High drama unfolded in the national capital as Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, alongside several INDIA bloc leaders and Members of Parliament, were detained by the Delhi Police during a flash protest near Jantar Mantar. The agitation followed an opposition strategy lunch meeting and focused on escalating demands to meet Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Priyanka Gandhi resisted detention, holding up a copy of the Indian Constitution from inside a police bus, while Rahul Gandhi actively blocked his entry into a transport vehicle before being escorted away. Delhi Police cited restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and stated that demonstrations at Jantar Mantar mandate ten days of prior permission. Opposition leaders argued that peaceful protest remains their democratic right. Several buses transporting detained parliamentarians and party workers moved towards police holding camps along Janpath, concluding the demonstration.

00:00That's Rahul Gandhi there. When the Delhi police was with him, the Delhi cops constantly asking him, what will it
00:06take for you to end this particular detention?
00:08I just want to highlight for you the images now of Priyanka Gandhi being detained on that bus.
00:13She's holding the constitution booklet on display there as she is in fact being taken away in that bus, detained
00:21by the Delhi police.
00:22Strong messaging by Priyanka Gandhi. The Congress has repeatedly done this, holding up the red booklet of the Indian constitution.
00:31Remember that the Congress leaders have been questioning why they're not being allowed to protest, why they're not being allowed
00:37to meet with the CEC, Gyanesh Kumar.
00:40And that is the messaging there by Priyanka Gandhi saying it's well within my democratic right to protest.
00:45It's well within my democratic right to demand a meeting with the CEC.
00:49That is the messaging there. As she's taken away in that bus, you can see she's fighting it out, trying
00:55to get out of the bus constantly.
00:56There are cops holding her, pushing her in. She is sending across a message to the media personnel all outside,
01:03holding up that constitution booklet.
01:06Speaking earlier to the media, she also questioned the manner in which the Delhi police has really handled this entire
01:12agitation.
01:13They were there in huge numbers, fully prepared for this moment, took all of these leaders into custody.
01:18But she says she was thrown to the ground, she was scratched.
01:21And even now, as she's being pushed inside, you can see her resisting all of those attempts, holding up the
01:27constitution booklet.
01:29As dramatic as it gets, this is messaging by the opposition right now on the issue of Gyanesh Kumar,
01:36that they will not stop till Gyanesh Kumar steps down.
01:39Or in this case, their specific demand is that they want a meeting with the CEC.
01:44If yesterday it played out just a stone's throw away from the EC office, today it played out just a
01:49stone's throw away from Jantar Mantar,
01:51where the Delhi police put on record their statement that it takes prior permission 10 days before a protest for
02:00any agitation to be allowed in Jantar Mantar.
02:02Which is why, in this case, this flash protest, which started off as a luncheon meeting, has now become this
02:10dramatic moment outside the Jantar Mantar.
02:12Let's cut across to more reports.
02:13Let's cut across the Jantar Mantar.
03:10Let's cut across the Jantar Mantar.
03:13Here's a very-her sense of the situation on ground.
03:15It's quite a humid day in Delhi.
03:17And through the day, the Congress leaders, the opposition leaders have been out there staging a protest.
03:22They've all been detained.
03:23We understand they're all being taken to one particular spot now.
03:27But like I said, it started off hours ago with a lunch meeting, meant to be a message of show
03:32of unity by the opposition.
03:33you had several members of the India bloc coming together in that particular huddle
03:37and from there dramatically turned into a flash protest
03:41where all of the leaders decided we want to protest the Jantar Mantar.
03:45Not allowed, their buses were stopped, they got out of their buses, staged the sit-in dharna
03:49and that quickly turned into a lie-down dharna
03:52because Priyanka Gandhi in the heart of that particular protest
03:55decided to lie down flat on the ground
03:58to send across a message to the Delhi police that she isn't being allowed to protest.
04:02This is a democratic right, which is why you see her now hanging out of the bus just moments ago
04:07holding up a copy of the constitution to send out a message
04:11that I have every right to go ahead and protest in this country.
04:14Rahul Gandhi, on the other hand, was carried and shoved into the bus
04:17much like what we saw last night at the Akashwani Bhavan.
04:21Again, resisting detention, refused to cooperate with the police.
04:24He is carried from that spot and taken into the bus.
04:28So, several images on your screens there of the moment that we really saw this showdown peak.
04:34Whether it was a moment of Priyanka Gandhi being detained.
04:37She was lying on the ground of the women Delhi police personnel, as you can see there.
04:41Four, five of them picked her up, scooped her up from the ground
04:45and then took her in and detained her.
04:47Middle of your screens is the image that I have been referring to
04:50of Priyanka Gandhi holding up the constitution.
04:52And then Rahul Gandhi, who is detained in the same manner as he was yesterday,
04:57carried into the bus and using his leg to actually stop himself
05:00from being taken into that bus.
05:03Shriya, take us through what's happening right now.
05:05With the Gandhi siblings being detained,
05:08it looks like things are now calming down.
05:10Most of the congress workers have been taken into custody.
05:13This now seems to be routine.
05:15We saw it yesterday, we saw it today.
05:17There's a likelihood that tomorrow also we'll see a similar stir now.
05:26We're trying to get you a reaction from Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi
05:30as he's being taken away in that van by the Delhi police personnel.
05:42Keep an eye out for that reaction if he chooses to speak.
05:45I'll bring back Shriya Kundu on this broadcast for the latest.
05:49Shriya, over to you.
05:54Yes, absolutely, Akshita.
05:55So I can tell you one thing.
05:57Over the span of the last four or five hours,
06:01we've taken an entire round of basically Janpat, Jantar Mantar,
06:06and we are almost nearing the same spot where all of this begun.
06:10That is the Sagar Ratna restaurant.
06:12So yes, most of the congress protesters and leaders who have been detained,
06:18other party, India Bloc Party members also who've been detained,
06:21senior members of the parliaments who've been detained,
06:24they've been taken away to police camps.
06:26But one thing was very clear, Akshita,
06:28that today the police personnel seemed extremely prepared.
06:32They have said since day one of protests that 163 BNSS is and has been imposed in the national capital.
06:40So nobody will be allowed to protest.
06:43Now yesterday when we had seen that there was an announcement,
06:46or rather the Congress Party and the India Bloc parties were mulling for another protest
06:50that they would be holding on the 9th of October,
06:55a day before the CJP had announced their protest for October 10th.
06:58So we see today the situation took a complete 180 degree turn.
07:03What was supposed to be just a strategy meet,
07:06and perhaps we were also speculating that there might be a press conference,
07:10joint press conference like we had seen on September 30th.
07:14Today the scenes were completely different.
07:16They were very sure that they were going to hit the streets.
07:19It was going to be a flash protest.
07:21They will continue exactly with the same momentum that they had left off yesterday night.
07:26And they will not let it die down.
07:28Because their point is, enough is enough.
07:30If we are not allowed to raise our voices,
07:32we will continue to fight back.
07:34We will continue to fight detention, whatever comes our way.
07:38While yes, strategically speaking, they have moved forward.
07:40They have written to the president, asked for an appointment with her.
07:44But at the same time, they are not abandoning the streets.
07:47That is what's different about this protest.
07:49And I think that's a page they have taken from the CJP protests
07:54during the month of July.
07:56That the momentum of a protest cannot be dying away
07:59and that the protests have to be led by the leaders.
08:03And if that requires you to, in fact, throw a surprise
08:07and a googly towards the police or the government, so be it.
08:10But they will continue no matter what.
08:12And that's perhaps what we saw develop in the national capital today.
08:17Just a highlight what's happened in the last few minutes.
08:21Shriya, stay with us.
08:22I want you to take a look at the footage that's emerged now
08:25of the manner in which Rahul Gandhi was detained.
08:28Much like yesterday, refused to, you know, be taken away by the Delhi police.
08:32Students Brown said, nothing doing.
08:34I'm going to continue with my protest, as did Priyanka Gandhi.
08:37And so they were lifted off the ground by a handful of Delhi police personnel
08:42and taken it to that bus.
08:44You can see the manner in which Rahul Gandhi is resisting, boarding that bus.
08:47This is the sequence there, the full footage.
08:49Look at the sea of Delhi police personnel there.
08:52He's trying to block off all the other congress workers.
09:06As he resists the detention, you can see him using his legs to block off
09:11being taken into that bus.
09:13These are the Gandhi siblings leading from the front as far as the opposition fight
09:17and opposition attack on the election commission is concerned.
09:22And they're making it very clear that they're not going to stop here.
09:24The next few days, there are more such protests planned in the national capital
09:28as they are saying that we have every right to hit the streets.
09:33We have every right to hold these protests.
09:34The Delhi police says that that's not the case.
09:37There will be, in fact, permission that must be granted.
09:44And if permission is not granted for a protest,
09:47you simply cannot gather there for what is called now as a flash protest by the congress.
09:52So that's the Delhi police version.
09:53They say that if you want to protest in Jantar Mantar,
09:56you need permission 10 days prior.
09:58None of that was done.
09:59Instead, during the lunch meeting, it was decided that these MPs will gather at Jantar Mantar.
10:03And that cannot happen.
10:05So these are the images on your screen.
10:07You can see a sea of Delhi police personnel there.
10:09All of them working towards detaining Rahul Gandhi.
10:14As we speak, Rahul and Priyanka, both of them are being taken right now to, in fact,
10:19either police station or a setup that the Delhi police have identified.
10:23We're just not sure at this point as to where that is.
10:25Shreya, do we have any confirmation on that?
10:32We are at present, Akshita, following the very, we did see a cavalcade leave because there was an entire bus
10:43as well,
10:44remember, of members of parliament who have not been detained, right?
10:46So they had several of their personal security cars as well, cavalcades that were moving towards this road itself,
10:55Janpath Road.
10:56So we are just following them up right now towards the end.
11:00Where exactly, because as many as 10 buses have left from the Jantar Mantar entrance.
11:04So where exactly are each of the leaders being taken, that's still something we are trying to follow up on.
11:10But as far as I can tell you, the buses were all on this very road itself.
11:14And I can see up ahead, there is quite a bit of commotion and quite a bit of a blockade,
11:20a chicken neck of sorts that's formed.
11:22So there is a possibility that several of those buses might have gathered there.
11:27We are just following up on this very road to go and check where exactly is it that both the
11:33Gandhi siblings as well as the other leaders,
11:35along with the protesters, have been kept in detention.
11:38Yesterday, it was the Kingsway camp that Rahul was taken to from Akashmani Bhawan.
11:41Today, it might be that or it might be a different camp that is being taken to.
11:45But yes, we keep tracking that for you and bring you those details in a little while.
11:50Delhi police choose to keep Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi at two separate locations.
11:54expectations expect again more drama to play out because once again, Priyanka Gandhi, like last night,
12:00when she attempted to climb the gates and reach her brother, in all likelihood could resort to something similar once
12:06again.
12:06So as we get you all the latest updates, I can confirm for you that the Congress's protest has more
12:11or less ended now,
12:12with the Gandhi siblings being detained.
12:14Most of the senior leaders have also been taken into custody.
12:17And the Delhi police has pretty much cleared up the entire area.
12:21The Congress continuing to put out posts on social media, where they're in fact alleging that their bid to go
12:28ahead and protest has once again been stopped.
12:31They're also attempting a show of unity here.
12:34The opposition came together for a lunch meeting and then quickly moved on to this particular protest.
12:39And while you had several representatives of political parties,
12:41I will highlight that the Samajwadi party was missing in action.
12:45Why?
12:46Because they say that they weren't given a formal or a proper invite,
12:50which is why they decided to skip the lunch meet as well as the subsequent protest.
12:54And this a day after Akinesh Yadu was right there,
12:56alongside Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi yesterday in the national capital.
