00:00Tyvus, I threw this out earlier.
00:02The Browns are tied for the fourth lowest point total right now in football.
00:09The three teams that have scored fewer points are a combined 1-16.
00:13Is that a beautiful thing or what?
00:17It's unbelievable.
00:18It just goes to tell you how good this defense is.
00:21And it's so funny because it's not far off of what we've been seeing
00:25for the last three seasons, maybe,
00:28where it's been the offense has struggled,
00:31but the defense is playing lights out.
00:32It's been the same recipe.
00:34Although it's a different coach, it's still the same recipe.
00:37And you're hoping that offensively,
00:40the difference is there is a new offensive system that's being put in.
00:46And I guess you could say the same thing about Kevin
00:48when you went to Dorsey and all of those things.
00:51I guess you could say that.
00:52But the reason that people aren't flipping out about it as much
00:56is because you're winning games.
00:57And it's coming through in the fourth quarter and games is exciting.
01:00But it is not a lasting recipe at all.
01:04You have to figure something out.
01:06Shooter to later.
01:07I was just listening to Todd Munkin in the locker room.
01:09He was even saying, like, we're 4-2 and we ain't even playing our best ball.
01:13Well, it's almost time because everybody's starting to figure out who they are.
01:17And the Browns still are chasing that identity.
01:20Still on that identity.
01:21Maybe that identity is the defense, right?
01:23And with Grant Delpit going out yesterday, give me your assessment of that Browns defense,
01:29especially the backfield, Mr. Defensive Back.
01:32Yeah, I thought that they played really well.
01:34Obviously, Miles Harden was going to have the tough excitement being on Zay Flowers.
01:38And, you know, in the first half, Zay Flowers really got over on him.
01:42But they really did some good adjustments.
01:43You know, you end up getting a pass rush to help you out.
01:46And I thought Emmanuel McNeil Warren looked like he belonged.
01:50He looked like a guy that in a couple of years, we might be talking about an all-pro type
01:53safety.
01:54That dude just, the ball finds him.
01:57Like, it's something that you can't teach.
01:59You know, it's instincts.
02:01His instincts to get to the ball is why I thought he would go in the first round.
02:05That was the thing.
02:06When you even go back and watch his college tape, he did a wonderful job getting takeaways,
02:10whether that was interceptions or forcing fumbles.
02:12And I just thought, obviously, he dropped the pick.
02:15But he was right there, read it.
02:16And it was, like, naturally instinctive that he was supposed to be right there to know to go pick that
02:22play.
02:22Then I thought his biggest play was he ended up shooting the gap
02:25and shooting Derrick Henry's leg from up under him to get a nice little tackle.
02:29So, he tells you he ain't turning down no smokes.
02:33He has the perfect mold to want safety to be.
02:37Obviously, you want Grant Delpit to be, because I think Dale Pitt,
02:40where he specializes above shoulder.
02:43He got a good knowledge of the game.
02:45But, and they can run that three safety look, but he don't need the rush
02:49because Emmanuel McNeil Warren is doing a good job of holding it down right now.
02:52Tyvus, your comment about identity lacking on offense, I think, is a really good one.
02:59What can lead to them finding their identity on offense?
03:03What has to happen for that to kick into place?
03:08I think it starts with Deshaun, obviously.
03:10You know, he's got to do a better job of getting the ball out.
03:13You know, this holding the ball for four to five seconds thing,
03:16like, that's just not going to work.
03:17You know, that's, you have to be an extremely special arm talent
03:22to be able to pull that off play by play.
03:24You think of Caleb Williams, you think of Patrick Mahomes.
03:27Like, they can do that.
03:27Josh Allen, those guys can do that because their arm talent is ridiculous.
03:33Deshaun Watson's arm is good.
03:35It's not great like it used to be anymore.
03:37So he doesn't, and his deep ball, it needs a little bit of work.
03:41It's not what it used to be what it once was either.
03:44So that's why he's got to be better at getting the ball out.
03:47And, again, I think that just starts with his initial read.
03:50He's got to have his eyes in the right place
03:51and be able to go through his progressions really quick
03:54to know where to go with the ball.
03:55Again, I pointed out on the post games, you go back and watch some of his tape.
04:01Like, even when they run quick game, his eyes might be to the right,
04:04but the open guy is to the left.
04:05So I don't know what goes into, what dictates what side a quarterback
04:09is supposed to look to first, but he's been in the wrong,
04:12his eyes have been in the wrong spot multiple times.
04:16Hey, Typhus, I'm curious your thought of the weird schedule that's coming up here.
04:20Three games on the road, and then for the next five weeks,
04:24because they have a bye week, they are at home for all of those.
04:27So you've got a month's worth of games in five weeks.
04:30Just kind of bizarre.
04:32It doesn't – I can't remember an NFL schedule,
04:34especially for this team, looking like that.
04:37What, five games in a row at home?
04:40No, that never happens.
04:40I mean, it's three on the road and then five weeks at home.
04:44Four games, five weeks because you've got the bye.
04:46Yeah, usually that never happens.
04:49But you know what the good news is?
04:50The Browns are 3-0 at home.
04:51So you find a way to win – you win the next two out of the three
04:55and come home and win four at home, you're looking pretty good.
04:59So that's right there is ten wins, and that's usually the mark for each season.
05:04So actually, their schedule is pretty set up for them to do it,
05:09which going into the season, it was a lot of people that pointed out
05:11the Browns had the easiest schedule, and what they're doing is taking advantage
05:15of that easy schedule with some of those home games and stuff like that.
05:19So you've got to make the layups.
05:21You already missed one layup with the Jets game.
05:23You go up against Tennessee, you've got to make the layups.
05:26And it's crazy because it seems like some of the teams you thought would be easy
05:29are starting to figure it out.
05:30The Saints won last week.
05:32Houston looks like they're figuring it out.
05:34So you're really, really going to have to find that identity offensively soon,
05:39especially when you go up against Houston,
05:40because it seems like that defense is starting to look more and more
05:43like it did last year.
05:45Tennessee got a win yesterday, too, first of the season.
05:47And the Browns, of course, in Tennessee coming up on Sunday.
05:50You'll hear Tyvus Powell on the Browns Radio Network,
05:52pregame with Andy, postgame with me.
05:56The way that this defense has played, Tyvus, without Mason Graham,
06:01without Mike Hall, Grant Delpit out yesterday,
06:04it seems that Mike Rutenberg not only has been able to adjust to guys being out,
06:10but a just-in game.
06:12What does that do for a team?
06:15How does that happen during a game?
06:17You've been in defensive huddles, defensive meetings like crazy in your career.
06:21How do you do that?
06:24Well, it starts in practice, obviously.
06:26You know, a lot of these guys that's missing were guys that was also missing
06:30during training camp this year.
06:31So it got a lot of guys' reps, and you got to go with the ones.
06:34And I think it's very exciting that when you see certain guys doing the game,
06:39it's not their first time working with the first-team defense.
06:42Like, they've done it before in camp.
06:44So I think that that was very valuable, how they did their preseason.
06:48Now, obviously, it's not ideal because you want your starters to take a lot of reps
06:52so you can get that chemistry, especially when you're dealing with a new defensive coordinator.
06:55But for the Browns' philosophy or the way things are going this season with injury,
07:00it actually worked out and played a huge part.
07:02Or Aiden Huntington, we've seen Malik Collins, and we've seen Mike Hall
07:07and even Mason Graham miss time during training camp.
07:10So other guys got those reps, which means that they're able to go in there.
07:13We knew Emmanuel McNeil-Warren was a special talent.
07:16He even got some burn with the ones during preseason in some games
07:19when they ran the three safety looks.
07:21So when these guys are getting tapped under the shoulder to go in, it's not different.
07:25It's not foreign.
07:26Like, they've had the reps with these guys already in there and worked the chemistry out.
07:31And I love the fact that it's just so much confidence in the guys that's going on the field.
07:36You know, it seems like that defense never wavers.
07:38It's like they're excited for their guy to go out there and make a play
07:41because they know what he's about.
07:43They know what he brings to the table.
07:45And give credit to those players that's going into games.
07:49They're accepting that challenge with flying colors every time.
07:52All right, Tyves, I'd be remiss if I didn't get one Ohio State question in.
07:55I knew obviously a big win against Indiana,
07:57but the quarterback situation is going to be rough for the next couple weeks
08:01because we know that Julian Sainz is going to be out.
08:03Luke Fahey did not look good, even though Ryan Day said,
08:06well, we just got to get him into the flow of the game.
08:08And what's going on with Tavian Sinclair?
08:13Obviously, losing Julian is terrible.
08:16Obviously, a lot like the talk of the town right now is the season cooked.
08:19But I think that for Luke Fahey, he's won the backup job.
08:23You know, you've seen Tavian Sinclair in the spring game.
08:26You know, he had some up-and-down moments.
08:28You know, you want him to grasp it.
08:30He's got all the talent in the world.
08:32I think physically gifted, he's probably better than any quarterback in that room.
08:36And that's Julian Sainz included.
08:38When it comes to just natural, physically gifted traits,
08:42he has all of those things.
08:43But we know that the game of quarterback is also played above shoulders.
08:47A lot of it is above shoulders.
08:48And I just think that he's got to do a better job of grasping the college game.
08:53You know, you can't just continue to lean on your athleticism.
08:56I think when you look at Ohio State and the way that they train quarterbacks
08:59and teach quarterbacks, it's an advanced level.
09:03And, you know, if you're starting all the way from the bottom, from the basement,
09:07and really didn't have a good foundation in high school, you're behind the eight ball.
09:12So I think he's playing catch-up a lot when it comes to the college game.
09:16I mean, you listen to quarterbacks like Will Howard that was here talk about this is a guy
09:21who started four years at Kansas State and said that even when he came to Ohio State,
09:25the way they trained, they coached quarterbacks with their bands,
09:29and he didn't even look at the game that way.
09:31So you think of a guy that did that and then saying that, obviously for a kid who didn't really
09:36play
09:36big-time high school ball, it's going to be behind the eight ball.
09:39And I just think with Luke Fahey, I think he just does a better job of playing on time.
09:43You know, I think that that's heavily emphasized.
09:45We talk about it in the NFL a lot.
09:48Guys play on time.
09:49Get the ball out your hands.
09:50Anytime you see Luke Fahey come in the game, you know, whether that be garbage time
09:54or anything like that, he's always done a great job of playing on time.
09:57And I think that's just something that they value.
09:59Yeah, obviously he looked bad in this game against Indiana,
10:02but he didn't think he was playing in that game.
10:05You know, how many reps do you actually get with the ones, right?
10:09So I think you give him two weeks to figure it out.
10:11I'm not saying he's going to go out there and just be the best thing to slice bread,
10:15but I think he's going to look much better than he did at Batavia.
10:20If I was in my expedited, I'd try to be in that coach's office as much as possible,
10:25try to learn the game plan, try to really figure it out,
10:27because he obviously can be an unbelievable quarterback here.
10:32But if you don't understand the game and can't get things down
10:35and do the day-to-day things, it's going to be hard for a coach to trust you
10:39and put you out there.
10:40All right, you talked about time.
10:41You've got a freshman that's going to step out on the field,
10:43and the time was just announced.
10:45The good thing for Ohio State is they've got, you know, the bye this week.
10:48And, you know, we talked about that yesterday for a couple seconds.
10:51But, you know, they got the bye this week,
10:53and now you've got USC primetime Halloween.
10:57NBC just picked up the game.
10:58Your thoughts on that?
11:02Like a night game.
11:03I would love to get one in the shoe for sure,
11:05but I guess we just can't get that no more.
11:07But, yeah, no, of course it's going to be a tougher game.
11:10Obviously a night game at USC.
11:12I don't know how their fans are going to be.
11:13The good news is this, the Buckeyes travel unbelievably.
11:16So he'll be – if they go out there and handle business, you know,
11:19it'll feel like a home game.
11:21I will say that offensively they're going to have to come with it
11:24because we know USC's offense is always really good.
11:27Defensively they're not,
11:28so they're going to have to take advantage of a weak defense.
11:31And you've got to do a great job of putting up some points.
11:33That's true.
11:33And on top of that, you've got the best player in college football to throw it to.
11:37When in doubt, throw it to four.
11:41I thought they had a pretty good defense against me the other day,
11:43double team, triple team.
11:44I was like – that first half you were wondering how they were going to get him
11:48in the game, you know.
11:50They did exactly what you should do.
11:52Make somebody other than number four beat you
11:54because there has not been another guy on Ohio State's offense
11:57that just went off and had this unbelievable game.
12:00So I think that Indiana had the right game plan.
12:03It's really a blueprint.
12:04If I was going up against Ohio State, I would use that same blueprint.
12:07I would too.
12:08I would put two people on him just like they did,
12:11and you've got to beat me with somebody else.
12:13And we'll wait to see if somebody else step up and answer that challenge.
12:17Tyvus Powell joining us from the Browns Radio Network.
12:20I want to go back to the Browns for a second here.
12:22Have you been on a team that expectations weren't real high
12:27and you had a really good start like this?
12:30And if so, what does a good start do for a team
12:35that might have had a lot of question marks going into the season?
12:38I haven't been on a team that had a good start
12:42where the expectation wasn't like that, wasn't high.
12:45Because the only team that was really good that I was on was Seattle at the time
12:49and they was trying to get back to the Super Bowl.
12:52So I think for the Browns, if I was in that locker room,
12:55one, I would embrace the fact that I'm 4-2.
12:57You know, that's great.
12:58But I think they're not naive to the fact that they're not playing their best ball.
13:03Defensively, yeah, they are.
13:04They're playing at a high level.
13:05But offensively, I think they understand that they're not playing at an elite level
13:10and they're probably eager to try to turn it on
13:13because, you know, you're hitting almost the halfway mark of this season
13:18and you're in a good spot where the playoffs is actually realistic.
13:21You know, you're in a spot where nobody thought you could be.
13:23I don't want them to fall complacent and think, oh, we just that good.
13:27Like, that's not the case.
13:28I think you got some lucky bounces.
13:30The defense has bailed you out a lot.
13:31But offensively, it's time for them to carry their weight.
13:34I think that the defense has pretty much helped them a long way.
13:37And it's good to play complementary football.
13:39But at some point, as an offensive guy, wouldn't you feel kind of guilty?
13:43Like, man, they're doing all this and we ain't producing.
13:46Like, we got to hold up our end of the bargain as well.
13:49So, hopefully that's the conversation in their locker room.
13:52Hopefully they can get a response next week against Tennessee.
13:54That would be a good game to start.
13:56Tyvus, thanks, buddy.
13:57We'll talk to you on Sunday.
13:58Thanks, Tyvus.
14:01Go Browns, go Bucs, go Gars, free Class A.
14:06There you go.
14:07Tyvus Powell.
