Tyvis Powell breaks down Browns QB Deshaun Watson's impact; future for Shedeur Sanders, Taylen Green
Transcript
00:00He's Mr. Tyvus Powell.
00:01And the folks in Bedford.
00:02Big Ten Tailgate, Browns Radio Network, Bedford Bearcat.
00:07Hello, Tyvus.
00:09How you gentlemen doing?
00:10I haven't seen y'all in like two weeks.
00:13Oh, you're ruining the optical illusion, people.
00:16It's been crushing.
00:17You just ruined the show, man.
00:19You ruined it.
00:19Everybody thought you were sitting next to us on Sunday.
00:24How could they when you just said, on the cow right, we make it right,
00:28called cow right.
00:30Yeah, but on game day, on Thursday night, come on, man.
00:33People thought we were sitting next to each other.
00:35They didn't know you were sitting in a room in Columbus doing the show with us.
00:39I know.
00:39It did great.
00:40Theater of the mind, man.
00:41Theater of the mind.
00:44Tyvus, I've been saying this quietly today.
00:46I don't want anybody to know.
00:49Browns are three and one.
00:52Oh, yeah.
00:53With a chance to go four and one.
00:55Now, we can't get above ourselves because, you know, this league is week to week.
01:02So, you know, the Jets, we thought that it was going to be a dub last year,
01:06and they had a different plan for us.
01:08So, we got to handle business to get to four and one.
01:11Could you imagine four and one, what it looked like, playoff implications?
01:15You look around at AFC North, it's just you and Baltimore at the top.
01:20Man.
01:21Ooh.
01:22Never thought I'd see this.
01:24At this point, don't you kind of have to think of things that way?
01:28I mean, you're allowed to think playoffs right now.
01:32You're playing okay.
01:33You keep going.
01:35You're in the hunt, right?
01:36Yes.
01:37Don't know.
01:38I mean, we can think that way.
01:39The players are week to week.
01:41They can only be thinking about the Jets.
01:44If they think playoffs now, then, you know, you can ruin it.
01:47You can't look too far ahead.
01:50I'm just looking at that four and one, Mark.
01:532020 was the last time we did it before that.
01:5694.
01:58Thanks.
02:00All right.
02:02I'm ready.
02:03I was born in 94.
02:05I know.
02:06That's why I didn't.
02:06I wasn't sure.
02:08There you go.
02:09So, it's only happened once in your lifetime.
02:12That's correct.
02:12For the most part.
02:13Well, twice.
02:14Which depends when you're birthday.
02:15I was born in early 94.
02:16When's your birthday?
02:17Yeah.
02:18February.
02:19Yeah, I know.
02:20This will be the third time in your lifetime.
02:23You are almost – it happened in October, so.
02:26But let's discuss this a little more.
02:27Yeah, that's usually when they play football.
02:28Yeah.
02:29Okay, thanks, Jeff.
02:31Look what I have to put up.
02:32Does he do this to you post-game?
02:34I don't think so.
02:34No, heavens, no.
02:36Tyvus is on the ball.
02:38Tyvus, what are you doing with quarterback?
02:39If Gabriel comes off the IR, which I don't think they're going to bring him off the IR,
02:43but if they did, then what are you doing?
02:45You dressing four?
02:46You going Steelers?
02:47Or are you going to keep four on the active?
02:49You're not dressing four.
02:50Are you keeping four active?
02:51No.
02:52No, I think that you got – I think there's a decision you have to make where I think
02:57it's obviously one of them being Trey Shadour.
03:00The other one is release Taylor Green and try to bring him back on practice squad.
03:04To me, I think that would be the most likely because, you know, everybody's like,
03:08well, somebody will take him.
03:09Somebody will grab him.
03:10Hold on now.
03:11This man was a six-round pick, so they had ample opportunity to take him.
03:15Nobody did.
03:16He had played one game in the preseason where he ran the ball a lot of that time,
03:22so nobody really signed enough for that.
03:24He doesn't have any preparation of preparing as a starter,
03:29so you would have to teach him that.
03:31So I don't think that, you know – I know a lot of people think that when people
03:36come here in the preseason and ball out for the Browns, it's impossible that if you
03:40cut him that you won't get him back.
03:42I don't think that's the scenario.
03:44I think he could definitely clear waivers and then sign him back as a practice
03:48squad player because I just think if somebody was to claim him, he got a lot to
03:53you got to work on for him to even be ready as a starter.
03:56So I wouldn't think that that would be the case.
03:59I think that would be the likely scenario that they would do, but if they wanted
04:03to trade Shador, I think it would be good for Shador, but it would be terrible
04:07for the city because I think he just does so much stuff outside of just doing
04:11football.
04:12He's made such an impact in Cleveland that a lot of fans would be sad and upset
04:16about that, but obviously it would give him an opportunity to be a starter and do
04:20all of those things, so it would be good for his career.
04:22But I think the Taylor Greene thing would be the most likely scenario if he was
04:28going to do that.
04:29Ty Viz Powell joining us from the Browns Radio Network.
04:32What's been the most impressive part of the defense in the last three games?
04:37Just the different contributions they're getting on the defensive line.
04:41You know, when you see Mason Graham go down, it was kind of like, ooh, you know,
04:45he's the leader of the sacks.
04:46He's been on a tear this season.
04:49And what do they do?
04:50They go out there and get five sacks.
04:52So it's just been, I don't know, man.
04:55It always takes me back to, remember when Jadavion Clowning was here, right?
05:01And things ended very sour with Jadavion.
05:05And on his way out, he made some comments.
05:08And at the time, I just didn't understand what he was saying.
05:11He said something along the lines of, this defense is all they're doing is trying to
05:16get Miles to the Hall of Fame.
05:18And I didn't understand that.
05:21And now I'm starting to sit back and think, like, was every game plan, and rightfully so,
05:27but like, was every game plan, like, tailored to Miles?
05:30Like, did y'all have people specifically do certain things so Miles could have a green
05:34light to do whatever he wants?
05:36Because, like, a guy like Mason Graham, they're not going to tell me that a guy that's getting
05:41sacks like that couldn't get a sack last year.
05:43He finished the season with zero sacks.
05:46But now all of a sudden, it's just there for him, you know?
05:48You're seeing all these guys start to contribute.
05:51Mike Hall, all these guys getting these sacks.
05:54And I don't think that it just started, like, you know, like they couldn't have been doing
05:59this, so it made me wonder, like, what was the game plan?
06:02And what did Jadavion Clowney mean when he said that?
06:06Because it's starting to make a little bit more sense to me.
06:09Maybe these guys are more talented than we've been giving them credit for because we've
06:12just been so enamored with Miles Garrett.
06:16Tell me if this is something, because I'm curious.
06:19They have four out of their next five games on the road.
06:23Like, how dumb was the league to do that, especially knowing that we would have pretty
06:27good weather around now?
06:29Like, you know, it's just, it's weird that you have four of your next five on the road.
06:34I know we don't want to look too far ahead.
06:36We want to be like, oh, what do they look here?
06:37But, I mean, you're at the Jets, and then you come home for the Ravens, and we keep saying
06:41that's probably, it's a one o'clock game now.
06:43But, you know, if the Browns win, and depending on, I guess, what happens with the quarterback
06:47situation in Baltimore with the injury, you know, that game probably gets flexed to a
06:53four o'clock game, I would think.
06:56Fox would probably want to move it to an afternoon game.
06:58But, so now you're looking at, you know, you're on the road, you're at home, you're
07:01on the road against the Titans, you're on the road against the Steelers, you're on the
07:04road against the Saints.
07:05It's just, I think it's a weird quirk in the schedule, if you ask me.
07:09Yeah, I mean, I don't look at it that way.
07:13You know, obviously, we enjoy more home games and things like that, but I don't have a problem
07:17with road games as a former player, because it just, it allows you to lock in and be really
07:23tight in it with your, with the guys that you came there with.
07:26And, you know, you never know what happens in the playoffs.
07:28If you don't win home field advantage, you know, you're going to be playing on the road,
07:31so you might as well get used to, you know, thriving in that environment.
07:34Um, so I don't have an issue with it.
07:37I don't think they have an issue with it.
07:39Is it, is it that we get four out of five and then we get a bunch of home games?
07:43Yeah, we have four in a row at home after that.
07:45Four in a row at home.
07:46Give me all the, give me the, uh, all the four away games.
07:50You'll take them.
07:52You know what I'm saying?
07:53What is the Jets?
07:54Oh, it's Jets and then Ravens at home and then at Titans, at Steelers, at Saints.
08:01I like that.
08:02That's not bad at all.
08:03I get that, that's, if you can go to 500 in those four games and in those four road games,
08:10that's a win.
08:11I think, and I think they definitely can do that.
08:13They might be able to do a little bit better than that, actually.
08:16And Steelers is a bus ride too.
08:18Tyrus Powell joining us.
08:20Not bad at all.
08:21All right.
08:22What's Deshaun Watson look like to you?
08:25Does he look anything like what he used to look like?
08:27Does he look serviceable?
08:29Does he look like a guy who's playing great football?
08:32What's he, what's he look like?
08:34I think Deshaun Watson in the first half of this, at this Pittsburgh game, he looked almost
08:40like prime Deshaun Watson.
08:41I mean, at halftime, I was like, oh yeah, this dude, he finally is clicking for him again.
08:46He's got all his confidence back.
08:48He's loving game again and all of those things.
08:50And then obviously the second half left a lot to be desired.
08:54They're obviously missing the big throw to Harold Fannin on that third down.
08:57That probably would have iced the game.
08:59You obviously want him to get that done.
09:00But every time he out there, he gets better and better and better and better.
09:05And that's, that's what you kind of want.
09:07You know, that's what you want out of your quarterback and stuff like that.
09:09And like I say, the one thing that I can always say is that this team is definitely riding
09:13with him.
09:14You know, these guys go and he's motivating and inspiring to these guys and they enjoy
09:19being out there with them.
09:20That's the case.
09:21Keep riding with it.
09:22You know, let's see how far this thing can go because he's starting to look really good.
09:25He's starting to put it all together.
09:26Just need it more consistent.
09:27I think if anything, if you want anything out of him more, it's the fact that you want
09:31him to be consistent and obviously, you know, take care of the football.
09:34You can't be fumbling it two times and then throwing picks and stuff like that.
09:38Although the pick was tipped and all of those things, but yeah, just taking care of the football.
09:41I thought he did a better job against the Carolina finishing the game with no picks this time.
09:47Obviously he had two fumbles.
09:49I know one he got back and then we lost one and then the interception.
09:53So if the defense is going to play well, you know, don't make it even harder on them.
09:57You know, make sure that you're doing a great job of at least protecting the football.
10:02Jerry, Judy setting.
10:03I don't know if you caught that.
10:05See that?
10:06How about that, right?
10:07How about that?
10:08How about it?
10:08For the game too, in the fourth quarter when you had to have it.
10:12You know, Jerry, Judy is just, I know it was, it was funny watching him catch the ball,
10:15his first catch and then seeing how he was acting.
10:18You know, it, I think this has been very humbling to him.
10:21You know, I think that this experience of, you know, having some success and then not
10:25having a lot of success and then having a pretty rough training camp.
10:29Cause it was a lot of drops in training camp.
10:31You know, it makes you question your confidence a little bit, but I think having,
10:34seeing him have that success on Thursday against Pittsburgh like that is something
10:39that he could build off of cause they're going to need them.
10:41I know a lot of people are done with the Jerry, Judy experiment and rightfully so.
10:45I get that, but he is a veteran.
10:47He is a guy that can still will one-on-one battles and that's what you're going to need.
10:51So hopefully, you know, this Thursday game was inspired for him to continue to keep pushing.
10:56I know how frustrating it is getting phased out of the game plan and things like that,
10:59but there's going to be more opportunities when you're out there, when you're one-on-one.
11:04If they put their third best corner on you, you, that, that should be lunch.
11:07You should be like, Oh yeah, bet.
11:08You should be able to win those and become an X factor for this team.
11:12As a guy who used to defend wide receivers, Denzel Boston through four games,
11:18Casey Concepcion through four games.
11:21Denzel Boston is very, uh, he's been really good with the yards after the catch.
11:26Very strong, very physical.
11:28That's part of his game.
11:29I knew he was a big body guy, but I didn't necessarily know that his yards after the catch
11:34would be as good as it's been.
11:35Um, I think that that's a big factor that's helping this team out a lot.
11:39Um, Casey Concepcion is still, I think he's still finding his footing.
11:43You know, it's been, if you go back and watch the all 22, you know, there's a lot of plays
11:46that he's open and he's still winning his one-on-one.
11:49So he's got to do a better job of finding him and getting the ball.
11:51But both of those young guys definitely have increased the wide receiver.
11:55I mean, they phased out the number one guy who we had.
11:58So, um, unless you know that those young guys got some good coaching going on over there
12:02and they're really figuring things out.
12:03And it's going to be interesting to see what the final product at the end of this year
12:06looks like for them.
12:07So, um, unsung heroes, we haven't really talked about special teams all year, but when you
12:12go back and look at kickoff returns, look who has more yards than anybody else.
12:16It's the Cleveland Browns, 621 yards on kickoff returns.
12:20How is having rock solid special, especially punting?
12:22How much has that changed the, you know, this whole year and helped them become three
12:28and one?
12:29Well, the punting, we always had the punting.
12:31The punting has been really good, um, for the past couple of years.
12:34I mean, Corey had to deal with some rough offenses and he had to do a great job of flipping
12:38the field and he's always done a tremendous job at that.
12:41That's why he was been my MVP for all these seasons.
12:43That is true.
12:44He'd be flipping that field.
12:45So, uh, that's been there.
12:47It is good now to have a kicker that you can trust though.
12:50You know, when Andre Smith, I think he's earned that right to where if he goes out there and
12:54kick it, there shouldn't be a lot of, there shouldn't be nerves.
12:57You know, obviously it's still going to be something naturally, but you should be feel kind
13:02of confident.
13:02This is about, we getting back to where Phil Dawson was, you know, where it was like,
13:06all right, he going, Andre going out there and kicking his money.
13:09You know, I ain't even got to look.
13:10I know it's good.
13:11Like that's the territory that he's getting in.
13:13And that's such a great feeling.
13:14I mean, you think about, you know, Cincinnati's run to the Superbowl a few years ago, you know,
13:19how many game winners did, uh, Evan McPherson had to kick.
13:22So you're going to need that in playoffs and stuff like that.
13:24Even when we made the playoffs, think about how many, uh, field goals Dustin Hopkins had
13:28to hit for us to win those games and stuff like that.
13:30So it's a big weapon to have.
13:33Um, and then as the return game goes, that is something that's been non-existent since
13:36what, Travis Benjamin.
13:38So it's nice to, you know, at least have some excitement there with Rocky Sanders on kickoff
13:43and, and those guys doing their thing there.
13:46So yeah, it's good.
13:47It's one of those things that you're going to need when you, when, when you go up against
13:51a really good team, it's going to take all hands on deck.
13:54You know, you got to be able to play good defense and be able to run the ball to make
13:57some plays on offense, but that special teams is that hidden yardage that people don't talk
14:00about that can absolutely change the outcome of a game.
14:03Tyvus Powell joining us.
14:05Brown's radio network, big 10 tailgate at Northwestern coming up, uh, this weekend.
14:10Enjoy the new stadium.
14:11Enjoy that trip.
14:12Yeah.
14:13I am going to enjoy that new stadium.
14:16With that in mind, we have young guys playing on the offensive line here.
14:19Spencer Fano, left tackle, Austin Barber, right guard for the first time in his life.
14:25I think it's a pretty good deal when those two guys are out there and you don't hear
14:29their names called very much during the game.
14:31Tyvus, does that, is that the case?
14:33Does that seem to be the case?
14:35That is definitely the case.
14:37Um, you know, I think it, well, Spencer Fano, obviously the first, our first round pick.
14:42Um, so I, he was supposed to hit, you get to, you get the opportunity to pick the left
14:47tackle, you know, the first tackle off the board.
14:50You got to make sure you hit on that.
14:51And I think that they hit a home run on that.
14:53You know, a lot of people were skeptical because of the Jedrick wheels and all of those things.
14:57And they just offensive lines.
14:58It hasn't been a strong suit lately as of picks.
15:01But I think that these last couple of drafts, it just goes right back to AB doing a great
15:05job of identifying talent and getting them in here and getting them developed.
15:09I think that's still, to me, was one of the biggest things that we were missing in
15:13this organization was that I just didn't think we developed young players at the rate
15:17that we needed to, to be successful.
15:19But it seems like that's changed over these last couple of years.
15:22They found a way to get to these guys and put these guys in position to succeed, you
15:26know, use these guys to what their strength is and create X factors and stuff like that.
15:31I think you might with Austin Barber, you might've made a mistake and messed around and found
15:35your, your guard, your right guard of the future.
15:37And he's on a rookie deal.
15:38So after getting off of the contracts of paying two of the highest paid guards with
15:43Petonio and Wyatt Teller, you then messed around and found two premium or a premium
15:48guy that you ain't even got to pay all that money to right now.
15:52So it just allows you to spend in different spots.
15:55Yeah.
15:56I love, I like what I'm seeing on the offensive line.
15:58Hey, they've been, I thought it started off rough, but they starting to really find some
16:02continuity and you can see that chemistry and they starting to create these scenes for
16:06running backs.
16:07I think they're doing a pretty good job of keeping Deshaun Watson's jersey clean when he
16:11plays in the pocket.
16:12When he goes outside the pocket, he's, that's on him.
16:14You know, I can't blame those guys for, you know, allowing guys to get to him there, but
16:20I like what I see out of this, this offensive line.
16:23Tyvus Powell.
16:24Kind, sir.
16:25We'll see you coming up on Sunday.
16:27Thanks Tyvus.
16:28I'll see y'all later.
16:29Go Browns.
16:30Go guards.
16:31Isn't that the truth?
16:33Thanks buddy.
16:35Tyvus Powell joining us.
