25:58best of
25:59God's
25:59children
25:59do not
26:00believe in
26:01God as
26:01greater than
26:02death
26:02and in
26:03death as
26:04being ruled
26:04by God
26:09God as
26:10God as
26:11God as
26:11Christ's
26:12belief in
26:13immortality
26:14to all
26:15sound
26:15belief in
26:17immortality
26:17it was
26:19Christ's
26:19sense of
26:20God
26:21his
26:22uninterrupted
26:23consciousness
26:24of God
26:24his distinct
26:25knowledge
26:25that God
26:26the loving
26:27father is
26:28the existence
26:28in whom
26:29all live
26:30it was
26:31this which
26:32made it
26:33impossible for
26:33Christ to
26:34think of
26:35death as
26:35extinction or
26:37separation from
26:38God
26:38for one who
26:40had consciously
26:41lived in
26:42God to be
26:43separated from
26:44God was
26:45impossible
26:46for one who
26:48was bound to
26:49God by love
26:49to drop out of
26:51that love into
26:51nothingness or
26:53desolation was
26:54inconceivable
26:56his constant
26:58and absolute
26:58sense of
26:59God gave
27:00him an
27:01unquestioning
27:02sense of
27:02immortality
27:04we cannot
27:05conceive of
27:06Christ having
27:07any shadow
27:08of doubt of
27:08a life beyond
27:09death
27:10if we ask
27:12why it was
27:12so we
27:13further see
27:14that it was
27:15because it
27:15was impossible
27:16for him to
27:18doubt the
27:18existence of
27:19God the
27:20ever-living
27:21God the
27:22ever-loving
27:26this is the
27:27order or
27:28conviction in
27:29us all
27:29it is vain
27:31to try and
27:33build up a
27:34faith in
27:35immortality
27:35by natural
27:36arguments
27:37or even by
27:39what scripture
27:40records
27:41as the great
27:43preacher
27:43Horace Bushnell
27:44once said
27:45in truth
27:46the faith of
27:48immortality
27:48depends on
27:50the sense of
27:50its begotten
27:51not on an
27:52argument for
27:53it to be
27:54concluded
27:56this sense of
27:57immortality is
27:58begotten when
27:59a man is
28:00truly born
28:00again
28:01instinctively
28:02feeling himself
28:03an air of
28:05things beyond
28:06this world
28:06into which
28:07his natural
28:08birth has
28:09ushered him
28:09when he
28:11begins to
28:11live in
28:12God
28:13when the
28:14things of
28:15God are
28:16the things
28:16amongst
28:17which and
28:18for which
28:19he lives
28:20when his
28:21spirit is in
28:22daily and
28:22free communication
28:23with God
28:24when he
28:25partakes of
28:25the divine
28:26nature
28:26finding his
28:28joy in
28:29self-sacrifice
28:30and love
28:30in whose
28:32purposes and
28:32dispositions
28:33can be
28:35exercised in
28:36any world
28:36where men
28:37are
28:38and with
28:39which death
28:40has no
28:41conceivable
28:42relation
28:43but on
28:44the other
28:44hand
28:45for a man
28:46to live
28:46for the
28:46world
28:47to steep
28:48his soul
28:48in carnal
28:49pleasures
28:50blinding
28:51himself
28:51by highly
28:52esteeming
28:53what only
28:53belongs to
28:54the earth
28:55for such
28:56a man
28:56to expect
28:57to have
28:58any
28:58intelligent
28:58sense
28:59or perception
29:00of immortality
29:02is clearly
29:03out of the
29:04question
29:12another
29:12question
29:13however
29:14is sure
29:14to be
29:15asked
29:15at this
29:16point
29:17what was
29:18the
29:18experience
29:19of
29:19Lazarus
29:20during
29:20these
29:21four
29:21days
29:23to
29:23speculate
29:24on what
29:24he may
29:24have
29:25seen
29:25heard
29:26or
29:26experienced
29:27to trace
29:29the flight
29:29of his
29:30soul
29:30through the
29:30gates
29:31of death
29:31to the
29:32presence
29:32of God
29:33may
29:34perhaps
29:34seem
29:35to some
29:35as foolish
29:36as to go
29:37with those
29:37curious
29:38Jews
29:38who flocked
29:39out to
29:39Bethany
29:40to set
29:41eyes
29:41upon this
29:42marvel
29:42a man
29:43who had
29:44passed
29:44into the
29:45unseen
29:45world
29:46and yet
29:46returned
29:48but although
29:49no doubt
29:50good and
29:51great purposes
29:52are served
29:53by the
29:53obscurity
29:54that involves
29:55death
29:55our
29:56endeavours
29:57to penetrate
29:58the gloom
29:59and catch
30:00some sort
30:00of glimpse
30:01of a
30:01life
30:01we must
30:02shortly
30:03enter
30:03cannot
30:05be judged
30:05altogether
30:06idle
30:09unfortunately
30:09however
30:10there is
30:10little
30:10we can
30:11learn
30:11from
30:11Lazarus
30:13two
30:14English
30:14poets
30:15the one
30:16fitted to
30:16deal with
30:17this
30:17subject
30:17by an
30:18imagination
30:18that seems
30:19capable
30:20of seeing
30:21and describing
30:22whatever
30:22man can
30:23experience
30:24the other
30:25by an
30:25insight
30:26that
30:26instinctively
30:27apprehends
30:28spiritual
30:28things
30:29and
30:30both
30:31by
30:31reverential
30:31faith
30:32have
30:33taken
30:33quite
30:33opposite
30:34views
30:34of the
30:34effect
30:35of death
30:35and
30:36resurrection
30:36upon
30:37Lazarus
30:39the one
30:40describes him
30:41as living
30:42henceforth
30:42a dazed
30:43life
30:44as if his
30:45soul
30:45were elsewhere
30:46as if his
30:47eye
30:47dazzled
30:48with the
30:49glory beyond
30:50could not
30:50adjust itself
30:51to the
30:51things on
30:52earth
30:53he is out
30:54of sympathy
30:55with the
30:55ordinary
30:56interests of
30:56men
30:57and seems
30:58to live at
30:58cross purposes
30:59with everything
31:00around him
31:03this was a
31:04very inviting
31:05view of the
31:06matter for a
31:06poet
31:07but here was
31:08an opportunity
31:09of putting in
31:10a concrete
31:11way
31:11an experience
31:13unique
31:14it was a
31:15task worthy
31:16of the highest
31:17poetic genius
31:18to describe
31:19what would be
31:21the sensations
31:22thoughts and
31:23ways of a
31:24man who had
31:25passed through
31:25death
31:26and seen
31:27things
31:27hitherto
31:28invisible
31:29and been
31:31exalted
31:31above measure
31:32becoming
31:33certified by
31:34face to face
31:35vision of
31:36all that we
31:37can only hope
31:38for and
31:38believe in
31:39and had yet
31:41been restored
31:42to earth
31:45this opportunity
31:46of contrasting
31:48the paltriness
31:48of earth
31:49with the
31:50sublimity
31:51and reality
31:53of the
31:54unseen
31:54was too
31:55great to be
31:56resisted
31:58the opportunity
32:00of flouting
32:00our professed
32:01faith
32:01by exhibiting
32:02the difference
32:03between it
32:04and the real
32:05assurance
32:05by showing
32:06the utter
32:07want of
32:07sympathy
32:08between one
32:09who had
32:09seen
32:09and all
32:10others
32:10on earth
32:11who had
32:11only believed
32:13this opportunity
32:15was too
32:15inviting to
32:16leave room
32:16for a poet
32:17to ask
32:18whether or not
32:19there was a
32:19basis in fact
32:20for this
32:21contrast
32:22whether it
32:23was likely
32:23that in
32:24point of
32:25fact
32:25Lazarus
32:26did conduct
32:27himself
32:27when restored
32:28to earth
32:29as one
32:30who had been
32:31plunged into
32:31the full light
32:32and thronging
32:33of the unseen
32:34world
32:36when we consider
32:38the actual
32:38requirements of
32:40the case
32:40it can only seem
32:42highly unlikely
32:43that Lazarus
32:44had been recalled
32:45from a clear
32:46consciousness
32:46and knowledge
32:47of the heavenly
32:48life
32:49unlikely
32:50that he should
32:51be summoned
32:51to live on earth
32:52with a mind
32:53too large
32:54for the uses
32:54of earth
32:56overcharged
32:57with a knowledge
32:58that he could not
32:58even begin
32:59to think
33:00of using
33:01as a poor man
33:02suddenly enriched
33:04way beyond
33:05his ability
33:06to spend
33:06and therefore
33:08as a result
33:09only confused
33:11and stupefied
33:13in all probability
33:15he had
33:16nothing to reveal
33:17for as
33:19Jesus said
33:19he came
33:21to awake
33:22him
33:22from sleep
33:24had he learned
33:25anything of the
33:26spirit world
33:26it would have
33:27been left
33:28behind
33:29the burden
33:30of a secret
33:31which all men
33:32craved to know
33:33which the scribes
33:34and lawyers
33:35from Jerusalem
33:36would do all
33:36in their power
33:37to elicit
33:37from him
33:38would have
33:39damaged his mind
33:40and depressed
33:41his life
33:42his rising
33:43would be as
33:44the awaking
33:45of a man
33:46from a deep sleep
33:47scarcely knowing
33:48what he was doing
33:49tripping and
33:51stumbling in the
33:51grey clothes
33:52and wondering
33:53at the crowd
33:55what Mary
33:56and Martha
33:57would prize
33:58would be the
33:58unchanged love
33:59that shone
34:00in his face
34:01when he saw them
34:02the same familiar
34:03tones and endearments
34:05that showed
34:06how little
34:06change
34:07death brings
34:08our little
34:09rupture of
34:10affection
34:10or of anything
34:11good
34:11how truly
34:13he remained
34:14their own
34:15dearest brother
34:21to our Lord
34:22himself
34:22it would no doubt
34:24be a grace
34:24that so shortly
34:25before his own
34:26death
34:27and in a spot
34:29so near
34:29where he himself
34:30would be buried
34:31he should be
34:32encouraged
34:33by seeing a man
34:34who had been
34:35three days
34:36in the grave
34:36rise
34:37at his word
34:39the narrative
34:40of his last
34:41hours reveals
34:42that such
34:43encouragement
34:43was not
34:44useless
34:45but for us
34:46it has a still
34:47more helpful
34:48significance
34:50death
34:51is a subject
34:52of universal
34:53concern
34:54every one of us
34:55has to deal
34:56with it
34:57and in the
34:58presence of it
34:58every man
35:00feels helpless
35:02nowhere
35:02nowhere
35:03do we come
35:04so close
35:05to the limit
35:05and end
35:06of our power
35:06as at the
35:07door of a
35:08vault
35:09nowhere is the
35:10weakness of man
35:11so keenly felt
35:13there is the
35:14clay but who
35:15will find the
35:15spirit that
35:16dwelt in it
35:18Jesus
35:19knows no such
35:20sense of weakness
35:21believing in the
35:23fatherly and
35:23undying love
35:24of his eternal
35:25God
35:26he knows that
35:27death cannot
35:27harm
35:28still less
35:29destroy the
35:30children of
35:30God
35:31in this belief
35:33he commands
35:34back to the
35:34body the soul
35:35of Lazarus
35:36through the ear
35:38of the dead
35:38and laid aside
35:39body
35:40he calls to
35:41his friend
35:41and bids him
35:43return from
35:44the unseen
35:45world
35:46surely we
35:47also may say
35:48with himself
35:49we are glad
35:50that he was
35:51not with
35:51Lazarus in
35:52his sickness
35:53that we
35:54might have
35:55this proof
35:55that not
35:56even death
35:57carries the
35:58friend of
35:58Christ beyond
35:59his reach
36:00and power
36:04surely there
36:04is no one
36:05amongst us
36:06who can look
36:06upon this
36:07scene with
36:08indifference
36:08for we all
36:10have to die
36:11to sink in
36:12utter weakness
36:13past all
36:14the strength
36:14of our own
36:15past all
36:16friendly health
36:17of those
36:18around us
36:19of any
36:20doctors
36:21or whatever
36:21research or
36:23whatever has
36:24been trained
36:25upon us
36:26it must always
36:28remain a
36:29trying thing
36:29to die
36:30and in the
36:31time of our
36:32health we may
36:33say since
36:34nature's works
36:35be good and
36:36death serves
36:37as nature's
36:38work why
36:39should we
36:40fear to die
36:41but no
36:42argument would
36:43make us
36:43indifference to
36:45the question
36:45at death
36:47are we to
36:48be extinguished
36:49or to live
36:50on in a
36:51happier
36:52fuller life
36:55if a man
36:56dies in
36:56thoughtlessness
36:57with no
36:58forecasting
36:59or foreboding
37:01of what is
37:02to follow
37:03he can give
37:04no stronger
37:04proof of
37:05thoughtlessness
37:07if a man
37:08faces death
37:09cheerfully
37:09through natural
37:10courage
37:11he can
37:12punish no
37:13stronger
37:13evidence
37:13of courage
37:15if he dies
37:17calmly and
37:17hopefully in
37:18faith
37:19surely this
37:20is faith's
37:21highest expression
37:22if it is
37:24really true
37:24that Jesus
37:25did raise
37:26Lazarus
37:27then a world
37:28of depression
37:29fear and
37:30grief is
37:31lifted from
37:32the heart
37:32of man
37:33that very
37:34assurance is
37:35given to
37:36us which
37:36we most of
37:37all need
37:38and so far
37:40as we can
37:40see it is
37:41our own
37:41imbecility of
37:42mind that
37:43prevents us
37:44from accepting
37:45this assurance
37:45and living the
37:47joy and
37:47strength it
37:48brings
37:50if Lazarus
37:52was raised
37:53by Christ
37:54then Christ
37:55has that
37:55power in
37:56which we
37:57can safely
37:57trust
37:58and life
37:59is a thing
38:00of permanence
38:00and joy
38:02if a man
38:03cannot determine
38:04for himself
38:05whether this
38:05actually did
38:06happen or
38:07not
38:07he must
38:09think
38:09I fear
38:11that the
38:11fault is
38:12his
38:13and that he
38:14is defrauding
38:14himself of
38:15one of the
38:15clearest
38:16guiding lights
38:17and the
38:17most powerful
38:19determining
38:19influence
38:20we can
38:20ever have
38:23the miracle
38:24is perhaps
38:25more significant
38:26than the
38:27explanation
38:27of it
38:30the act
38:31which embodies
38:32and gives
38:33fact to a
38:34principle
38:35is its best
38:36exposition
38:38but the main
38:39teaching of the
38:40miracle is
38:41announced in
38:42the words of
38:43Jesus
38:45I am the
38:46resurrection
38:47and the
38:47life
38:49in this
38:50statement
38:50two truths
38:51are contained
38:53one
38:53that
38:54resurrection
38:55and life
38:55are not
38:56only in the
38:57future
38:57but also
38:58present
38:58and two
39:00that they
39:01become
39:01ours
39:02by union
39:03with
39:03Christ
39:07resurrection
39:08and life
39:09are not
39:09blessings
39:10laid up
39:10for us
39:11in a
39:11remote
39:12future
39:12they are
39:13courage
39:16when Jesus
39:17said to
39:17Martha
39:17your brother
39:18will rise
39:19again
39:19she answered
39:20I know
39:21he will
39:21rise again
39:22in the
39:23resurrection
39:23of the
39:24last day
39:25meaning
39:26that this
39:27was some
39:27small
39:28consolation
39:29to her
39:30right there
39:31and then
39:31there was
39:33her brother
39:33lying in
39:34the tomb
39:35dead
39:35and there
39:36he would
39:36lie for
39:37years
39:39centuries
39:39millennia
39:40dead
39:43no more
39:44to move
39:44about
39:44in the
39:45home
39:45she loved
39:45for his
39:46sake
39:46no more
39:48to exchange
39:48with her
39:49one word
39:49or look
39:52what comfort
39:54did the
39:55vague
39:55and remote
39:56hope of
39:56reunion
39:57after long
39:58millennia
39:59of untold
40:00change
40:00bring
40:01what comfort
40:02is to
40:03sustain her
40:04throughout
40:04her own
40:05remaining
40:05life
40:07when parents
40:08lose the
40:09children
40:09whom they
40:10could not
40:10bear to
40:11have for
40:11a day
40:11out of
40:12their
40:12sight
40:12whom they
40:13had longed
40:14for
40:14if they
40:14were absent
40:15an hour
40:16beyond
40:16their time
40:17it is no
40:18doubt
40:18some comfort
40:19to know
40:19that one
40:20day
40:20they will
40:20again
40:21hold them
40:22next to
40:22their chest
40:24but this
40:24is not
40:25the comfort
40:25that Christ
40:26gives
40:26Marple
40:27he comforts
40:28her
40:29not by
40:29pointing out
40:30to her
40:31a far
40:32off event
40:32which was
40:33vague
40:33and remote
40:34but to
40:35his own
40:36living
40:36person
40:37whom she
40:38knew
40:38saw
40:39and
40:39thrusted
40:41and he
40:41gave her
40:42that
40:43assurance
40:43that in
40:45him
40:45was both
40:46resurrection
40:46and life
40:47therefore
40:48all who
40:49belonged to
40:50him
40:50were uninjured
40:51by death
40:52and had
40:53in him
40:53a truly
40:54present
40:55and continuous
40:57life
41:05Christ
41:05then does
41:06not think
41:06of
41:07immortality
41:08in the
41:08way that
41:08we do
41:10the thought
41:10of immortality
41:11is with
41:12him involved
41:13in and
41:14absorbed
41:14by the
41:15idea
41:15of life
41:16life
41:17is a
41:18present
41:18thing
41:19and its
41:20continuance
41:21a matter
41:22of course
41:23when life
41:24is full
41:25and abundant
41:25and glad
41:27the present
41:28is enough
41:28and the past
41:29and future
41:30are unthought
41:31of
41:31it is life
41:33therefore
41:33rather than
41:34immortality
41:35that Christ
41:36speaks of
41:37a present
41:38thing
41:39and not
41:40a future
41:40one
41:41good
41:42an expansion
41:43of now
41:44which
41:45necessarily
41:46carries with it
41:47the idea
41:48of permanence
41:50eternal
41:51life
41:52he defines
41:53not as a
41:54future
41:54continuance
41:55to be
41:55measured
41:56by ages
41:57but
41:58as a
41:59present
41:59life
42:00to be
42:01measured
42:01by its
42:02depth
42:03it is
42:03the quality
42:04but not
42:05the length
42:05of life
42:06that he
42:06looks at
42:07life
42:08prolonged
42:09without being
42:09deepened
42:10by union
42:11with the
42:11living God
42:12is no
42:13bone
42:14life
42:15with God
42:15in God
42:16must be
42:17immortal
42:19life
42:20without
42:20God
42:20he does
42:21not
42:21call
42:21life
42:22at
42:22all
42:26in
42:27evidence
42:27of this
42:28present
42:29continued
42:29life
42:30Lazarus
42:31was called
42:31back
42:32and shown
42:32to be
42:33still
42:33alive
42:34in him
42:35the truth
42:36of Christ's
42:36words
42:37was
42:38exemplified
42:39he that
42:40believes
42:40in me
42:41though he
42:41were dead
42:42yet shall
42:42live
42:43and whoever
42:44lives
42:44and believes
42:45in me
42:45shall
42:45never
42:46die
42:48he will
42:48doubtless
42:49like all
42:49men
42:50undergo
42:50the
42:51change
42:51that
42:51we
42:51call
42:52death
42:52he will
42:53become
42:54detached
42:54from the
42:55present
42:55earthly
42:56scene
42:56but his
42:57life in
42:58Christ
42:58will suffer
42:59no such
42:59interruption
43:02dissolution
43:02may pass
43:03on his
43:03worldly
43:04body
43:04but not
43:05on his
43:05life
43:06his life
43:07is laid
43:08and hid
43:08with Christ
43:09in God
43:09it is united
43:11to the
43:12unfailing
43:12source
43:13of any
43:14and all
43:15existence
43:17such life
43:18now abundant
43:19and ever
43:20more
43:20abiding
43:21Christ
43:22affords
43:22to all
43:23who believe
43:23in him
43:24to Martha
43:25he intimates
43:27that he has
43:27the power
43:28to raise
43:28the dead
43:28that this
43:30power
43:30is so much
43:31his own
43:32that he needs
43:33no instrument
43:33or means
43:34to apply
43:35it
43:35that he
43:36himself
43:36as he
43:37stood
43:37before her
43:38contained
43:39all that
43:39was necessary
43:40for resurrection
43:41and life
43:43he suggests
43:44this
43:45but he also
43:46suggests
43:46much more
43:47than this
43:48that he had
43:49the power
43:50to raise
43:50the dead
43:51it would
43:51no doubt
43:52revive
43:53the heart
43:54of Martha
43:55to hear
43:55but what
43:56guarantee
43:57what hope
43:58was there
43:59that he
44:00would
44:00in fact
44:01exercise
44:01that power
44:05and so
44:06Christ
44:06does not
44:07say
44:07I have
44:08the power
44:08but
44:09I am
44:11is anyone
44:12is Lazarus
44:13joined to
44:14me
44:14has he
44:15attached
44:16himself
44:16confidingly
44:17to my
44:18person
44:19then
44:20whatever
44:20I am
44:21finds
44:22exercise
44:22in him
44:23it is
44:25not only
44:25that I
44:26have this
44:26power
44:26to exercise
44:27on whoever
44:28I may
44:29but I
44:30am
44:30this power
44:31so that
44:32if he
44:33be one
44:33with me
44:33I cannot
44:34withhold
44:35the exercise
44:36of that
44:37power
44:37from him
44:41they
44:41who have
44:42learned to
44:43obey
44:43Christ's
44:44voice
44:44in life
44:45will
44:46quickly
44:46hear it
44:46and
44:47recognize
44:47its
44:47authority
44:48when they
44:49fall asleep
44:50in death
44:51they
44:52who have
44:52known its
44:53power to
44:53raise them
44:54out of
44:54spiritual
44:55death
44:55will no
44:56doubt
44:56its
44:57power
44:57to raise
44:58them
44:58from bodily
44:59death
45:00to a
45:00more abundant
45:00life
45:01than this
45:02world
45:02affords
45:03they
45:04once
45:04felt
45:04as if
45:05nothing
45:05could
45:05deliver
45:06them
45:06they
45:07were
45:07dead
45:07death
45:08to
45:08Christ's
45:09commands
45:09bound
45:10in
45:11bonds
45:11which
45:11they
45:12thought
45:12would
45:12hold
45:12them
45:13until
45:13they
45:13themselves
45:14should
45:15rot
45:15away
45:15from
45:16within
45:16them
45:16they
45:17were
45:18buried
45:18out
45:18of
45:18sight
45:19of
45:19all
45:19that
45:19could
45:19give
45:20spiritual
45:20life
45:21and
45:21the
45:22heavy
45:22stone
45:22of

45:25upon
45:26their
45:26ruined
45:26and
45:27outcast
45:27condition
45:31but
45:31Christ's
45:32love
45:32sought
45:33them
45:33out
45:33and
45:34called
45:34them
45:34into
45:35life
45:36assured
45:36that
45:37he
45:37has
45:37the
45:38power
45:38to
45:38do
45:38this
45:39conscious
45:40in

45:40that
45:41they
45:41are

45:55has
45:55already
